Yep folks I got the Season 2 of Gimme A Break on DVD from Amazon Canada. I got mad when I heard it was delayed and I tried to cancel it but amazon canada said it was shipped and on the way. Order it off Amazon Canada.

You can tell the episodes are old, some of the sound is okay but it gets better

You're the first one to post you have received it. So it really is out there then!? :D How is the overall quality? You mentioned it looks old. Is it as good as Season One? Are you singing "I've got a golden ticket!" LOL!!!:D

There you go.. as I've been saying all along, Amazon DID have copies of the product, and have been sending them out.

I will wait for mine to arrive.

I'm curious...everyone who got an email from amazon.ca saying it shipped, are you in the US? I wonder if it's only shipping to the US. That may be why it shipped early. I knew they had the product all along and probably are disregarding VEI's request for them not to ship. I mean really, look at it this way...it was listed as amazon.ca top sellers. They had the product ready to go and then at the last minute were told it's been delayed? I don't think they'd be happy about it. Or maybe it was a miscommunication afterall. Who knows.
Now, the real question for anyone who actully received the set already. Are there any syndicated episodes or a music replacement dislcaimer or anything? I don't know when I'll be getting my set but hopefully sometime this week.

Richee

I think brotharollins might be in Canada, because they got the DVD rather quickly.

The rest of us.. as far as I know, are all from the United States.

It should still be available new. I'm pretty sure that's what the "usually ships in 3 to 5 days means". I'd order it right away if I were you cuase who knows what the deal really is with the delay. If there really is a delay amazon.ca might stop taking orders any time.

I should be getting my S2 set soon as well, since the tracking website said that it left Canada yesterday.

I just hope nobody decides to contact VEI and tell them what's going on. They might contact Amazon and tell them to stop shipping.

So, let's keep this on the DL. ;)

Since it left Canada, maybe it is somewhere in the US and it should be coming either this weekend or sometime next week.

Did your DVD ship off before the error was caught?

TJ
10-06-2006, 12:37 AM
There's no point in cancelling your order even if they haven't sent it yet. If you had ordered it before they changed the date, you still might get it. Who knows. If your order hasn't been processed and it hasn't left Canada, it seems less likely at this point. They won't charge you until it ships.

It doesn't have any specific information, so maybe not. I'll get the set one way or another hopefully.

It says they are preparing the order, so it can't be cancelled.

Robert 13
10-06-2006, 10:52 AM
I know. It is a strange situation. Something must have happened legally (just a guess) that has stalled the release. It is possible that there are issues with the copyright which prevent sales prior to January 16th. The copies that have already been shipped must be an error in communication between amazon.ca and VEI. We're still waiting for someone to receive a copy and give a full rundown of the set.

I got mine too and I love it!!! The packaging is very nice. The colors they used work great. And the bonus features are a big plus. Here's hoping Season 3 is released in early 2007!

I popped it in really quick to see how the quality is and it seems great. It also seems like these episodes are uncut so it looks like VEI did a great job with this set aside from the release date fiasco. Either way, we're lucky to have this set early. Enjoy your sets everyone! :)

I think that if VEI release season 3 I'll pre-order early just like I did this time around, because you never know what will happen.

It beats me. It must either have something to with copyright as I posted previously or maybe some contractual obligation with Universal where they intend to release the set around the same time in the U.S. Either way, I'm also happy with what we got. I don't think Universal could improve on the cover-art either. I like how they used different pics on the back of each case to match the episodes on that disc. Nice job VEI! I hope they continue with the series until they have released all 6 seasons. The bonus episodes are a nice touch. We should definitely e-mail VEI after the official release date to let them know how happy we are that they are releasing the show on dvd. :)

I am glad I received it as well.

I think the picture quality is a little less than the previous season set (Universal's set). I haven't yet purchased the season 1 set from VEI yet.. but I do know the first season seemed to be a little better, not much, in quality.

There could be a couple of reasons why the second season was pushed back.. one could be that they found a more clear copy of the episodes. The quality isn't real bad.. but just a tad less than the first season, in my opinion.

Another reason could be that Universal plans to release season 2 as well, but wants to be the first to release it, in fear that everybody will buy from VEI first, leaving Universal with lack of sales.

Yet another reason could be something to do with the menus or structure... or some kind of error I have not come across yet. Could be a repeat of an episode, or episodes out of order? I haven't found any problems myself, so who knows.

