View Full Version : Florida getting all bent out of shape when Michael and the guys were going to sing...
Ireneparalegal 10-27-2006, 10:44 PM at the nightclub made me wanna scream. That woman acts like Michael FIRST OF ALL, was going to get into the nightclub. He was under 18, they wouldn't let him in, as they showed later on. Secondly, she acted like he was going to be carousing with drinks in his hand or something. HE AND THE GUYS WERE ENTERING A CONTEST, nothing more. Damn! Her overdramatics in this situation (as well as other times) really annoyed me.
JuicyCoutureGirl 10-28-2006, 12:38 AM
My god this character got on my last nerves! Man, she was holding everybody back with her holier than thou wah-wah act. Makes me like Clair Huxtable better, the only time she held someone back was Cliff, and it was just a hoagie!
hcollinsmith72 10-28-2006, 12:43 AM you both are so right, he was entering a contest.. that was it... it wasnt like her going out partying at the club..
JuicyCoutureGirl 10-28-2006, 01:03 AM Yes, it was just a contest, it wasn't like he was going to a 2 Live crew concert or something...
felicitylen 10-28-2006, 01:59 AM I just saw the episode the other night. I was like damn. Yeah, it wasn't that serious because he wasn't going to get in anyways.

I love my Flo.
Ireneparalegal 10-28-2006, 11:25 AM I love my Flo.
I know you do sweetie. I love her too. The dramatics, well, at times they were unnecessary or were used to hinder things at times.
GARFIELDKOOL 10-28-2006, 04:36 PM I know, it's not like Michael was going to go down there to drink. You know, after watching Good Times over and over for years, and paying attention to lots of scenes and characters, I have to say this: Florida is very annoying..... I love the character, but she annoys the hell out of me. I have come to that conclusion. She is VERY old fashion, and you know what, shoot me for saying this, I see why James was frustrated half of the time. Florida wouldn't let him or the kids do ANYTHING! His character was taken off for a reason. If it wasn't for Florida, the Evans would have been at least $7,000 richer. ($5,000 for a commercial, and $2,000 that James found and should have kept.)
Florida was bossy, selfish, and old fashion. She was the primary reason why they were poor.
hcollinsmith72 10-28-2006, 08:20 PM whoo that was a low blow lol

  Ouch! Old fashion yes, selfish..not quite. Like I said in another post, God didn't intend her broke ass to stay broke since she always used God as an excuse. God loves her but good god....
Ireneparalegal 10-28-2006, 09:11 PM OMG, Kool....BRAVO!!!! ThinkPink, YOU MAKE ME :brent
I agree with both of you. I just don't agree with the selfish part.
And it's so friggin hilarious that you said what you said Kool abt James and his being annoyed and frustrated and mad. I was thinking of James the other day. I was like, "Damn, I know why James was getting upset, had symptoms of high blood pressure and so forth, because whenever something financially positive occurred, the rug was pulled out from under him." I went on and on thinking that the family didn't like James being so mad, yet, they didn't help matters any with their attitude towards him and/or his actions. Screw that drink and DO THAT DAMN COMMERCIAL!!!!! Like NOT DOING THE COMMERCIAL, would suddently stop alcohol abuse among kids in the ghetto. Gimme a break lady.

I felt really terrible for James, poor man, he should have ran off with some other woman and take those kids with you! Every episode, Flordia was on her soapbox, like her opinion will change the world or something... like Michael rooming with a white girl(it's not like the boy has jungle fever), Thelma marrying Ebay(?)(Thelma wasn't a kid anymore, let her make her own decision), and forcing J.J to tell his rich date(Dee from Moesha) that he lost his job(let the man handle it!)
GARFIELDKOOL 10-28-2006, 09:38 PM I just had to tell it like it is. Florida was selfish, not wanting James to go to Alaska to make good money was selfish on her part. She always wanted things to go HER way. It was either Florida's way, or no way.
Ireneparalegal 10-28-2006, 09:52 PM Good Lord, Sweet Jesus, now, you and many of you know how I feel abt that Alaska job.
Florida and her soapbox was irritating as hell. Yes, things can be annoying, especially for a man, when he is offered something better and here is your spouse not supporting you. I don't even want to get into the fact that Michael got into that scuffle with the stupid gang. That sh*t would happen regardless if James' was around or not. Look at the facts, James was alive, and in the home and it didn't scare Michael enough to say in FRONT OF HIM THAT THEY WERE GOING TO GET BACK AT THAT GANG! I am not saying it wasn't dangerous in the ghetto, but this job thing occurred after Florida got robbed, Thelma was accosted, etc. It didn't deter James from thinking it was dangerous. They lived in the ghetto all their lives. They had a better handling of it than any other people who didn't live there. My God, I hate, I hate, I hate that Florida cried and cried that she didn't want James to go. Imagine, he could have made enough money in less than two months to get his family OUTTA THE GHETTO!!!!!!!!
GUYS, TELL ME, HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOU WERE IN JAMES' SPOT AND OFFERED THAT JOB IN ALASKA??????
GARFIELDKOOL 10-28-2006, 10:06 PM I understand that part, she didn't want to be far away from her huband. but, James wasn't getting any decent jobs in Chicago, and therefore, he had to take what was being offered. Lots of familes go through this. James was doing this for his family, Florida had to nerve to say he was doing it for himself. I didn't see her going out there to make money. James was an honest man, and was true to Florida, and big mouth Willona had to nerve to feed Florida that crap about him being "en-ter-tained" She should have minded her own business.

