View Full Version : Ladies: How bad is it for you during your "time of the month"? (sorry guys)
Ireneparalegal 10-17-2006, 04:16 PM Also, do you notice if you have it start around the same time as other females who you are close with?
My poor daughter is 17 and suffers from severe pain. It is so intense. She would miss so much school because of it. For this reason and one other, I ended up having to take her out of school and put her in independent studies. I know when I was a teen it seemed bad, but looking back, it was nothing like it is now for me. It is HELL! I get symptoms at least a week before. THEN! I have it and it seems to last for a good 8 days. Severe cramping, headaches, feeling BLAH and depression. I would give anything not to deal with this crap again. What I hate is when this sharp intense cramping takes over and it feels like someone is stabbing me!!!!
I always know when I will start, first, because of the pain I endure a week before it starts. Then, when one of my daughter's begins, that tells me I will soon start. It never fails, just like clockwork, one starts, then the other daughter starts and then me. ONE, TWO, THREE!!!! My poor boyfriend and our son.
Courtnee 10-17-2006, 04:23 PM It's horrible. I'm accually going to the doctor tommorow to see about being put on a light birth control to stop the pain.

My daughter was given a prescription for that. However, she didn't notice a difference. She is also diabetic, so she didn't like the side effects it was giving her. I hope for you it really helps. My niece received a prescription for that reason as well.

Thank you, mum. I just need something to take the edge off. I throw up at least once during that time from the pain. It's horrible.

That is horrible. I hope this will help you, really I do. Life is hard enough for us ladies without dealing with this "interruption"...

That actually started happening to me recently too.
It's horrible for me. Plus I get cysts on my ovaries like...every month. They say it's normal, but it's definitely not a fun experience at all. Basically I feel like dying. I've thrown up a few times from the pain too, like I said above. I get horrible mood swings where everything irritates me and upsets me and I get this awful anxiety thing for no reason. And theres the feeling of a knife in my back...and front. And this is all before it starts.
Being a girl sucks.
Number 9 Dream 10-17-2006, 06:43 PM I get it pretty bad on the first day, but it gradually eases off as the days go by. There have been a few occasions where I've had to take off work because my pain was so bad (I was practically doubled over). Mostly, though, I have to say I am pretty lucky with it.

JO jr 10-17-2006, 06:56 PM IN READING THESE COMMENTS, IT MAKES ME WONDER IF ANY OF YOU HAVE TALKED TO YOUR DOCTOR, OR HAVE DONE RESEARCH ON THE POSSIBLITY OF ENDOMETRIOSIS.
MY FRIEND DESCRIBED THE PAIN AND SYSTOMS TO ME. THEY ARE MORE INTENSE THAN WHAT USUALLY ACCOMODATES A PERIOD. SHE SAID THERE WERE DAYS SHE COULDN'T EVEN GO INTO WORK, DUE TO THE PAIN. SHE WAS PRESCRIBED BIRTH CONTROL YEARS AGO TO CONTROL IT.
PLEASE, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, AND INQUIRE ABOUT THIS; BECAUSE IF IN FACT ANY OF YOU HAVE IT, YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET RELIEF! HOPE THIS HELPS:)

