Instead of saying something about a funeral couldn't they have just said that Florida and Willona was out SHOPPING? Especially since Willona wasn't in the episode either-lol Never saw the point of writing in all this NEW extra stuff when they could have just kept the absence close to the script as possible

The part about James not knowing which family member of Florida's passed away was dumb, too (Florida called and James told her to have a good time with aunt whoever and she was the one that died). Florida certainly traveled a lot for someone that had no money.

I think they wanted to have Florida away in the episode because there was a sense that this whole ordeal happened over the course of a few days

If Flo came from a big family I could see how James would get her Aunts mixed up especially since they lived miles and miles away. Also it's most likely that FLo took the grey hound, WAY cheaper than a train or plane

Maybe I am closer to my family than most, because I can tell one aunt from another. I don't care how big a family is.

If you read my post, I said that "I could see how James wouldn't know which one of Florida's aunts had died." Not his own aunt of course. If you and your spouse lived hundreds of miles away and you have lived far away for 20 something odd years, and you hardly visit their family, how in the world would you remember who each and every person was in their family?

If all of this were the case, I wouldn't go to their funeral at all (and I am talking about Florida and James)

I really didn't have a problem with the funeral excuse.

I have no prob with the funeral reason. Why would she be out shopping be a better reason. Either way she left. Willona could have been doing "inventory" or something.

Brie, I totally agree with you. I can't keep my other half's family straight, and he can't keep mine straight either.

Why not if it's your own aunt??? Of course you would know who people are in your family. But that doesn't mean that your spouse would know who everyone was.

They just could have tied their absence to something that was already in the script. If John amos was absent just say that he was working overtime at Bradys, if Florida was absent just say she was out at Marshall Fields ith Willona, if J.J was absent just say that he was out on a date with Boom Boom Belinda instead some ART CONVENTION crap-lol

why would they say they were out at Marshall Fields when they could barely afford Walmart?

Because it was mentioned in the script

The whole part of the episode was suppose to be about JJ joining the Army. And if Flo was at Marshall Fields, James and JJ wouldn't have had time to lose their jobs. And then have JJ go down to enlist and then have James go down and get JJ back. All this happening while Flo was out shopping at Marshall Fields

Wouldn't have made any sense.

Exactly.

The show mentioned Cadillacs, doesn't mean that J.J. or anyone of them had to own one.  Just because they mentioned Marshall Fields doesn't mean they shopped there.

And why does it have to be the same ol' shopping excuse? This enlistment thing took most of the day, it didn't just take one hour of James' time, which would explain why the Flo character needed to be gone longer than an hour or two. And how could Willona go shopping with her when Willona had a job?

I seem to recall something else in this episode, I believe it was edited out. I know there is another scene missing or a portion missing.

I dont know much about writing scripts, but in using common sense I cant believe these writers did not review and give more attention to what they were putting out, and how the audience would intepret this. It also seems that did not give much credit to the audience as a whole.

We have had discussions abt that before. It seems, that the writers thought that "we" the audience would swallow anything, so it didn't matter what they had written or what seemed unusual, out of place or incorrect. A good example is the Willona and her ex-husband syndrome. Willona talked abt that man MANY TIMES in different episodes. Then, when Thelma gets married, Willona talks abt him to Michael and Thelma as if SHE NEVER MENTIONED HIM BEFORE. Also, he was referred by two different names in different episodes. There are so many discrepencies.

your right about that

Funny thing is though, when watching this show during it's first run, I never noticed the discrepencies because the show was on once a week. It was then shown in syndication and even then I didn't catch those. I think it was the second time around in syndication that I started to catch them. Not all of them, but some of them.