Not to mention how the damn kids were whining abt it too. Damn! That annoys me. Seeing how excited when they were going out the door for dinner, they didn't seem bothered by James leaving then, did they???? Even when Seattle was mentioned. They thought they were going with James. So, for them to say later that they didn't want to "leave our friends" (selfish kids) was bullsh*t...they didn't think abt their friends when they were all smiling and going out that damn door for a dinner celebration.

Willona never minded her own business, in fact, none of them did. It was amazing how everyone was in everyone else's business.
It's characters like Flordia Evans that makes me thankful that my generation had T.V moms like Elyse Keaton, Clair Huxtable, Vivian Banks, Roseanne Conner(as much as I detest the show now that it's on everytime), and Hariettte Winslow(Before anyone says anything about Clair, yes, she didn't want Cliff to eat a hoagie, but at least if Cliff had to go to Alaska, she wouldn't run to her room in a whiny temper tandrum fashion or state "God doesn't want you to.")

It pissed me off that Willona stuck her nose in that matter. I mean, really, you could see that Florida was already upset abt Alaska, why bother or hurt her more with EN-TER-TAIN-MENT? What purpose did that serve? A man needs to do what he needs to do and here was an opportunity for James to not only make good $$$ but actually have something good to put on a resume, have a better CAREER, rather than a car wash job. It really annoyed the you know what outta me when Florida told James "You're doing it for you, not for the family." GOD HELP ME...I WANT TO SCREAM WHEN SHE SAID THAT...Sweet Jesus Florida, JAMES WAS DOING IT FOR THE DAMN FAMILY...doing something for yourself is being selfish, and James wasn't selfish. James had pride and at times it was that pride that got in the way of a lot of things, like Florida getting an education or working, but as far as his family was concerned, he was not thinking of himself. If he went out and bought a car to make himself look good knowing his family needs food on the table, THEN, THAT WOULD BE HIM "THINKING OF HIMSELF."
James isn't innocent in this matter either, his pride, like I said got in the way of Florida getting an education where she could get a chance at a job where her $$$ would help with the bills and the rent.
"Well James at least you are getting turned down from better jobs"
Ireneparalegal 11-02-2006, 12:59 PM "Well James at least you are getting turned down from better jobs"
What an insult that was. I mean, I think it was supposed to be funny, some of the audience did laugh...or was it out of embarrasment?
It's bad enough the man gets turned down for menial work, now you think telling him he gets turned down for better jobs is going to lift his ego???? You are only reminding him that he can't get ANY WORK! (except for that Alaska job!)
Scoobiedoo30 11-02-2006, 01:15 PM I really do not remember that episode when Florida got bent out Shape when Michael were going to Sing

It's the JUDITH COHEN STORY episode, where J.J. becomes manager for that girl singer who sings "Be A Clown" and "Send in the Clowns"
Scoobiedoo30 11-02-2006, 01:25 PM Thanks
TVFactFan 11-02-2006, 03:16 PM Especially for $500 a week, you know that was worth traveling for in 1976

Hell yeah it was. I mean, it may not seem much nowadays, with gas prices going up, more money being spent on internet services, cable, etc. Back then, there was no cable, just 13 channels. No internet, no $$$ going to an internet provider. Can you imagine how the Evans' lifestyle would have changed for the BETTER?

Exactly. And how many people who do commercials actually use the product anyway?