Or the final reason, could be something to do with the Extras. Maybe they've decided NOT to release a 3rd season of GImme A Break, so they want to replace that extra episode with something else they plan to release. Or maybe they wish to remove the Kate & Allie episode for some reason or another.

I guess we'll have to wait awhile to learn what their reason for postponed release date is. Until that time, those of us who were lucky enough to receive this DVD set, can enjoy them and hope the rest of you receive your copy soon.

I'm soooo happy. I got mine today too. I briefly ran through the episodes to check the run times. All are between 24-25 minutes, so apparently no syndicated cuts. Whew! There is no mention of any music replacement either. The quality seems decent, although some episodes the sound seems lower than on others. I had no idea there was the bonus episode "Joey Part I" from season 3. That episode also runs 24:57 minutes and includes the season 3 theme song. Also there is an episode of Kate & Allie season 3 "The Reunion" which runs 24:27 minutes. I'm thinking the only possible reason for the delay is that Universal plans to release this set in the US and somehow managed to get VEI to postpone it. Thank God amazon.ca shipped a select few copies to a select few lucky people! I'm pleased with VEI's release from what I've seen so far. If Universal releases season 2 I have no intention of buying it unless there's some extras. Universal is not known for doing good jobs with their releases.

It does appear that VEI will continue to release future sets of not only Gimme a Break, but Kate & Allie as well. Thanks VEI, at least we can depend on them for this show because with Universal it's anyone's guess if and when their next release will be.

TVJunkie101

I'm betting Universal wants to release S2 so that's why VEI was asked to push it back and I guess they did but thank god I got my copy! LOL. I'm so happy. So glad I pre-ordered it!

Richee
10-06-2006, 09:44 PM
What was odd is I pre-ordered mine at the last minute.. (Sept 29th) and was one of the first to receive it in the mail. I will probably buy both versions (Universal and VEI) of the series, just incase one of them decides to release the entire series, while the other might decide to drop it. I have a feeling that VEI will continue to release all 6 seasons, and Universal will decide to drop out sometime in the race.

TV_Fan
10-06-2006, 10:21 PM
I'd definitely put my money with VEI. To be honest I would have not even considered buying VEI's set if Universal released theirs first. I live in the US and it is much more convienent buying it direct from Best Buy or what not. If this is Universal's doing they really know how to screw themselves. They started with only releasing the first season of Kate & Allie while VEI released both seasons for almost the same price. If Universal continues with Gimme a Break you can almost guarantee there will be some music replacement somewhere. VEI on the other hand is known for including original music. This is the first set I've gotten from VEI and I'm happy with the job they've done, even though there are no extras (aside from bonus eps which I'm glad are there anyway). I think they're pretty limited in what extras they could produce being a smaller company than Universal.

For anyone who is on the fence about buying season 2 from whoever or even getting started with season one, take my advice and get these sets. So far I've watched 5 episodes, most of which I haven't seen in years, and they all still hold up. I was hysterical laughing. This is not an outdated show. It's both funny and serious which is what makes it so great. I love this show. I'm glad I was one of the lucky ones who got my set.

TJ
10-06-2006, 11:12 PM
I got a shipping notice just now, so I guess I got my order on the 4th in on time.

As far as any differences between the US and Canadian S1 releases, I didn't notice anything major. The episodes looked practically the same to me. There was only a 1-2 second difference in the running times. I'm pretty sure that Universal and VEI were provided with the same masters.

I am expecting that we'll see Universal release S2 in January or February and that was part of the reason for VEI delaying it.

Richee

TJ
10-06-2006, 11:24 PM
I don't think I will review it until it is officially released. I just didn't want to wait 3 months to get it and not be part of the excitement.

I wonder how many people really ordered this set. I only had 10 orders (7 that have shipped) on 261 clicks. I guess a lot of people just went through amazon.ca ... oh well. I bet only the die-hards ordered it from Canada.

Richee
10-07-2006, 12:05 AM
At least give us your unofficial opinion about the DVD when you recieve it.

If the product gets shipped back to VEI, we may have a rare copy of the DVD. If they just planned to hold back on it's release, and change nothing.. then we've only got an advance copy.

Either way, i'm happy with it.

Yes, Canada has the same DVD Region as America, which is 1. Also, some Canada DVD's will have a Region 0-which will play on all DVD players around the world. Gimme A Break S2 is Region 1.

