View Full Version : What were you all doing when you heard that John Ritter had DIED?!?!?
Big3sCompanyFan 09-11-2006, 02:15 PM It still seems so shocking. It's amazing it's been so long. 3 years ago today. I remember I was up late on September 11th sitting in the dark and I was listening to the Art Bell show and Geroge Noory said, "This just out of Hollywood. John Ritter has DIED."
I first thought he meant someone else since I just did not believe it. I thought maybe he made a mistake and meant some other John. But as I heard the national news at the top of the hour and checked the internet I was shocked to find out it was true. :(
What were you all doing?
JRfan 09-11-2006, 04:10 PM I was in my 7th grade English class and my teacher had said it. I didn't think I heard her right so I asked her again. That was a terrible day. I cried so much that day that one of the teachers sent me to a guidance councelor and they looked at me in shock when I told them what was wrong.
TV DVD Fan 09-11-2006, 04:43 PM What a horrible day. Ironically enough, on September 11th, 2001, I was coming down the stairs from my bedroom when my mother broke the news to me that a neigbor died, and in the same exact position exactly 2 years later (and around the same time too) when she told me that John had died. :(
Luckily, my brother who was not far at all from the Trade Center (he went to Stuyvesant) and a couple of aunts who worked in the general area all escaped and my parents, other siblings, and other family members were not near the site at all.
We shall never forget both the passing of John Ritter and the destruction of a national treasure that lives on in our hearts.
BensonFan 09-11-2006, 08:14 PM Quite simply, I saw it when I logged onto the internet the morning of 9/12/03. There was a picture of Johnny Cash and a mention of his death--below it was a blurb about John and I couldn't believe my eyes.
So sad. :(
I Love John Ritter 09-12-2006, 02:10 AM I didn't find out until the next day, September 12th. My brother heard it on the radio before I did and told me about it. I really thought he was just joking at first, but I finally figured out it was true and was just in shock. It was so unexpected.
Miss you, John.
BuffaloBill 09-13-2006, 02:32 AM Unfortunately when you have kids running and screaming around its hard to catch everything. while listening to the moring news after 6am...I could the end of a story..all I heard was ...the former TC star would have turned 55 later this week. Well even though I only caught the tail end. I put 2 and 2 together. I turned CNN on asap, seen the top story Johnny Cash had died , and thought maybe it was Cash they were talking about. But I knew I was fooling myself , I know what I heard, and a few minutes later on the scrolls..there it was. Its funny I hadnt watched TC in months , and something told me that night you need to watch it on N at N. :(
comedyfreak 09-13-2006, 04:13 AM I found that night while watching the news and I admit to balling when they did the tribute to him, as well as when they interviewed the cast.
Pitooey 09-13-2006, 09:59 AM I could never forget this..... I woke up that morning and put the TV news on when I heard it. My heart sank cause I couldn't believe he was gone. I felt depressed all day. :(
Chuck89 09-13-2006, 07:56 PM I heard it on the Nick Digilio show on WGN radio in Chicago. I remember that Nick seemed very shocked by the news,as we all were that night.
Adamantium 09-13-2006, 10:19 PM I woke up in the morning to get ready for work. As soon as I stepped outside my room to head for the bathroom, my dad told me. I was shocked. As I was getting ready for work, I was shaking. It was so freaky, I couldn't believe it. I held back the tears. Once I got to work, I told my friend who I usually discuss TV with and he was shocked also. He told someone else and they were shocked. It was just so shocking. If they had said "Guess who died", John Ritter certainly wouldn't have been top on your list of names to guess.
And then once I heard that 8 Simple Rules would continue without him, I felt really sad just thinking about how Paul Hennessey was going to die.
Adamantium 09-13-2006, 10:25 PM I first thought he meant someone else since I just did not believe it. I thought maybe he made a mistake and meant some other John.
In 1998, when my sister told me that Phil Hartman was died, I told myself it couldn't be THE Phil Hartman. It's funny how our minds will do that. I've heard that Denial is one of the steps of dealing with grief. I never thought about it, but I guess that was denial, even if it was a split second.
queenFrostine278 09-16-2006, 12:49 PM it was one of my first days of ninth grade. i was sitting in my theology class and the nuns like intentions please and some girls prayed for him. it was very surreal.
Bundy 09-16-2006, 02:08 PM I found out the next morning when I turned on the news and it was on the ticker.
PrettyinPink55 09-16-2006, 09:28 PM I'll never forget it.
I was driving to school and heard it on the radio. I was just in shock. I felt so sick! It felt like somebody had punched me right in the stomach and knocked the wind out. The rest of the day, I couldn't think about anything else, and that sick feeling in my stomach just remained. I kept thinking....Why? Why John??? You left us too soon, John! Sometimes I forget he's no longer with us!! When I see him on Three's Company as Jack Tripper, it's just so hard to picture it.
Mr. Television 09-16-2006, 09:48 PM I heard it on the news that morning. I tell you being on SO that day was surreal. Just about everybody had John Ritter avatars and their was thread after thread dedicated to him. Their wasn't no fights on any of the boards that day. Just a lot of sadness.
