View Full Version : Any problems behind the scenes?
Janice 09-03-2006, 11:00 PM Any contract disputes, walkouts...did the actors get along? Did any of the actors miss any shows due to problems? The show was on the air, for 11 seasons...I think. That's a long time. I never heard any bad press, aside from Mike Evans leaving.
Brian Damage 09-04-2006, 11:30 AM I think Mike Evans leaving and the death of Zara Cully were the two major problems of the show. I could be wrong though.
GARFIELDKOOL 09-04-2006, 12:39 PM I remember this intreview Franklin Cover had a few years ago on this "TV Guide" Show. It showcased actors and actress telling stories behind the scenes of shows. Anyway, Franklin Cover talked about the Jeffersons, and he stated that the kids from Diff'rent Strokes were making more money than him and Roxie Roker.

The only real problem behind the scenes was after season 1 when Mike Evans went to Norman Lear and said-"How can get of this show?-LOL
71dude 09-04-2006, 10:42 PM There were rumors that Isabel and Marla didn't get along.

I agree. I mean, I "hear" a lot of stuff too, but I like to inquire with those who may know.

That's a crock. If anything, Marla supported Isabel more than anyone else. She (along with Ned Wertimer) were present when Isabel received her well-deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and they both spoke (and Marla sang badly) at Isabel's memorial service. Sherman wasn't present at either of those, which bothers me.

SHERMAN DIDN'T GO TO ISABEL'S FUNERAL!!!!?
I have no idea about the funeral. The memorial service was held a month or so after Isabel's funeral. It was open to the public, and that was where Marla mentioned in her speech that Sherman wasn't there [at the memorial service]. Isabel's funeral was private (which I didn't like- I really wish that her family would have let the world mourn the loss of Isabel together), but they were two separate events. Sherman also wasn't in attendance when Isabel got her star on the Walk of Fame.

Interesting
Janice 09-07-2006, 08:37 PM I wonder what's up with this. Did Sherman offer a public statement when Isabel died?

I don't know for certain. It is an odd situation. Some people can't deal with the stress of death so they decide not to participate in those types of events. I wish he had, though.
ethelmaepotter 09-15-2006, 04:51 PM I remember seeing an interview one time with Isabel Sanford where she stated that at first, she was mortified that Sherman Hemsley was cast to play her husband, George. She didn't think he was the right fit for her. I assume that they eventually got along. Frankly, I would be a bit uncomfortable playing husband and wife with someone who was either 20 years older or 20 years younger than me, too.
I live in Los Angeles and use to see Marla Gibbs at a health food store in West Hollywood a lot. Over a period of about three weeks, I saw here there maybe four or five times. She was always with some other woman, but she had a wierd way of looking at people. Sort of like a "don't-approach-me" look on her face. On one occasion, the guy working behind the counter fell all over himself when he realized who she was. He said something about it was a pleasure to meet her and she seemed very disinterested. I don't think I would ever "approach" her if I saw her out again.

Yeah Isabel stated that on The Truth behind Sitcoms on FOX

i remember seeing clips of the memorial serv on the Emerson College site, Isabel Sanford started a scholarship there. Anyway Marla did mention that she was surprised Sherman Hemsley was not there, and then she started singing. By the way Marla also has a jazz cd out, I think it was released in march or may of this year
USATVFAN 04-14-2007, 04:10 AM SHERMAN DIDN'T GO TO ISABEL'S FUNERAL!!!!?
i know this thread is old.
Sherman Hemsley was at Isabel Sanford funeral. Jean Stapleton didn't go to Carroll O'Connor funeral and they got along great.
if he wasn't at the a the Hollywood star walk of fame he could have been busy.
and if not at the memorial service he probably still couldn't deal with her death.
anyway if i remember Sherman did comment on Isabel death once on ET.
And Sherman And Isabel did get along Great if they didn't The Jeffersons would never have lasted 11 years.
lil_weezy 04-16-2007, 11:57 PM i do believe that he mourn...everyone doesn't mourn the same way....so just b/c he was absent during the time of her death we shouldn't try to make speculations on if they got alone or not....

I herd they all got along.
DJM77 05-05-2013, 01:29 PM Sherman didn't like the way the writers had George act sometimes. It got so he didn't like George always calling Tom "honkey."

It looked like the George character was always going to hate Tom based on the very beginning of the series
The only other thing I heard about this series was when they wanted to spin-off Marla Gibbs into that "Checking In" show that lasted 4 episodes. Thank God she had the foresight to return to the parent show and be paid for any episodes she missed (Not many actors/actresses did that when they were spun off on their own show and it bombed after a few episodes, ie. "Flo", "Grady", "the Ropers").
And then there was the shameful way they found out that the show was cancelled- By Newspaper. No network execs called them or let them know what was up. No final episode, no nothing. Just pulled the plug.

A final episode for a show that was only on the air for 4 weeks?

I think they're talking about The Jeffersons. I still don't buy that. I knew the show was ending by mid-season. The ratings told the story. Alice was in the same boat and decided to film a final episode. The Jeffersons should have done the same thing. I think the cast was in denial because they had cheated death once before.

Yet they became best friends in the '80s.

Yeah that maybe the only long running show without a finale
