View Full Version : Remembering the Classic Days of Nick at Nite
jbnet21 10-24-2006, 03:12 AM After seeing discussions of so many old shows on here, it really makes me miss a lot of the the black & white classics that used to air on Nick at Nite and the respect the channel used to show them. Getting to stay up late to watch the shows was always a treat for me and I really miss not only the shows but the cute spots in between them. With a little searching I can find episodes of many of these series, but I would be really interested and finding any tapes taped off of Nick at Nite from the 1980s – 1992, with commercials and the schedules of upcoming shows intact. I know this is a weird request but if anyone has anything like this, please let me know.
I have some tapes in my collection of classic Nick shows and specials and hopefully we can work out a trade. Even if you don’t have anything with the commercials intact still let me know as many of the shows are still hard to find.
You can e-mail me at jbstapes@aol.com

Why do they keep certain shows on for ever? I mean I love LITB and Andy Griffith Show (reminds me of my days coming home from school and catching them in reruns on the 2 or 3 US cable channels we used to get back then) but c'mon !!! Enough is Enough already !!
I think it's about time they launch another classic TV network
TVFactFan 10-24-2006, 04:39 PM And let's not forget those stupid westerns ALL day on saturday
Lamont 10-24-2006, 04:45 PM i wish they would have a TVLAND-50s
TVLAND-60s, TVLAND-WESTERN, TVLAND-VARIETY etc etc
i think there is enough interest for it to work

I'd go for that.
With the popularity of DVD releases they should be able to see there is a market for this type of specialized programming. I bet a lot has to do with buying the rights to certain shows that's why we don't see a lot of variety in the programming

seriously, I am with you on this one Solomon, what is up with that??? Can I get an answer for that???? What is it with showing so many western shows back to back to back to back...
Lamont 10-24-2006, 04:55 PM well the western marathons DO attract an audience--- i just wish we would get ANYTHING other than bonanza and gunsmoke all day
some of the shows like Sanford, Good Times, I Love Lucy--- I love them all, BUT I HAVE THE WHOLE SET on retail studio dvd sets, and most of the fans do too-- how about mixing it up a little?

Westerns were very popular. In the early 60's, one year had 23 westerns on in prime time. Western fans are very loyal fans, their interest never waning and most important they will buy. I find them to be very serious, hard core followers, never deviating. If they liked westerns growing up, they still do and want to see their early favorites.

Thanx Harv. I got me an answer!
I feel bad saying stuff abt Westerns, considering my late father LOVED THEM. He watched them anytime they were on. My taste, I just couldn't get into them. The closest I have ever gotten to anything remotely in that category is Little House on the Praire (not a western but still).
lilhave 10-24-2006, 06:00 PM Yeah 12pm to 8pm-lol Eight Hours of Pain-lol
This may be a tough pill to swallow but many feel the same way about the Jeffersons. 72 hours of George and Louise could cause more then just pain. Again it's taste.

Lamont 10-27-2006, 10:59 AM medical shows do not tend to age as well ratings wise
there doesnt seem to be much interest
now E/R can be a hit in reruns but if you go back to the 70s or beyond, there is just not much interest anymore
sad to say....
debwalsh 10-27-2006, 06:00 PM Well, the incredible strides in medicine may have something to do with that. Some of the health crises that fueled those early shows are not significant concerns today. I remember especially in the late '60s and through the '70s, there was a strong tendency toward disease of the week - some of that drama just isn't compelling any longer.
I wonder how shows like House and ER will really stand up to the next generation?

I agree that many of the issues dealt with back then are outdated now (or at least the way the ways they were dealt with are), but when you think about it, no medical or hospital drama has ever really portrayed a realistic account of life on the ward.
You don't get a patient everyday with a never before seen mystery illness, nurses don't always fall inlove with their patients, and the staff aren't always involved in a love triangle with each other (my job would be a heck of a lot more interesting if all that were true  )

Lamont 10-28-2006, 10:49 PM its sort of like how the original Dragnet seems simple nowadays
it just hasnt aged as well
i love the medical shows, but to be honest when i watch Marcus Welby or Dr Kildare, they seem realllllllllllll dated
jbnet21 11-01-2006, 02:36 AM It's a shame that so many of the black and white series, that we used to be able to see on Nick are not even available on DVD let alone on television again. I really enjoyed some classics like
Dobie Gillis
My 3 Sons
Car 54
Patty Duke and
Dennis the Menace
Hopefully I will be able to find some of these somewhere.
Lamont 11-01-2006, 08:24 AM the good thing is that all of those shows are ones that most of us have sets of now
so if u want to trade just ask
Lee G 11-01-2006, 02:33 PM The problem with Nick At Nite was they always cut scenes from the episodes. TV Land does this, too. When Nick At Nite first started out, I believe the shows only had about a minute chopped off of them. Later on, they started airing more commercials and the shows had as much as 3 or 4 minutes chopped off. I have a DVD set of The Patty Duke Show, most are cut episodes from Nick At Nite.
ME-TV in Chicago seems to air shows uncut. I was taping The Patty Duke Show during the summer, they aired the first 14 episodes, all uncut. Then they stopped airing the show. That is what I hate about ME-TV. They will air a show for a short time, then take it off. I guess they are supposed to air Patty Duke again sometime in 2007. So I have to wait until they decide to air the shows again before I can get more episodes. That is bogus. They should just air all the episodes and be done with it.
Famous Mortimer 11-01-2006, 04:29 PM So to a poor uneducated Brit, what sort of shows did they show in "classic" Nick at Nite?
And as an aside- copyright laws are choking what we can see. When the law in some cases is being changed to copyright being held for 50 years after the holder's death, we're never, ever, going to see some of our favourite old shows re-broadcast unless someone is willing to stump up a ton of money. Really, we've all paid for this through the products we buy that are advertised on these shows, ands through original cable fees back in the day, so we should have the right to see more of it. Britain, via Sky, has hundreds of channels available, but all we get is four or five different channels showing, for example, "That 70s Show", sometimes the same day (and sometimes the exact same time) but at different times during its run. Imagine if some small channel, if old shows became public domain, said it was going to broadcast, in their entirety, classic old shows an hour at a time, every night of the week? Advertisers could target ads for the age range of people who originally watched it and collectors like us :)
Lastdaysofrain 11-10-2006, 02:32 PM Nick at Nite used to show great reruns of 70s SNL and a show called "Mad Movies" that I loved as a kid