I wonder if Universal does plan to release Season 2. I hope that's not the reason for VEI's delay. Otherwise, we'll have to wait until Universal decides to release Season 3 which could be a year from the release of Season 2. What made VEI's release so exciting was how quick Season 2 followed the first season release. I hope Season 3 comes in early Spring. The pre-order sales for Season 2 were pretty good from what I saw on amazon.ca.

On a side note, has anybody watched "Sam's Imaginary Friend" yet. That episode is hysterical. I love when Grandpa says "Why don't you go try and calm her down, Debbie Jo?" Also "Katie Steals Julie's Jock" is really funny. :D

I watched "Sam's Imaginary Friend" the other night.

But Last night I watched "Love thy Neighbor" that episode cracks me up. Especially when Nell calls up Mrs. Falconberg in the middle of the night and and blows a whistle into the phone, then the Chief burst through Nells bedroom door while holding his gun   That cracks me up everytime I see it.

Richee
10-10-2006, 04:04 PM
I agree Chuck!

I did notice a bit of lower picture quality in some of the episodes, than the entire first season DVD set.. and some lower quality of audio on only one or two episodes! It's no big deal, and not noticed on a regular television set, or for those who aren't comparing the quality of both sets..

I know that with age, we can't accept 100% quality.. but these are very close, and a lot better than some of the shows aired around the same period!

I would even deal with poor quality video and audio, than to deal with edited epsiodes! Like with the ALF DVD set.. the episodes are all edited down by 3 minutes or more per episode. The company's excuse is that the unedited episodes are poor in quality, so they've used the edited syndicated versions instead. I would have rather had the unedited ones, even if it meant poor quality.

Thank goodness that Gimme A Break is here unedited, and that the tapes have kept most of it's quality all these years! ....and Thanks to Universal AND VEI for releasing these to DVD.. even though Universal is very slow with their release dates! :D

I also would rather have the unedited episodes,no matter what quality they are in. As I did a quick scan through all 3 discs,I also noticed the low sound on one episode and the color was a little grainy in some of the episodes, but the quality was pretty good for being over 23-24 years old.
Those of us who pre-ordered early are very lucky to have this set in our hands!

When I read about the delay here,I didn't think that Amazon.ca would ship anything so it was a nice surprise.

Me too I would rather have crappy picture quality than edited episodes. As long as I could see the picture and hear what they're saying, I'm fine.

Yeah I wonder what their excuse will be. Now I can't wait until Jan to see if the DVD will be any different.

The episode menu screens look a bit different than what they do on the second set I received, I wonder if they changed them?

For anybody who got their set in October, do they have the episode titles super-imposed on the episode menu screens? There are red arrows on either side of the menu that lead you to the next screen. They still have the still images in picture frames like the screen shots that were posted.

I don't know what the reason was for the delay. It's possible they could have looked for better masters, but I noticed the same problems with some grainy pictures and low audio for a couple of episodes.

All 3 episode sub-menus list disc 3 on them.

Also, my disc 1 says disc 1 and not disc 3 as somebody else mentioned on another thread.. so perhaps they delayed it to fix the menus.

Yes,the episode titles are on the episode menu screens in yellow lettering, which turns blue when you highlight it.
There are also red arrows as well.
When you click on the episode you select, all the titles will disappear and then the episode will come on. Have you had a chance to check the episode runtimes? Do they match the runtimes of the set some of us received in October?

The runtimes are the same. I just don't know how those screenshots were taken without the episode titles being visible. I guess they just have very quick fingers to take a snapshot during that very short time.

ThomasE,
You will be very pleased with your copy. Hopefully season 3 will come out soon. VEI did a good job with this set. I really liked the packaging much better than Universal's S1 set.

OT:Julia Barr.......
Nice tribute to Julia Barr. It was ridiculous what AMC did to her after 30 years of playing Brooke. After 25 years, I no longer watch the garbage of a show that AMC has turned into. Have you noticed the way the show has been looking since late summer? Shaky handheld cameras and the fake film look.
AMC is still shot on videotape like the other soaps, but in post production they edit out every other frame to give it a distorted fake film look.
It looks terrible,IMO. I hope Julia finds work on another soap where her talents are appreciated.

Thanks Chuck on both counts. I am looking foward to the set because I love Nell Carter and love this show. I hope that the entire season gets the release.

