lilhave 08-21-2006, 04:27 PM My Yankees just ended all the drama of who is going to win the American League east, defeating the hapless Red Sox in every aspect of the game.
A special thanks should go to Theo Epstein, probably the worst GM in the history of major league baseball. The adage has always been "pitching is 90 percent of the game" and Epstein assembled a bullpen that rivals the "sisters of Mercy" No lefty in the bull pen, knowing a 5 game series with the Yanks was approaching and aware of the fact that the Yanks can put 7 lefties in the lineup, what does Epstein do right before the trading deadline.? He trades for a catcher, who when in Atlanta, had half the staff not want him behind the plate. Lopez is traded to Baltimore and he was used at first and as a dh. This is who they traded for. Of course in today's game he fails to block a ball in the dirt and that was the winning run. Theo didn't want to resign Myers so the Yanks got him and boy has he been effective again lefties.
Yanks picked up Lidle and Abreu, took a shot with Ponsoon. Bottom line is the Yanks made changes, Boston went for Lopez.
Thanks again Theo.
Of course Theo thought Damon was washed up. Just made player of the week but Boston got Coco Crisp. They didn't even have to choke, it's a team that just smells.

-yea i agree theo shouldve made a move before the deadline, it was a very poor choice not to.
-the sox could still get the wild card so we are not out
-damon cant throw, crisp can, you cant say that crisp sucks when you see how hard he tried to catch giambis home run, he got injured but he tried, damon probably wouldnt have made any effort to catch it
Janice 08-21-2006, 04:34 PM How very gracious of you Harvey. Class act, as always. Gloating becomes you.

Damon has a weak arm but he is everything you want in a lead off batter. Hits 300, goes deep in the count and has suprising power. 20 hrs. is superb for a leadoff batter. Then you take the intangible, Damon is a gamer, a proven winner. Why, you think Boston is better with Crisp out there.?

Actually that's not always the way it goes, not with everyone. I seem to recall a Sox sweep not all that long ago that led to a World Series win. I never gloated once, and never knocked the Yankees. But that's just me. Class is as class does.

It's not gloating but I got tired of reading how Epstein was such a great GM, bringing a chanpionship to a team. void of one for 86 years. Curious to see how the Boston press describes this debacle. A major league team should be ashamed to have a bullpen of what this one consisted of. Good for double A but not the major leagues. Someone has to take the blame.
Like the Yanks YES network, Boston has it's own network and makes a bundle as do the Yanks. Difference is Boston didn't want to spend the bucks. They could have gotten Lidle and Abreu but it would have cost. When you are a playoff contender and you know you have weaknesses, you do better then just Lopez. The Boston braintrust must have known if the Yanks got to the bullpen, the game was over.

like i said i will admit that theo shouldve made a move, it was dumb not to do something about our pitching, i definitely think he shouldve put papelbon into the rotation if he wasnt going to try to acquire any pitchers, im only confident in 3 of our starting pitchers-wells, beckett and schilling. but it was a bad move on his part, dont blame the actual players though, because the red sox arent a bad team, our GM just isnt doing his job right.

Some people are born with class and some aren't. He acts like they just won the WS. Let's see what happens when the playoffs start. The Yankees haven't won a title in quite a few years. If they get swept in the first round, I bet he wouldn't like a thread like this bashing his team.

Can't agree with Papelbon becoming a starter as that would leave you with no one to close in the ninth. As it is you are weak for the 7th and 8th and can't afford to also have no one for the ninth.
The players can only do what they are capable of and Epstein didn't assemble a winning squad. Any production you get from behind the plate is gravy but you must have a defensive catcher, one that can call a game, one that instills confidence in the staff. Again why Lopez?, was that the misssing piece.?

Obviously sports isn't your thing. I can remember in old Boston Garden when Red Auerbach, the Celtic coach thought the game was over, he would light his victory cigar. That was during the game, to rub it in. You ever see when a team sweeps, the fans take out the brooms? Ever notice how fans wave the crying towels to the losing team. Fans always boast, crow and glee with victory. Don't fans and thousand of them boo the the opponents, ridicule them etc. So I dislike the Boston teams, always have and I have a chance to drink the victory. I should just be quiet because you say so.

