View Full Version : The I Hate Kelly Thread
factsoflife 10-11-2006, 03:31 AM am i the only one that really hates Kelly? she is so self-absorbed and likes telling everyone what to do... she always talks down to donna and makes Brenda look like the witch when she was a man-stealing witch... and she was never nice to Val, from the moment the poor girl set foot in Beverly Hills.
Chain Gang Member 10-11-2006, 06:24 PM What?I always thought she was cute and sweet.Well except for the time that she was doing cocaine with Collen

She didn't like Val from the beginning because she knew what a bitch she was going to be. Some people have that intuition. I have had my intuition work very well for me regarding certain females. No one else could "smell" it, but I could. And I was always right. It is usually the males who can't smell it. Kelly got on my nerves at times, but she had her reasons for hating Val. And we all know Val was just asking for it.
Buffyboy323 10-11-2006, 08:05 PM ^ I used to love her bitch fights with Val. So classic.....Anyway, I always liked Kelly, except for when she snuck around with Dylan, when Brenda went to France. Oh, and her fued with Valerie- Only cause Val's my favorite character. ;)
factsoflife 10-12-2006, 12:47 AM i hate kelly... she started out in high school as a cheap tramp who slept with all the guys and then stole Brenda's boyfriend, then in college she treated Val like crap, for no reason, Val NEVER did anything to her... and she always talked to Donna like she was an idiot, once even yelling at her for going out with DeShawn Hardell...

factsoflife 02-15-2007, 11:00 AM Hey nobody's perfect
and that's exactly why i hated kelly because she always acted like she was perfect...
Chain Gang Member 02-16-2007, 11:10 AM Not all the time if she did.Remember she told the girls how she lost her virginity to a jerk that she wished she never did it with?

no she blamed it on him. but if she didn't want it she could have said no...
Chain Gang Member 02-19-2007, 09:53 AM SHe said that he told her that she knew she wanted to and she said that she did then started crying:(
Heckles101 02-19-2007, 04:57 PM factsoflife, can I be vice president of the I Hate Kelly club? She was cool when she was just the bitchy secondary character but when they pushed her to lead after Brenda left, the girl became an haughty, sanctimonious, self-rigetous, hypocritical little snot. And the Kelly/Dylan relationship was one of the worse. Didn't have to natural chemistry Brenda/Dylan did and all they did was bicker and make each other miserable. Yup, couldn't stand her and I always wanted Val to just cut that bitch LOL.

Very well said, and totally correct. i'll never forget one time when Kelly YELLED AT DONNA and called her a rhymes with blut because donna wanted to date Dashawn Hardell... i was like, Kelly you are not her mother. and i hated that she STOLE BRENDA'S BOYFRIEND and then everyone called BRENDA the rhymes with witch word.
Sophie Treadmill 07-20-2007, 10:40 AM What I didn't like was the direction the writers went with the character. I thought Kelly was far more interesting in the first couple of seasons than she was as time progressed. In the beginning she was very much the snobby/spoiled quintessential Beverly Hills teen, which I thought was great, as it made the character more interesting and believable. I mean, it was a show about growing up in BH, after all. I expect at least one of the characters to embody a few snobby/spoiled qualities. Not that you have to grow up in BH to have those qualities, but I digress.
After Shannen Doherty left, it seemed the writers transformed the Kelly character from the things I mentioned above into someone who was judgmental and self-righteous. My guess is that the writers did that because she had to become the heroine after Doherty left, and they didn't want the lead female to embody the BH stereotype. Maybe it's just me, but I think it would have been far more interesting watching her progress from a spoiled teen to struggling with adulthood. But we really didn't get that, IMO.

Kelly was one of the most developed characters from the whole entire series...She was snobby in high school, but there was always another side to her nice as well. She wasn't just a plain bitch, which made the character more interesting.
Kelly needed to grow up, and change. It was believable when it happened, because she didn't just become nice overnight. We watched her grow up.
I don't think it was so much that they wanted their female lead to be extra nice, and lose that certain Beverly Hills sterotype, but if you think about it, Valerie came in soon after Brenda left. Valerie was THE bitch of the show, so they had to soften Kelly up a bit. And those 2 bumped heads a lot of the time, so that also made it seem like Kelly was the nice girl next door.