Other Note:
Julia Barr could have gone to recurring but she opted not to because she wanted a contract on AMC. I really don't blame her.

So the sets are the same? I wonder what was behind the delay. Maybe some legal formality regarding release date or something. That worries me though. Will there be a long wait for Season 3? The reason fans have made the sales so well for Season 2 in October was the quick turnaround. It would benefit them to follow-up on their season sets with short waiting periods. The wait between the first set of Kate & Allie and the third season has been a bit too long as well but I think VEI seems like a smaller company. Maybe they are not able to release sets quicker. Does anyone have any info close to the source? VEI has been my favorite company so far for their choice of shows to release.

By the way, does it seem like a good bet that Universal has given up on GAB?

I got my DVD in October and here are some snapshots of the menu from Disc 2.....THE TITLE OF THE EPISODES DOES SHOW UP ON MY DVD PLAYER, BUT WITH THE MEDIA PLAYER THAT I USE FOR SNAPSHOTS AND TO VIEW DVD'S THE TITLE ONLY APPEARS WHEN MY MOUSE IS OVER THE PITURE. BUT ON MY HOME DVD PLAYER THE TITLE OF THE EPISODES ARE ON THE PICTURE.

Season 1 is still "out of stock". Season 2 says "ships in 2 to 4 days". Did VEI not anticipate that this release would sell so well? I wonder what overall sales have been for both sets. I want to see Season 3 released in the next couple of months. It seems like Season 2 has already been available since most of us got it during it's initial release date. I hope whatever the problem was that they get the next release on track so that it goes smoothly without delays or release problems. The sets themselves are excellent. Uncut episodes with great package artwork. :)

Here is a few more pictures from the S2 DVD menus, including one from the S3 bonus episode.
I am using the VLC media player to capture the photos and it also takes out the episode titles and arrows.

Hey All,
As of right now, GAB Season 2 is now in stock at amazon.ca! The cost is roughly $28, which leads me to believe that they simply ran out of stock and needed to replenish; and it had nothing to do with the status or any other legal issue regarding the show. As for the rankings, it is now at #580. Hopefully, we will see Season 3 released very soon!!! I'm hoping that Season 3 will be released this Spring!

As of this writing, GAB Season 2 is ranked #43 in sales rankings on amazon.ca! This should be great news to the people at VEI. The price for the set went back down to $25. This news definately raises my hopes for an imminent release of Season 3! I also hope that we get some bonus features regarding the show in addition to the bonus episodes for the following season! I believe that having additional bonus features, such as bloopers, promos, interviews, etc. will really boost sales for these sets!

If they listed Season 3 as a pre-order with coverart, I would order it immediately. :)

That's great news! This was definitely a big seller for VEI. Let's all e-mail VEI too to let them know how much we want the entire series released on dvd. Their e-mail address is info@visualentertainment.tv. :typing:

I have a silly question. If you order the dvd on amazon Canada, can you watch the DVD in the US? Are the compatible with US DVD players? I love this show and would love to buy but not sure if it work. Thanks! :)

I really wish VEI would bump up the release of Season 3 and make an announcement with coverart. The end of the year seems like a long time to wait for the next set.

Me too! My hope is that we will only have to wait until late summer or fall for Season 3. I know that the end of the year seems like a long time to wait for the next set, because we would like to have these sets right now (if we had our way). However, these days seem to be flying by so fast (at least for me, anyway). I mean, tomorrow is my 29th birthday, and it seems like yesterday, that it was January, and it's already early April! So, the end of the year is really not that far off; but I will agree that it definately seems like a long time to wait. Hopefully, we won't have to wait that long for the set. I hope the reasoning behind it is that they are adding some additional bonus features from GAB, besides the bonus episode from Season 4, and/or they do not want to make the same mistakes with the Season 3 set that they did with the Season 2 set. Either way, I'm sure it will be well worth the wait.:)

Happy Pre-Birthday kanisky7896! :)

I hope they add some great special features too. It's always nice to see the bonus episode as sort of a preview of the next set. I hope they put "Whodunnit?" on the 3rd season set or "Nell's Birthday".

Thanks, Robert 13! For awahile I was thinking that they would put in either "Carl's Delicate Moment" or "Whodunnit?", but "Nell's Birthday" or even "Breakdance" would work for bonus episodes as well.