Yep. My doctor has checked me for that. His reasoning for my pain (and I don't doubt it) is when I had spinal surgery, the surgery was done anteriorally. Through the front, almost like a c-section. The surgeon had to get bone from my hip, the reason for him doing it this way. He then fused my spine using my hip bone. Ever since my surgery, my periods have never been the same. NEVER! :( The surgeon having to move all my insides and uterus outta the way to get to my spine. OUCH!!!
PZelda 10-17-2006, 08:17 PM Well, back when I used to get my period... (yay for HBC that stops bleeding :D)
They changed a lot from the time I first got it (age 13) until this year.
The first 1 1/2 or so years that I had it, the cramps were mind-numbingly awful. I would be at school when the cramps hit, and I would have to put my head down on my desk and whimper silently because it was so bad, and I came close to blacking out on a couple of occasions too. I used to have to go home in the middle of the day when the cramps hit, because it was REALLY hard to concentrate on schoolwork with the pain. The flow sucked, too. :( And I knew it was coming when I would get cramps and break out in zits.
About two years after I first started, they straightened themselves out, my cramps weren't as bad (i.e., it stopped making me almost black out), but I still had a heavy flow. Still got cramps and broke out in zits before it started.
Sometime after I graduated from high school and moved back home, they changed again... This time, the flow was REALLY light, but the cramps came back with a vengeance. My god... AWFUL. And I also started something new, cramping like a bitch when it was time for me to ovulate. Either way, I cramped for up to two weeks out of every month, which sucked MAJOR ass. The cramps when I ovulated were awful, too. Oftentimes, I was bleeding for only two to three days (mine were never even more than four days, even when I first started), and the flow was just really light... so it doesn't make sense to me at all.
I've been on HBC for a while now, and I still break out in zits around the time my period was supposed to arrive, and I still experience cramping once in a while, but it's NOTHING like it used to be. So, I'm thankful. I love not having to deal with bleeding every month now. :D And god... I would turn into such a bitch too. Doesn't happen now, though.
Kay Scarpetta 10-17-2006, 08:32 PM I've been on the Pill for years. Obviously I'm on it for the most obvious reasons, but it also lessons the length of my period (4 days) and I have absolutely NO cramps whatsoever. Before being on the Pill, I'd be in the ER with them. It was horrible.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 10-17-2006, 08:44 PM I don't get much trouble from mine other than the fact that I'm anemic so I lose more blood than a person who took a gun to the head. But generally I don't really bloat or get too bad cramps. I used to get horrible cramps but I really don't feel much pain anymore...it does suck that the ones that do come come days before I actually get it, though.
Brieannas21 10-17-2006, 08:47 PM I suffer from chronic menstrual cramps, My cramps are so bad that they go from my lower abdomen to my lower back and down my legs. I also have a heavy blood flow, from the time I start till the time I stop. When I was in the 9th grade I was put on birth control pills to deal with the pain, but that didn't help at all. So after that, I was prescribed naproxen for a while. Then I stopped taken that and now I just take 3 Aleve every couple hrs. It dulls the pain to where I can stand it.
So I feel your daughters pain.
One BC that she can take is the seasonle you have like 4 periods a yr. And theres another one that my doc told me about, I can't think of the name right now.
dawsongirl 10-17-2006, 09:37 PM Man, I'm lucky. Pre-Anxiety/Depression: No cramping whatsoever, no PMS, lasted about 5-6 days. Most annoying thing was just the bleeding, which wasn't abnormal or anything...just gross. Post Anxiety/Depression: For some reason, once my brain went , my period changed. Now it's shorter, and effects my digestive system more. Sometimes (not every period), I get to feeling, well, poopy. lol But I'm not, it just feels that way. More a dull ache than a pain.
Never have been perfectly regular though.

My mom had that. Her periods were insanely heavy. They just took her uterus out eventually.
~LadyJess~ 10-17-2006, 09:55 PM Mine's not bad. Usually only lasts 3 or 4 days and the 2nd day is the only heavy one. If I get cramps at all it's the first night and it takes awhile to fall asleep. I do get pretty pissy/emotional the week before my period starts, but once again that's it.

As a matter of fact, my daughter's doctor wanted her to try the regular BC pills and see how that works, if it didn't help, she would put her on the ones that cause one to only have four periods a year. But I guess my daughter was so frustrated with the regular BC pills and having to remember to take them, that she said "forget it." It's her choice, I can't force it on her. Maybe she will change her mind later.

The birth control pills didn't do anything but make me gain weight and prevented me from getting pregnant. I think it was just a waste of time, after a year on BC pills I was put on naproxen and then I was taken off that because my mom didn't want it to become and addiction. After that I took Tylenol and that stopped working and now I take Aleve. My husband thinks that I'll overdose on Aleve because I'll take 3 every two hrs or so. Men just don't know the pain a woman goes through.

They sure don't. The thing abt BC pills is, it's pointless for me for the reasons you stated and because my tubes are tied. I am 41, I take other medication for back pain and other stuff without having to worry abt taking another pill. I WANT MY UTERUS OUT
ponytail 10-18-2006, 07:04 AM My periods are irregular, either too early or late. I do recommend progesterone cream. You can get at the health food store. Look at the label though, if it parabens in it don't buy. Look for all natural progesterone cream. Follow the directions, it relieves alot of the symptoms.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 10-18-2006, 08:30 AM My period is the worst thing ever. I got it when I was... 13 and itd be off and up until I was about 17/18 where it finally got somewhat normal. The first few years Id get it once a year, every 6 months, etc.. totally unpredictable. Past couple years has probably been the most regular, and I find that when Im eating healthy and sticking to my diet, its the best. I went to the gyno for it last year and was put on the pill, but I didnt like it so I stopped. It worked too! lol. My period is ridiculously heavy - wearing 3 overnight pads and that doesnt always work. Its very frustrating, especially when Id have it for 14 days and then get it every 2.5 weeks. Thats how it was all last year before the pill and it really took a toll on me. Im also THE BIGGEST BITCH during it and get very emotional, Im like a rollercoaster. Cramps come and go.. some periods theyre mellow [like right now], but last time I had it [which was from this July-September] they were aweeeeeeeeeeeful in the beginning. I was at work laying on a table wanting to throw up. One way I can always tell Im gonna get my period is I get diahrea the first or 2nd day, no idea why, but it happens. My period isnt too bad right now, but Ive gotten back on track eating wise this past week or so and I really think thats affecting it. I hope so, Ive been trying really hard. As for other symptoms, Ill wake up in the morning with cold-like symptoms and as the morning goes on, they dissapear.

