View Full Version : The episode-"The First Store" is the WORST of the series
TVFactFan 10-14-2006, 06:44 PM This is when they do a flashback to when George was trying to get a loan for the store in 1968 and Martin Luther King was shot. What made the episode strange is they never come back from the Flashback, the episode just ends with Martin Luther King preaching. Unless this is only on the TV LAND version. Strong Possibility
Ireneparalegal 10-14-2006, 06:46 PM Nope, that's how it ended. The point was being made by Martin Luther King rather than the characters. His voice over the credit.
TVFactFan 10-14-2006, 06:56 PM Nope, that's how it ended. The point was being made by Martin Luther King rather than the characters. His voice over the credit.
Are you sure?-lol He were go again, you do know this episode was aired 26 years ago? I just having trouble believing CBS would never go back to the present with George and Louise in the Kitchen
Ireneparalegal 10-14-2006, 06:59 PM I remember it during it's first run. I remember for the fact that my brother watched it with me and he said, "That's it?" referring to how it ended. He wanted the flashback to end and have them go back to the present, like you. Then, seeing it in syndication so much, I never forgot. I would see that ending and I always think of what my brother said. He used a cuss word, but you get my drift.

Do you think George COMB his hair to the front for the Flashback or did he have on a hairpiece?-lol

I actually liked this episode. I wished George would have thrown that racist banker out on his ass from the get go, because he did nothing but insult George and black people the minute he set foot in their apartment.

Do you think George should have had his hair the way he did in the flashback?lol
GARFIELDKOOL 10-14-2006, 09:53 PM Do you think George should have had his hair the way he did in the flashback?lol
Yeah, because obviously he was younger in 1968.

Do you think the a hair piece or did he just take a big ass comb and take everything to the front?-lol
GARFIELDKOOL 10-14-2006, 10:11 PM Do you think the a hair piece or did he just take a big ass comb and take everything to the front?-lol
It was a hairpiece. He was receding too much for that to be combed over in front.
I think you knew that.

It really didn't look like one to me

I agree. Definitely a hairpiece.

Well that's he should have looked all the Time-lol
jamesanthony 10-15-2006, 05:23 PM I actually consider this one of the best episodes from the 80s. The acting was better than usual. To me there was no need to go back to 1980. The guy that played Mr. Drew from the bank was very good in that part. The other flashback episode Change of A Dollar in season 9 was terrible- corny idea, no reference at all to Lionel, it had a stale feeling to it.
Janice 10-15-2006, 09:10 PM Is this the episode with the framed dollar bill on the wall? I love that episode.

I think that episode is called-"Change of A Dollar"

definitely a hair piece...and to answer the comment about should he had kept his hair like he had it in the flashback....no...I like the receding hair line better on him....

What made the Flashback hairstyle so Bad?-lol
lil_weezy 10-19-2006, 11:47 AM just something about it wasn't working for me..

He should have just took all his hair off like Lou Gossett
hcollinsmith72 10-19-2006, 11:30 PM I don't think the bald head is for eveybody lol!
James"Thunder"Early 10-21-2006, 06:11 PM I hadn't seen this episode until the Jeffersons marathon in September and I liked it right off.
hcollinsmith72 10-21-2006, 10:41 PM I dont think its the worse, but its not one of my favorites
71dude 11-13-2006, 10:14 AM This ep isn't as bad as Red Robins.
mstewart 11-13-2006, 11:09 AM The episode with George and Louise opening their first cleaning store I did not care for. I did like that Isabel wore her hair the way she did when I first saw her on All in the Family. Those wigs she wore were horrendous some seasons. It looked obvious that she was wearing a wig.
jamesanthony 11-13-2006, 04:00 PM I really dislike Change of A Dollar although I've read posts by more than one person who count it as one of their favorites. This is actually my least favorite episode. After this the one I most strongly dislike is Off Off Broadway (the last one produced) It is a very very weak show on many levels. Red Robins isn't great either, but at least Jessica is in it. The Truth Hurts just before that one is also not too good. Those last three episodes have a running on fumes quality to them.
From the last 4 seasons (Mike Evans and Paul Benedict's departure are the point when this show entered its downward phase for me) my personal favorites are:
Blazing Jeffersons
the one where the Whittendale's dog dies (Doggone?)
The Command Post
Otis
Sayonara pts 1 and 2
Back to Basiks
The Odd Couple
That Blasted Cunningham
State of Mind
In the Chips

In this episode, I noticed the Jeffersons apartment looked like the one in the episode where George was sending gifts to the family living in his childhood home.
hcollinsmith72 11-13-2006, 10:00 PM I didnt care for Red Robbins, but I cant recall seeing off off broadway

I never saw OFF OFF Broadway which is why I'm looking forward to it. I know Mabel King from Whats Happening is that ep

Mabel King plays Florence's fairy godmother in Some Enchanted Evening. She isn't in Off Off Broadway. Julius J. Wright is the only guest of note in Off Off Boradway which is a very weak episode. It just screams "this is the last show of the season" The "let's put on a show" season ending episodes of Good Times (years 3 and 5) are better than this.

I doubt if season 5 eps of Good Times is better thann any eps of the Jeffersons-lol

Wait until you see Off Off Broadway. The year 5 Good Times final isn't very good at all (I fast forwarded through the tape it was so boring) but IMO Off Off Broadway is WORSE.
hcollinsmith72 11-14-2006, 11:00 PM I need to see this ep.. was it that bad?
TVFactFan 11-14-2006, 11:50 PM I need to see this ep.. was it that bad?
Well we wll find out in December
jamesanthony 11-15-2006, 02:05 PM I need to see this ep.. was it that bad?
Yep- part of my strong dislike for it is it's the very last episode- but even if it wasn't it is still weak. They could've done a much better job with the basic plot, it has a kind of "we don't care, it's the last show of the season let's just slap any old thing together and call it an episode" quality to it" But you guys watch for it next month and form your own opinions.
