Killer Says He's Too Obese for Execution
By ANDREW WELSH-HUGGINS, AP

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Oct. 18) - A federal judge on Tuesday delayed the Oct. 24 execution of cult leader Jeffrey Lundgren to allow him to join a lawsuit filed by five other death row inmates challenging the state's use of lethal injection.

In his request to join the lawsuit, Lundgren, 56, said he is at even greater risk of experiencing pain and suffering during the procedure than other inmates because he is overweight and diabetic.

Similar lawsuits filed in several states have led to the halting of executions in Missouri, Delaware and New Jersey. Opponents have argued that the use of the lethal injection is unconstitutionally cruel and painful and that the procedure is often carried out without specifically trained medical personnel present.

But Ohio's method of lethal injection came under national scrutiny by death penalty opponents in May after problems slowed the execution of another inmate who was a former intravenous drug user and the vein the execution team chose collapsed as the chemicals started flowing.

While Judge Gregory Frost issued an order temporarily delaying Lundgren's execution, he said it appears to him that potential flaws with Ohio's execution process could easily be corrected.

"Thus, any delay in carrying out Lundgren's execution should and can be minimal," Frost said.

State Attorney General Jim Petro will appeal the ruling to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, said spokesman Mark Anthony.

Lundgren sentence stems from a conviction for the fatal shooting of a family of five in 1989. The family, which included three children, were killed while they stood in a pit dug inside his barn in northeast Ohio.

Lundgren, who formed a cult after he was dismissed in 1987 as a lay minister of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, now known as the Community of Christ, had said passages in the Bible told him to kill the family. Several witnesses said the family was not as enthusiastic about the cult as Lundgren would have liked.

The family he killed had moved from Missouri in 1987 to follow Lundgren's teachings.

Frost's decision allows Lundgren to join a 2004 lawsuit brought by death row inmate Richard Cooey, convicted of the rape and murder of two University of Akron students in 1986.

Cooey argues that the way chemicals used in lethal injection are administered makes the process painful enough to amount to cruel and unusual punishment, in violation of the constitution.

Four other inmates had previously joined the lawsuit.

It is still legal in some states too. I think as recently as 1996 it was used.

Well, they should make him watch a bunch of Richard Simmons tapes, and then kill him. He'll regret he ever complained to begin with.

It's amazing how much rational thought and deliberation about human suffering these men have done when they are in prison.

It's a shame they didn't give a damn about human beings when they were free.

Not much about Chinese law enforcement I agree with but I do like their verson of the death penalty.

Bullet to the head and then bill the estate for the cost of the bullet.

From what I just researched on the net three drugs are typically used during a lethal injection: Sodium thiopental (induces unconsciousness), Pancuronium bromide (paralyze muscles) and Potassium chloride (stops heart, cardiac arrest).

So the criminals are most worried about the pain -- ironic, oh yes. Sodium thiopental is the drug that controls that then so let's concentrate on that.
From what I've read a 5 gram dose is typically given during execution, never any less apparently. This drug's effectiveness correlates with this ratio (3-5 mg/kg) ~ 3-5 milligrams of the drug per kilogram of the criminal's weight.

Therefore, hypothetically, let's say Jeffrey Lundgren weighs 300 lbs.
There are 2.2 lbs per kilogram. So he's about 136 kg.
Thus, 5mg/kg * 136 kg = 682 mg or 0.682 grams
So for the drug to be effective he would need at least 0.682 grams.

However, he'll be getting 5 grams. That's 733% the amount required in his case. His obesity will not matter. He would have to weigh 2,200 lbs for that dosage not to have an effect.

The article cites an example of an intravenous drug user whose veins collapsed during the procedure in Ohio. Now that would be a problem, perhaps death row prisioners (with drug use backgrounds) should be prepped by a physician ahead of time to make sure such veins will be available and healthy enough for the procedure. However, Lundgren's argument has no application here. His obesity in no way will inhibit access to his veins. A little application of rubbing alcohol and those luscious blood vessels will rise to the top, easy access for the injection. Fat or no fat.

Cased closed, I'm going save tax payer money and email them my post.

Yes, we should be so very concerned about the feelings and welfare of murderers and rapists.

As far as I'm concerned, they have no rights and ought to be thanking God they're still alive after what they did. When they took a human life in cold blood, they voided out any claim to having human rights of their own.

But what's even scarier is that the democratic candidate running for Governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick, has risen to the defense of not only a cop killer, but a rapist as well. I hope to God this fool does not become the next governor of Massachusetts. What's even scarier than all this is that he's leading in the polls.

Wow, killed the whole family because they weren't excited about his cult as he would have liked them to be? Guess you just got to be careful about which church you go to these days.

There was a case like this here in Washington some years ago, an inmate was "too fat" to hang. Bastards just get away with so much crap in this state. Got an idea: let his LAST MEAL BE HIS STYLE OF EXECUTION!! Let's see, give him Oreo cookie sundaes, chocolate peanut butter cheesecake, two tubs of Kentucky Fried Chicken Extra Crispy, two 64-oz. cartons of Nesquik double chocolate....Put that sucker into a diabetic coma before he knows it. :faint: puke:

That's what I was thinking. Why not just put him on a strict diet and exercise routine for a few months and then maybe he won't be "too fat" to be executed. Still, it sounds like a lame excuse to trying to get out of something he did wrong.
