Broadway, film and TV actor Herbert Rudley died Sept. 9 in Los Angeles. He was 96.
He played Eve Arden's husband on The Mothers-in-Law. Many other sitcom appearances, including The Beverly Hillbillies and My Favorite Martian.

I know he was in the running for the part of Mr. Drysdale on "The Beverly Hillbillies" but the part went to Raymond Bailey.

That's interesting, since he appeared as Psychatrist, Dr. Twombly in the first season of BH.

...as "authority figures" in most of his movies and TV appearances [he was an Air Force general in the "MY FAVORITE MARTIAN" pilot, and a crooked senator in one of the last "I DREAM OF JEANNIE" episodes]. Only Desi Arnaz knew he was also a good "straight man" by casting him in "THE MOTHERS-IN-LAW".