I respectfully disagree, because the character's transition did feel a bit contrived to me. I love it when writers allow a character to develop and change, it just felt as though the transition wasn't done very well, IMO.
As for the "bitch" part, I am not talking about a one-dimensional kind of person, I was thinking more along the lines of classic BH kid, which is partly why the audience was pulled in to begin with, we wanted to see BH teens and their lives.
You're right, there were other sides to her character and that's exactly what I'm talking about, not the cliched soapy bitch-type. I guess I wanted at least one character to inhabit more of a detached/apathetic, Bret Easton Ellis kind of vibe. This kind of bitch can actually be pretty provocative in terms of character development, and I was wishing the writers had went that way with her. The kind of bitch Val was, is completely different than the bitch character I saw possibilities for in Kellie. Val's more vampy soap, whereas high school Kelly bitch could have had real promise in terms of writing and character development that allowed her to grow up.
You're right, the writers did allow her to grow up and change from being a snobby high school and that part is great! I'm just saying there is a way to let her retain some of her high school self in a way that's thought-provoking and yet retains a peculair, distinctive BH air about it. I wanted see her change, but I did think she became a bit sanctimonious.
I couldn't agree more with your points about Valerie! I have a couple of thoughts about that character too, but I'll save it for another thread. ;)

Exactly. I started hating Kelly when she stole Dylan away from Brenda and then started going from boyfriend to boyfriend. I especially didn't like her hookup with Brandon. She was a real Bitch.

i totally agree. Kelly did become very sanctimonious and self-rightoues and it happened too quickly... they never allowed her to develop the caring side of her that they started throwing down our throats and making it seem like she was the nicest character ever...
and then there's Val who Kelly was mean to from day one, she never treated Val with respect... whatever Brenda was better anyways.

I do see your point, and I agree that it was a bit contrived, but it didn't really bother me that much....At that point in the show, there was a lot more stuff happening, and it was becoming more racey (sp?) and adult*like, so I was into the stories as they happened, rather than watching, and scratching my head at how nice Kelly was this week, compared to last...But I still do think the change was good. I liked her as a somewhat snobby teen, but I liked her better grown up.
And I'd love to hear your thoughts about Valerie, my favorite character.
Sophie Treadmill 07-22-2007, 01:39 PM Great point about the show becoming more soapy by this time! Really, I see BH in two or three different eras, so to speak---high school teenage drama/soap and the college years when the soap vibe was amped up quite a bit. I've hardly seen anything post-college. At least not with any continuity. I didn't watch much past Val's first season or so, but I really dug her character. Val was a great addition to cast, IMO.
I've made a thread for her, so meet me in there if you'd like to share your thoughts about her!
ETA: I even had trouble finding this thread at first, because I thought it would be in the soap thread. Sure, it wasn't a daytime soap, but when I think of BH, I do think "soap" so, it being here in the drama thread threw me off a bit.

Buffyboy323 07-22-2007, 05:11 PM who was the lady who played Kelly
Jennie Garth (also of What I Like About You) played Kelly for 10 years, on Beverly Hills 90210.
Sophie Treadmill 07-22-2007, 07:25 PM She's also been in quite a few made for Lifetime movies. I haven't seen them, but if you like her, keep your eye out for her on that channel as well.

Yep....Many of them went on to do Lifetime TV movies. Jennie, Tori, Shannen, Brian, and even the beloved Tiffani. (There's probably more too)
Sophie Treadmill 07-23-2007, 10:40 AM I don't think you can beat Tori's Lifetime career. Hee! After all, she was in "Mother, May I Sleep With Danger" (which I've never had the pleasure of seeing) and "Co-Ed Call Girl." How can you not loves those titles? :D
Scoobiedoo30 07-23-2007, 04:18 PM I not sure but was Shannon let go
Sophie Treadmill 07-23-2007, 06:31 PM Yes, Shannen was let go from the show. Apparently she was difficult to work with on the set; there were lots of tabloid stories about it at the time. Eventually, she did appear on another Aaron Spelling show, Charmed, but ended leaving that show too. I'm not sure of the story on that; I've heard rumors, but never knew if anything was confirmed, so I don't know if it was of her volition or not.
Madame X 07-23-2007, 09:40 PM The only thing that really got on my nerves about Kelly was when she talked in a little-girl voice.
Buffyboy323 07-23-2007, 10:05 PM The only thing that really got on my nerves about Kelly was when she talked in a little-girl voice.
Jennie Garth naturally talks like that. She has a very soft voice. I think it`s cute, LOL....She still talks like that, in her thirties.

