View Full Version : Bob Schieffer signs off for the final time - 08/31/2006 AKA 09-01-2006, 07:41 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTOOdtMdpWs This is the man who should have had the anchor chair for 25 years, not Dan Rather. Steve M. 09-01-2006, 07:50 PM So wait, who anchored the news tonight? AKA 09-01-2006, 07:57 PM Russ Mitchell. Central Perk 09-01-2006, 08:01 PM I've always liked Bob Schieffer. He did a great job. Jrnygrl 09-01-2006, 08:11 PM I've always liked Bob Schieffer. He did a great job. Last of the great ones!!!!!!patriot: :clap theshark8777 09-01-2006, 08:31 PM I've always liked Bob Schieffer. He did a great job. I thought he did too. He even picked up the ratings a little. Tweety 09-01-2006, 10:24 PM I thought he did too. He even picked up the ratings a little. Not hard to do, after Rather. theshark8777 09-01-2006, 10:31 PM Yeah, yeah whatever. Chelsea 09-01-2006, 10:45 PM Bob did a wonderful job anchoring the news the past year and a half. Still, when he took the job we ALL knew it was transitory, and not a permanent, long-term thing. And since a couple of people brought it up, regarding Rather: People make errors ALL THE TIME. The difference is that in person, you make a mistake regarding someone, you apologise, and all is forgiven. In print journalism, you simply print a retraction and move on. Meanwhile, in broadcast journalism, you make one mistake and everyone comes down on you like an angry fist for the rest of your career and tries to tarnish all the great things you've accomplished. I have a significant amount of respect for Mr. Rather, and will continue to do so for a very long time to come. We all mistakes - he just made his against the wrong person, and now people are going to continue to rub it in his face for decades after he's gone, and that's a real shame. But, this thread isn't about Dan Rather, it's about Bob Schieffer. A man I think did a wonderful job under less than wonderful circumstances. But, this thread isn't about Dan Rather, it's about Bob Schieffer. A man I think did a wonderful job under less than wonderful circumstances. Rather never cut anyone a break or an inch of slack in his entire career, unless they had a (D) next to their name. He made his bed, let him lie in it in shame for the rest of his life. He got off easy with just his legacy destroyed. Forging military docs is a crime, then there's the little matter of a phony story to impact a presidential election. He may not have forged the docs himself, but he ran with the story, against the advice of CBS. He's the poster boy for what Bush hate can drive a person to do. But you're right, this thread is about Schieffer. Steve M. 09-02-2006, 10:08 AM Russ Mitchell. So, technically, Russ Mitchell succeeds Bob Schieffer for a day, than Katie Couric succeeds Russ Mitchell. Which makes Mitchell sort of like William Henry Harrison (President of the United States for only a month!). theshark8777 09-02-2006, 10:11 AM Well whos gonna be on Monday? Steve M. 09-02-2006, 10:14 AM Oh yeah, I forgot about Monday! Russ Mitchell? Or another anchor, like the rotating presidency of Argentina a few years back? :rotflmao: Jonathan 09-02-2006, 10:16 AM Well whos gonna be on Monday? Russ Mitchell. AKA 09-02-2006, 10:29 AM So, uh... what did everyone think of the clip itself? theshark8777 09-02-2006, 10:44 AM how long has it been since you seen someone wearing a monocle? That was a very nice send off, for a very humble guy. theshark8777 09-02-2006, 10:45 AM Russ Mitchell. Yep Russ Mitchell one more day. So it said Scheiffer was the 4th anchor of CBS news, with Cronkite and Rather so who was the other one? I would imagine the first one. AKA 09-02-2006, 11:01 AM Yep Russ Mitchell one more day. So it said Scheiffer was the 4th anchor of CBS news, with Cronkite and Rather so who was the other one? I would imagine the first one. Douglas Edwards. Tweety 09-02-2006, 11:21 AM Maybe on Monday CBS could run a "Best of the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather"... re-live the glory days when they thought he could swing a Presidential election by reporting a made-up story (which Rather STILL insists is true). Or just show Dan making some of his most memorable quotes: "Despite what many Americans think, most Soviets do not yearn for capitalism or Western-style democracy". "Folks, let me point out something to you, because for a lot of people in Washington, they could not be more surprised if Fidel Castro came loping through on the back of a hippopotamus this Election Night". (Dan's Election Night 'commentaries' were legendary). "I got addicted. News, particularly daily news, is more addictive than crack cocaine, more addictive than heroin, more addictive than cigarettes". (How would Dan know THAT, I wonder?) "I had someone at the Houston police station shoot me with heroin so I could do a story about it. The experience was a special kind of hell. I came out understanding full well how one could be addicted to 'smack,' and quickly". AND "I've tried everything. I can say to you with confidence, I know a fair amount about LSD. I've never been a social user of any of these things, but my curiosity has carried me into a lot of interesting areas". (Now we know) "I'm proud to say I've never been anybody's lapdog". (Other than the DNC's, that is) "I've always tried to be fair, even-handed, not an advocate for any group". (Guess he doesn't consider Democrats to be a 'group'). "Never eat spinach just before going on the air". "Texas: 32 electoral votes, another of the so-called big enchiladas or if not an enchilada at least a huge taco". "They say California's the big burrito; Texas is a big taco right now. We want to follow that through. Florida is a big tamale. " "The Michigan Republican primary apparently is tighter than Willie Nelson's headband". "The reelection of Bill Clinton is as secure as a double-knot tied in wet rawhide". "They may have turned this up, whether you had the Paula Jones case or not. But again maybe not, but again that's like if a frog had side pockets he'd probably wear a handgun". "This race between Dick Swett and Bob Smith is hot and tight as a too-small bathing suit on a too-long car ride back from the beach. " "This race is hotter than a Times Square Rolex." "Those market researchers... are playing games with you and me and with this entire country. Their so-called samples of opinion are no more accurate or reliable than my grandmother's big toe was when it came to predicting the weather. " "Those of you watching and listening, get a cup of coffee or a spot of tea and join us back here in just a few moments. " "We may see Michael Jackson's baby before we know the final outcome of this race for the House of Representatives tonight. " "No question now that Kerry's rapidly reaching the point where he's got his back to the wall, his shirttails on fire and the bill collector's at the door." "John Kerry needs something on the order of a 55 or 60-yard field goal to win this." "We used to say if a frog had side pockets, he'd carry a handgun." (Who's 'WE'?) Dang, what a journalist! theshark8777 09-02-2006, 11:30 AM Wasnt there just a warning to keep this apolitical? You cant leave well enough alone can ya? Gotta get that last jab in. Typical. Central Perk 09-02-2006, 11:42 AM Wow, someone in this thread is bitter and angry. Hint, it's not me. Anyway, that was a nice montage. Bob is a great journalist. I'm not saying Couric isn't talented, but Bob Schieffer was a true news journalist, where as Couric is more fluff. Steve M. 09-02-2006, 01:34 PM It seems to be all about sex appeal for CBS. What I said had nothing to do with the 2004 scandal. I like Dan Rather, and I think he's a hell of a journalist. I just think he's better-suited for that position, and not that of anchor. AKA 09-03-2006, 12:40 PM Field reporter, instead of anchor. Sorry, the wording of my post was a bit peculiar. |