Oh I love sports and I've been known to gloat a few times in my life especially when The Cowboys beat up on the Redskins or The Eagles but I try to have some class when I know their's fans of the other teams around here. I remember one time in the late 80's the Eagles ran up the score against us. They were a contender and we were an alsoran. I never forgot about it and when we were finally good it felt great to rub their faces in it. We went on to win the SB 3 out of 4 years and The Eagles are still waiting. Everything comes around sooner or later.

Typical Yankee fans. Always running off at the mouth. There is still alot of season left just like there was 4 games left it that one playoff series...wasn't that the one were the "Skanks" were up 3-0???? Yea that's the one. The one that they blew a 3-0 lead in. How pathetic was that!!! It's one thing to sweep a team in August but how about finishing off a team in Oct. when you have a 3-0 lead. It' doesn't matter anyway. The White Sox will end up beating the hell out of the Yanks and it will be another 200 million down the drain!!

26 times the champs in all of baseball. Unequalled in all of sports and Boston wins once in 86 years and cries about the "curse of the Bambino" Can't help it if beantown makes bad trades or no trades and then sobs. don't recall them crying when the Celts won all theose titles. They bragged and boasted about Cousy, Sharmen, Russel, the Jones boys, Heinsohn etc. Then it was allright to say how great they were but now that they assembled a pitching staff that the girls choir of St. Mary's would be ashamed of, say nothing.
It would be different if the series was determined by a bloop single, a grounder thru a drawn in infield, a swinging bunt, one wild pitch etc, where with the right breaks the Redsox could have one three but no, the Redsox were shown to be what they are. They were beaten in every aspect of the game, from pitching to hitting to defense. Instead of talking about the lack of class exhibited by the Yankees, maybe a petition to oust Epstein would be better. In the N.Y. papers, Epestein was interviewed and stated " I can't compete with the Yankees so we must do it our way" What way is that. Get Javy Lopez. Next year three of Boston's rotation will consist of three guys over 40, Wells, Shilling and Wakefield and a bullpen in shambles, and you will talk about the Yankees boasting.
Maybe it's time for the Boston fans to wake up and smell the coffee.

Sincerely, it's better to have loved and lost then not loved at all. If the Yanks make the playoffs, at least I have some games to watch and root for, and have the knowledge that the Yanks made moves to try to win it all. Of course as the adage goes, "the best laid plans of mice and men" On the other hand the Bosox fans can be rest assured manangement didn't give their team a fair chance to win. Comes the trading deadline of July 31, serious teams that want to make a run at all the marbles attempt to make moves that will benefit their team, losers do nothing or dump salary. Epstein sat back and made a cosmetic move of picking up Lopez. Can anyone tell me that with their pitching staff this was the best trade available. I don't love George, he has many faults but one of them is not that he gives up and doesn't want to win.
If Boston doesn't make a bunch of moves in the off season and I don't think they will, they will be cooked for years to come. In this 5 game sweep Boston released 3 pitchers, so what's left? Wakefield's coming back and will win ten in a row.?

I repeat, I can't guarantee victory, God I'm not but I know my team is trying to reward it's fans. Deep down the Red Sox fans know their team left them high and dry. That's my definition of a winner and a loser. You give it your best shot and that's all you can do. 26 titles to me means they Yankees gave it their all. 1 in 86 years to means the Bosox are all talk. Easy to say "you spent money, you did this and that" but the bottom line is like in life, try.
At least I have something to look forward too. Boston fans have to wait for their team to take to the hardwood or run out to the twenty because it's time to turn in the gloves.

Since 96 they have won more championships, been in more playoffs then any team, so I'm not sure what sport your discussing. I at no time said they would win the world series or even be in it. My statement and I stand on it is that the Sox is dead and the blame can be laid on management's doorstep. Their entire scouting staff should be canned for pushing the players they did. I will say they handed the American league east to the Yankees by thier pitiful performance in front of the Boston faithful.
Am I glad we buried Boston? Sure am, never liked the franchise and have always believed the fans to be the biggest crybabies and have the most alibi's of any major league team. I'm sure the Boston papers knocked the Yankees and down played how crappy Boston played.
One poster spoke of the weak arm on Damon. Sure he does but I would prefer his weak arm to having Manny tiptoing around in the outfield for a ball hit to the wall. A kindergarten kid puts more effort into chasing a ball in the school yard then Manny does in the outfield. No wonder management has tried to dump him year after year, and even with his power production, no one wants him.