Yep, Shannen was let go from Charmed as well (and for a lot of the same reasons as to why she left 90210)....And as you can imagine, that's for a whole other thread, LOL.

Haha!....I remember Tori was being attacked by her boyfriend in one movie. That was bad. Even funny.....And there's even one that had Shannen singing in some sort of tavern or bar!

Hee! I remember that one, it was cheesetastic! It's sort of a cheesy cult classic to some. I think it was called Friends til the End or something like that? I remember Heather Blanc and either Jason or Jeremy London (I can't tell them apart). Love the London twins, btw.

I think your right about the title! It sounds familiar.....I've seen it several times, even though it was god aweful. I love Shannen, so I'd watch anything with her....Yes, even the horrid Scare Tactics (on the SciFi channel), and her Oxygen show.....I also remmeber her in this really bad movie where there was some kind of snow storm in the mountains. I don't even remember the storyline, that's how long ago, and how bad it was.
I only know the London twins from 7th Heaven (LMAO!), and I think 1 of them was on Party Of Five for a while. I've seen them in little parts in stuff, but I really don't remember what.
Sophie Treadmill 07-24-2007, 10:38 AM LMAO! I'm pretty the same way about Shannen Doherty too!
I first saw one of the London twins in I'll Fly Away, which was a critically-acclaimed drama set in the South during the Civil Rights movement. It was a fantastic show. That was in the early 90's, I think. Then I saw one of them in Man in the Moon with Reese Witherspoon (she was about 12 years old here). And who could forget Randall "Pink" Floyd in Dazed and Confused? Oh, and one of them was in Kevin Smith's Mallrats with Shannen Doherty.
Whew, I finally yapped my way back to the topic! :D That was like an unintentional game of Six Degrees or something.

Haha! That was a lot to take in.....
And back to the topic of hating Kelly (which I do not!)....She had her highs (literally!) and lows. I like her. 90210 wouldn't have been the same without her.
Sophie Treadmill 07-24-2007, 03:00 PM I don't think it would've been the same without her either. Knowing that Dylan and Brandon left (and came back?) is one thing, but I can't imagine the show without her.
Here's a question. I've never seen the infamous "I choose me" episode. But I know it's a big topic amongst 90210 fans. The one thing everyone seemed to agree on was that it was a big letdown. What say you?
And how long was it until she began dating again?
I must be the only 90210 fan in history to not have a preference for Kelly re Dylan or Brandon. But that's just because I always wanted Dylan to end up with Brenda. :D

Yeah. Kelly was the lead actress for most of 90210`s run. I really couldn't imagine the show without her.
Brandon left at the beginning of the 9th season....Dylan came back 2 episodes after Brandon left (that shows just how important Brandon was to the show, that they immediately had to bring Luke Perry back).
*I CHOOSE ME!* LOL.....Yes, that is a standout episode. I guess it was a letdown to many fans because there were teams (Kelly/Brandon & Kelly/Dylan), waiting to finally find out who she would choose, and then....she didn't! She told them she`ll love them both until the day she dies, and walked away (after her famous line, or course).....I wasn't THAT upset about it though. I knew the day would come, where she would finally make the choice. Good things come to those who wait...As the series continues, she tells Brandon that she`s finally chosen (him), then they move in together.
Later on, she starts dating Matt (for about a year), but things get shaky once Dylan comes back to town...The series finale has Matt telling her he knows what's going on, and that he just wants her to be happy. Her and Dylan are together, once again.
Dylan and Brenda were good, but I thought Kelly and Brandon were great!
Sophie Treadmill 07-24-2007, 11:20 PM Thanks for that recap! Now I want to see that episode.
One Kelly and Brandon episode that stands out for me was when she gave back the ring. Brandon was so heartbroken. I didn't think I was particularly invested in their 'ship one way or another, but I really liked that episode and felt for Brandon on that one. Jennie Garth was great on this one too.