Wow!!!! That is BAD!!!!!!!!! Damn, the crap us ladies go through. I don't know how it would be if I had to go to work with this going on. I know I would be calling in sick a lot and ending up losing my job. I am blessed I can be home and work from here. I feel for the ladies who have to deal with going to work and having to deal with pain, cramps, and all the other symptoms. Men, really haven't a clue. I am sure they think they can understand, especially if they have a girlfriend or wife, but they can't imagine the overall pain and drama, not to mention the moodiness that can come with it.
However, I don't want men to think that whenever a woman is moody or bitchy, that she is ON HER PERIOD. That is the stupidest thing that can come out of a man's mouth. "Oh she is bitchy, it's that time of the month." NO SUCKER. Maybe there are other things going on in our lives, like work, business, career, financial problems, stupid men, etc. Hey, I have seen plenty of "bitchy" men, and I highly doubt it's because they are having their period.
Chocoholic 10-18-2006, 03:07 PM I hate getting my period! I get all irritable and break out in zits during the week before, then I'm cramped, bloated, bleeding, and pissy for another week.

Its awwwwweful. Usually the heavier/more intense the period is, the more the symptoms are noticeable. Like this time around its pretty mellow so my mood swings, cravings, etc. arent so bad. Sometimes when its really bad I have cravings in the worst way and I mean THE WORST WAY lol.
Ireneparalegal 10-18-2006, 10:04 PM My periods, as I stated before are easy; and I think the reason why, is because I am a very active person (I run 8 miles a day) and I am in good shape; so I highly recommend becoming active physcially, like walking, etc. I rarely get cramps, my flow is normal and my periods usually do not last more than four days (and I am also very regular..every 28 days on the spot!); the only set back I have, I am a major, overly emotional bitch:lol: I need to stay away from my car (and driving) because yesterday, I drove through a red light (praise the Lord, there were not any cops around *knock on wood*)

Auntie 10-19-2006, 08:55 AM Thank you, mum. I just need something to take the edge off. I throw up at least once during that time from the pain. It's horrible.
When I was in high school, I'd end up in the nurse's office from the pain, almost passing out. Now, the pain isn't as bad as when I was a teenager, but I still get cramps and everthing else that comes along with it. Also, I wanted to ask you girls, when you get it, does it ever put you in a bad mood? Me, when I have it and someone gets an attiude with me, prepare for a fight! (not physical).
BensonFan 10-19-2006, 01:24 PM I just get moody and extremely emotional. That's when I'll start thinking of my dad who died 5 years ago and cry like it just happened.
I also get cramps and lower back pain. Yeah, guys, it's LOADS of fun!
Ireneparalegal 10-19-2006, 02:00 PM When I was in high school, I'd end up in the nurse's office from the pain, almost passing out. I get an attitude with anyone who messes with me AT ANYTIME!:D
The thing with most women is the pain is more than cramps, as it has been posted, it can lead to lower back pain. For me, that is especially true. The uterus gets so bloated and filled that it presses on my lower spine, where I had my spine fused/operated on. So that area of my back is prone to recurring pain, flare-ups (as I stated a few weeks ago when I was in bed for almost two weeks). ADD A BLOATED UTERUS, and we are talking major lower back pain. And as anyone can tell you, back pain makes one feel like sh*t ALL OVER, physically and mentally. So of course, we are not going to be in the best of moods.
Hey guys, if you read this, try doing your job with a major headache, a stabbing pain in your lower back and a major stomach ache where you are doubling over from the pain. JUST TRY TO IMAGINE THAT FOR AT LEAST THREE DAYS. Some of us have to deal with it for more than that. I get my symptoms a week before and then I have to deal with my actual period for another 7 FUN FILLED DAYS!
LuLu Rogers 10-20-2006, 02:41 PM I didn't start my period until I was 16. The doctor checked me out and said that I needed to be put on birth control to stay regular. Even on the BC pills I still have bad cramps and I bleed pretty heavy. My mother, sister and I are all a week apart, so my dad wants to run and hide during those 3 weeks of the month. LOL!
*MIBabe03* 10-20-2006, 04:35 PM Well I take bc pills and don't have any kind of physical pain problems with it at all. Emotionally is different though. I can cry for hours for no reason at all.