Going all the way back to 1996 are we? The Yanks haven't won a title since 2000. That's five straight baseball seasons and with the money they spend on players they should do a lot better. Even the Marlins and your hated Redsox have won titles since The Yankees. I've never seen anyone gloat this much over regular season baseball games...you'd think this was the World Series.
Brian 08-22-2006, 05:30 PM Everybody had written off the Dodgers after they went 1-13 after the start of the All-Star Break and they now lead the division. Anything can happen.
Yes the Yankees have gotten into the postseason a lot since 1996 but they have been choking every year since 2000, when they last won the World Series. They won the bulk of their 26 Series in the 1920s to the 1950s (18) They've only won 8 since the 1960 season. So the argument that "they've won 26 World Series" is a faulty one.

Each and every year since 96 they have made the playoffs. It surely means the right players and a management team that tries. Short 3 out 5 series means nothing. One team can be superior then another but the poorer team gets a pitcher that pitches two strong games or a player busts loose with 4 hrs. and bats 500. anything can happen. Now tradition. It's a great feeling to go into Yankee stadium, look up and see all the banners flying, denoting Yankee dominance for all those years. Looking up at Fenway all one sees is Pigeons. History is based on the past, history is important, it shows were you have been, and where your going. Great feeling at the stadium to enter monument park and see the busts of Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Lazzari, Ford etc. Yes, I'm proud of the Yankee past, as I'm proud of their future.

You have 2 40-something pitchers that you are relying way too much and others in that starting staff that aren't ready to handle the pressure of a playoff run. Can't wait till the fall of the empire so we can start another Stienbrenner(?) eruption watch!!
lilhave 08-22-2006, 05:53 PM Everybody had written off the Dodgers after they went 1-13 after the start of the All-Star Break and they now lead the division.
Only 8 since 1960? So who else in baseball has won 8 since 1960? Boston has their one for the past 86 years. So if the Yanks choke with ONLY 8, what about the other teams.? 10 years in a row, making the playoffs is choking? I quote facts and you give opinions. Makes sense to me if it makes sense to you. How do you define choking? Win your division and not go all the way? What about teams that flounder all year and go no where, what's that.?
Harvey
Bobby F. 08-22-2006, 05:57 PM Each and every year since 96 they have made the playoffs. It surely means the right players and a management team that tries.
Harvey
And this is something to be proud of??? The highest payroll in baseball and you're happy that they're in the playoff???  I always thought the goal was to win the World Series. 200 mil. down the drain if it's just too the playoffs.
Mr. Television 08-22-2006, 06:02 PM Each and every year since 96 they have made the playoffs.
Harvey
No it just means that half the teams in baseball can't spend like yours. Nothing to be proud of really. It's one thing to be proud of your teams history ( I am of mind) but it's totally something else if that what you live by You are only as good as your last game or your last title and you haven't won a title since 2000. Being in the playoffs year after year means nothing if you don't win something. Atlanta's been in the playoffs practically every year since the early 90's and have one title to show for it. I heard some ESPN announcers claim that the Braves were a dynasty.

Choking would be buying all the players that you want and not winning the championship. Harv. Come on man! The goal is not to reach the playoffs. It's to win the Championship. George would tell you taht. How pissed has he been the past five years that they've had the highest payroll yet haven't won the championship. Even Litlle Leaugers can tell you that the goal is to win the championship. Quit living in your Yankee myopia and get with the program.:D

I thought the goal of every team was to win the world series, not only the Yankees but every team. Difference is Yankee management cares and invests to try win the whole thing. Some teams ala Boston give a half hearted attempt and try to delude the fans with excuses. Never said all trades work out and everything comes up roses. Injuries occurr among other things but you must try.

If you think that is the goal then you need to be the first one who stands up for a hard salary cap instead of the soft-ass one that's in place now. How can the Royals compete with the Yanks when it comes to spending.
Which one is it Harv? The Championship or the Playoffs. You seem to be flipping back and forth now.

