View Full Version : Does this make me a selfish person?

My mom hit the lottery for $500 yesterday and I just said I really don;t need to know because it's not really doing anything for me. Now I told her if she had hit the lottery for $10 million, then I would not mind hearing but to hear her say she hit for $500 and she couldn;t offer to treat me to dinner like I treated her last week just makes really not want to hear anything about it. So is there anything selfish about this?

BTW: I treated on a week where i had little money and couldn;t get the same thing in return after her hitting the lottery a week later. Now if she had hit the Lottery in October I wouldn;t need to be treated but since it was just last week I figured she would offer she I just treated her 6 days ago.

Even with the lottery win, maybe she can't afford to treat.

Solomon, be happy for your mother that she hit the lottery. This is your mother we're talking about.

I think it's being a little selfish. I mean, she was happy she won something! There are some people who never win anything, and that's one thing they want to do. My grandma and Mom get happy when they hit $11.00 on the lottery and I always say "good job!" It's just common courtesy. :)

Janice i understand but I was just so surprised that she didn;t offer to treat me to Dinner this week since she hit for $500-lol And i was talking about a red lobster dinner not some expensive dinner. So that's why I didn;t feel the need to hear her go on and on about what she plannned to do with the money.

But if i knew she was waiting on her next pay and had little money and i hit the lottery for $500, I wouldn't even tell her about her about it because of her financial situation.

I think it might have been better if you hadn't told her you weren't interested. As Jo said, it's something she was happy about. Any money is better than no money at all.

As for her not offering to buy you dinner - maybe she will sometime. Maybe she was so caught up in the excitement of winning that she wasn't thinking about anything else.

Yes that was deffinately selfish, my mom won $25 once at a raffle and was extremely excited. Because it was the first time she had won anything, and it wasn't like she needed the money but still it's always exciting to win something.

Solomon, no offense man, but you need to get your priorities straight. You don't call your mother during the Jeffersons marathon, and now this? $500 is not a small sum of money to most people. Be happy for your mom dude. Solomon, you're 30 somethin right? Your mom is alive and healthy. Be happy for that. I have friends my age who have lost their mother, father, or both. I'm not trying to attack you but seriously man, grow up.

Regardless of the amount, I guess she was just happy she won something at all. It's very hard to win ANYTHING when your dealing with the lotto.

I thought that when you treat someone to dinner you do it without expecting something in return. It was pretty selfish. Like I tell my 9 year old son Sometimes it is best to keep your thoughts to yourself....

It still would have been nice to offer since she was telling me about the money. Like I said if this was 11/21 instead of 9/21 then that would have been different. And plus this is like the 5th time she hit for $500 in the last 3 years. So it's not like this was something she never won before

Your mother took care of you, clothed you, fed you for 18 years. One dinner where you treat her is really nothing considering all the time and money she spent on you. When I first started out, I always expected my parents to keep giving me money, but now that I make a good income, I never take any money from them because I know how much they've already spent on me over the years. I'd be happy for your mom for winning some money rather to be spiteful because she won't get you something with it.

Extremely selfish Solomon. Your mother gave birth to you, raised you, put you through school, you should worship the ground she walks on.

Homie Your mom gave you life and she fed u all your life and your saying she should treat you to dinnner because you treated you? If you hit the 10 million $ lotery thats not even close to paying your mom back for all those things shes done for you. Cut her some slack. I ain't trying to be mean or anything its the truth.

She called you because she was happy that she won and wanted to share the news with her son. It's really sad thats how you think. You should be happy for her, not thinking whats in it for me. You do that when you're a teenager, not in your 30's.

But she always hits for $500 so it was nothing new. That was like her 6th time hitting the lottery for $500 in the last 8 years. So It wasn't a First Time thing. If it was then I would have reacted differently. So let's say if she hits for another $500 next friday, do I need to hear it again? And then she hits the friday after that, I stiill need to hear it?

I'm sure I speak for every person who has lost their mother when I say, "we wish one more time we could hear their voice, scolding us, telling us whatever they want" but alas it will never be. Cherish the fact that you do have a mother who shares her happiness with you.

I can remember my kids coming home from school, squealing with delight everytime they got a good grade and you know what?, I never tired of hearing it. Good news can be repeated thousands of times and never get boring.

To say "that's great mom and wish you could win ten more times", costs nothing but would make her swell with pride. You made it your business to tell her not to call during the Jefferson's marathon, so spend that ime now and tell her your so glad for her.

What is it about your mom's winning the lottery that makes you feel that you'd rather NOT know about it? We understand that she's won several times over the years, but why don't you share in her happiness? Are you saying that if none of her winnings are spent on or given to you, you'd rather not know that she'd won? Frankly, that comes across as jealousy.

I'm not sure why everyone is giving Solomen a hard time about not wanting to talk to his mom during a Jeffersons' marathon. If I am watching something and a friend calls me, I tell them that I am doing something and that I will call them back when I am done watching whatever it is I am watching. Now if the call was an emergency, that would be different.

As far as Solomen's mother calling him after she won the lottery? Well, if she has won in the past, I don't see why she would really need to call him to tell him that she has won again. Lilhave compared Solomen's mother winning to his children brining home good grades. I really don't see them as being at all the same. If I had children, I would always be happy to hear that they were recieving good grades. Good grades are important after all. However, if my mother won the lottery for like the fifth time, I'm not really sure I would need to know about it.

I shut my phones off when I'm watching movies or tv shows that I love. I think Solomon could have picked up the phone during the Jefferson marathon and tell her he'll talk to her on Monday. Mothers know their kids, and I'm sure Solomon's mother knows him and his behavior when shows that he love are on.

I don't think Solomon is owed anything by his mother's lottery win. Yet, he's not a monster for having a gripe about his mother. Most everyone I know, members here - they complain about their parents all the time.

Years ago, I used to go to bingo with my mother. I hit for $500 once, and I gave my mother $50. Months later, she hit for $500 and gave me nothing. I bitched about it to my husband. Big deal.

If Solomon is living from paycheck to paycheck, I can see why his feelings would be hurt hearing about his mother's win. It doesn't make him a monster. He's taken her out for dinner, and has said nice things about her in the past.

This is coming from someone whose parents are deceased. My heart aches for them every day of my life. It doesn't mean they didn't piss me off at times, and vice versa.