Jennie Garth was one of the best, if not, the best actress on the show....I remember the episode your talking about. And your right, that was a great scene (with the ring). Jennie and Jason did great jobs doing that scene.
I always thought Kelly and Brandon were a good couple.

I know what he meant. I just thought it might be rude to correct him...With that said, I edited my own post.
And I guess COLIN wasn't that bad. Thinking back on it, I didn't think he was "awful" (as stated in my above post). He was just one of those characters I loved to hate...BTW, Jason Wiles is a really good actor.

yes, he did make Bosco very likeable... you know i kind of liked Colin, because he made kelly a drug addict which made others realize she wasn't the perfect princess she made everyone think she was. I just wish he didn't use Valiere so much...

donnamartin 10-07-2007, 11:22 PM I always wanted Dylan with Brenda too! The writes, producers, actors set them up so believeably that I could never see him with anyone else. Plus, he never shared any true chemistry with anyone but her. Dylan and Kelly never seemed like true soulmates in my opinion.

Brenda and Dylan probably were soulmates....But I didn't mind him with Kelly for a little while. Their whole "when Brenda is away, Dylan will play" storyline was great. I LOVED those summer episodes. It was fun to see things get shaken up, but in the end, I think we all wanted him with Brenda.
factsoflife 10-08-2007, 01:05 PM i just hate how they all tried to make Brenda the villian in the story and blamed her for cheating, when it was dylan that cheated first, with her best friend.

Now you know that most of us fans were not buying that "Brenda is the villan" crap. I hate that the Kelly/Dylan connection was being forced upon us. The chemistry between Brenda and Dylan was FANTASTIC! Kelly and Dylan were good but Brenda and Dylan were great!

I agree... as Brenda said "if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck"
donnamartin 10-10-2007, 09:10 PM I think you captured the reason I never liked Kelly. Writing her in as the lead and moving her in opposite Dylan did feel forced AND she always had something rude to say to Brenda to justify her ways. I did not like how the writers/producers turned her into the one we should like. Never happened for me.
I will say that I liked her with Matt, until she totally disrespected him too!

My favorite catty quote is:
Donna: Are you guys still fighting?
Kelly: We all have our crosses to bear.
Brenda: Or our legs to uncross. :D

and what i really don't like is that she went from class snob and literally overnight became the shows new "herione" and all of a sudden became this goody-two shoes who had something to say about everyone else; even her best friends like Donna... it just didn't feel natural, it felt forced.... and anyone that didn't like Kelly was automatically the villian of the show, for example, Valerie, who never hurt anybody on purpose got banned as the group witch with a b...
To be honest once Dylan slept with Kelly i couldn't stand him anymore... lost all respect for him because he just ditched Brenda like yesterday's stale bread and then had the nerve to blame her and her family; who were nothing but supportive of him.
ThomasE 10-10-2007, 11:27 PM I agree. If there is one thing that I do hate is forced driven storylines. There were just some things that I did not buy into at all.
donnamartin 10-11-2007, 11:51 AM Yeah FActsof Life, that was the turning point for me too with Dylan! I actually really liked him when he and Brenda were dating. He was a hot-he3ad, but decent, compassionate, and very charming. After they split, he always seemed angry, rude and insensitive toward everyone.
I guess really, the whole framework of the show changed after season 3. There were, of course, enough good storylines and likeable characters beyond the Kelly/Dylan roles that kept me interested through the end.

i actually gave up watching the show around the 1998-1999 season because Dawson's Creek was moved to Wed nights; but i've since seen all the episodes in syndication...
littlebelle 12-31-2007, 07:11 PM I hated her when she was mean to Brenda... and I hated freakin Dylan and her both when they hooked up!! How could they do that to Brenda??

I agree and i don't get why so many people are like "brenda was mean to kelly"... when it was KELLY, NOT Brenda that slept with her best friends boyfriend and LIED ABOUT IT for MONTHS!
Mr. Television 12-31-2007, 10:08 PM Kelly just sucked. I didn't like her paired with Brandon either.
littlebelle 12-31-2007, 10:26 PM I mean, obviously she had issues (her mom was crazy) but that's no excuse to treat everyone like crap and sleep around with all the guys!

i agree. because by that point she had become such a self-rightoues witch that nobody could possibly live up to her "moral" standards... and she always treated him like crap.