JackTripper258 09-17-2006, 09:15 PM Well, I heard about it as soon as I got up. My dad said 'Got bad news' and I said 'Okay' and he said 'Johnny Cash died' and I was a fan of Johnny Cash but not even NEARLY as close as John Ritter so I just said 'Oh, okay' and he said 'There's more, John Ritter died too' all I could do was say 'Oh' and walk away. I cried all morning till I got ready to go to school. I walked in that day and in bus room everyone was just so quiet. I actually turned on one of my best friends that day b/c she asked me what was wrong and I said 'NOTHING! Just leave me alone okay?!' cause that's all people had been asking me.
It was a terrible morning. I'm just now getting over it, probably just like the rest of you also.
Chain Gang Member 09-18-2006, 08:44 AM I first heard it on the radio and thought I was hearing things but I found out he died when my chemistry teacher said he did
I remember I got home from school on September 12 and the first thing I did was turn on the TV to catch the last 20 minutes of Guiding Light. I also logged onto SO and saw a thread on the General Sitcoms Discussion board titled "JOHN RITTER HAS DIED..." Of course, I thought it was some kind of a sick joke, but as soon as I clicked the thread, the CBS newsbreak that appears after Guiding Light came on the TV and confirmed the information.
WalrusIsPaul 09-21-2006, 06:25 PM !st read it on line when i turned the pc on,,i believe it read something like tv star John Ritter dies. Hard to beleive when i saw it.
80s_Fan 09-21-2006, 06:48 PM My boyfriend and I were living in our apartment at the time and I had woken up and went to see him in the bedroom; and he was listening to the radio when an announcement came on that (John Ritter) had died. We were both shocked and couldn't believe it. To this day, I miss him and so sad that he's gone but he will always be in my thoughts and prayers not to mention in my heart too. He was a wonderful actor.
Gone But Not Forgotten :rip: :jack
KissMyGrits 09-21-2006, 07:57 PM My husband, son and I were at Disney. We stopped at a hotel restaurant and they announced it on the tv. I was like "Oh, that's sad." Then we thought about the terrorist attacks and how many people died on that day. The month was definitely sad....
Already Gone 09-23-2006, 08:04 PM I thought it was really sad when I heard about it, I was at home. However, it does not even come close to the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Thousands of lives were lost that day.
treky 09-23-2006, 11:01 PM I was on the way over to my parents house with my brother; and he turned to me and said "Did you hear John Ritter died"?
We had the radio on and just then the news came on and they said it, then I remember they had an interview with Suzanne Sommers; and she was saying how she was set to guest on an episode of 8 SIMPLE RULES and she was just talking with him on the phone about it the day before and she was shocked when she heard the news.
friendsfan77 10-05-2006, 12:58 AM I had just gotten home from school and heard it on the local and then national evening news as well. It was a very sad day.
jehobden 10-05-2006, 01:19 AM I was driving into work on Sept. 12 and heard about Johnny Cash's death, which I'd expected, first. Then I heard about John Ritter, and it felt a bit like a kick in the heart, mostly since I hadn't expected someone so relatively young, at least on tv, to die so unexpectedly.
MikeLutton 10-05-2006, 02:11 AM i was surfing net saw it on classic tv index i was shocked i was also at home cant tell how upset iwas
sunshinefizzy 10-05-2006, 08:57 AM I heard it from this girl in my art class and I went home and I'm like 'mom can you believe John Ritter died?' She couldn't believe it either. I think I felt guilt because I was never a fan of TC or 8SR. Then I started to watch it after he died and I felt so mad at myself for not realizing the talent this incredible man had.:(
passionsfan79 10-05-2006, 09:31 PM I was browsing through internet and I was at Yahoo's home page. And I saw it there and was shocked. Still can't beleive hes gone. I still watch 3s company on Tvland here and there once in awhile.
Ohio8 03-05-2008, 06:49 PM I was watching CNN when I heard, then I went to other TV news channels to confirm the news.
Carrie 03-06-2008, 11:52 AM I heard it on the radio while I was driving my husband to drop his car off at the garage to get an oil change. I was so shocked! :(
vtunie 03-06-2008, 04:45 PM I really can't remember.
But it really hit me when CBC started running one episode of Three's Company after another that evening.
treky 03-06-2008, 05:23 PM I was driving over to my parents for our weekly Sunday night dinner when I heard it on the radio.
tiff7 03-06-2008, 06:48 PM I was driving into work on Sept. 12 and heard about Johnny Cash's death, which I'd expected, first. Then I heard about John Ritter, and it felt a bit like a kick in the heart, mostly since I hadn't expected someone so relatively young, at least on tv, to die so unexpectedly.I feel the same way!

catlover79 04-12-2008, 10:13 AM I was getting ready for work and had the TV on. There was a preview of the noon news and the reporter said, "Remembering actor John Ritter". I was just stunned.
Loopie63 06-16-2008, 07:29 PM I can't remember. But I do remember being shocked. It was so unexpected.:(
unholyinferno 06-17-2008, 02:15 AM On Friday morning, September 12, 2003 I was surfing the net. My cousin called me and asked if I heard that John died. I said no. I looked on Pavan's message board, and I couldn't believe it. I watched the TV Land tribute to John that weekend. Frankly I'm still stunned.
We love you, and miss you John. You were the best.