One step at a time. First you win your division, then the playoffs and then you go for the championship. It's not so easy anymore. I can remember when there 16 teams, 8 in each division and it was real easy for a team like the Yanks. The Washington Senators, St. Louis Brown, Phialadelphia Athletics were all stiffs, so you only had to beat out 4 teams to make it to the world series. From the 50's on, Cleveland had their one good year in 54, with their 4 20 game winners, otherwise did very little. Detroitt had their in 1968 with McLain and lolich, and Kaline, so the Yankees rolled thru the 50's. Now if you have to win 15 games to be the world series champs, anything can happen. So it's remarkable the Yankees did it 4 years in a row. You need every break and everyone has to stay hot.
I'm the first one to admit that George can be pompous, overbearing , meddling, among his other faults but I can't knock his desire to win. Epstein could have gotten Abreu and Lidle but didn't want to go for the bucks. There is your difference but not one comment that Epstien sucks. Only the Yanks spend a lot and should win more.
Winners rejoice and losers cry.

Which also shows you that the teams before the divisional playoffs began were flawed because if they had to win that many playoff games back then, odds are they wouldn't have as many WS titles today. Of course I can also say that the league had less teams then so the teams were stronger and the talent wasn't as deluted as it is today with so many mediocre teams.. Either way it only matters what you have done lately.

Your throwing out a bunch of statements and some are just not true. When I was a kid a top notch ball player made $15,000 a year. Minimum salary was $7,500, it wasn't a big business like today. Kids didn't have the great desire to play the game as today. Many with talent couldn't afford to go to d ball, and that's where you began for paltry dollars. I played high school and college ball, and upon graduation St. Louis in the american league wanted to sign me to go to Texas to begin in d league. Then it was a, b, c, d. they offered me a bonus of 500 dollars and a salary of $150.00 per month. I declined as did many others. There was no national exposure, and with no money not many stayed. The major leagurers all had jobs in the off season to make ends meet. Car salesman, waiters, etc. There was no autograph signings. The talent wasn't that great. For that reason there were many more players then today who played for 15-25 years, they needed the money, they couldn't quit. Jim Katt a Yankee announcer on the Yes network pitched for 25 years, unheard of today. The brand of baseball played was different but not really better. There was no splitter, just one threw a palm ball, one a fork ball, a slider was unheard of. Just a big roundhouse curve. Pitchers were expected to go nine and only those who got bombed as starters were in the bullpen. No specialists, no setup men, no closers, short men. It was a different game, so it's hard to compare different eras, just how someone dominated his time, and that the Yankees did.

That actually made me laugh. Not because it's funny but because it makes you look foolish considering you've said something like that at least twice in this thread.
I've seen worse fans on other message boards but all of them have something in common; their favorite teams teams lost in the playoffs.

P.S. On to the playoffs, much better then saying "why didn't we sign Damon, why didn't we go after Abreu, maybe we should have chased pitching" That's what losers do, speak of ifs and maybe's. Right now I'm working on our rotation for the playoffs. Plus, who knows, maybe Pavono returns as Matsui and Sheffield might. Such problems! Boston could bring up one of their pitchers in single A, can't do worse. Heard they got one guy in the low minors who can bring it at 80 mph. That's a heater for Boston.
Brian Damage 08-23-2006, 05:52 PM I'm working on our rotation for the playoffs.

You're missing the point. No one is argueing that the Red Sox could have signed other players. The point is you're a typical blowhard Yank fan who hasn't won anything yet this year. You've got a hard-on(probably had to use viagra) because they're set to win the division and make the playoffs. Whoopy!! The last 5 times they made the playofs they didn't quite do as well as they should have with that payroll of theirs.
And by the way, you may have a real problem when Sheffield does return. He's never been too much of a team player and with Abreu out in his position things might just get reeeeeal interesting in that clubhouse.

Funny you mention the Lone Ranger. Have over 1000 episodes from radio and the full run of the Tv series. Brace Beemer on radio and Clayton Moore from TV had two of the finest voices. Grew up with the Ranger on radio, had the secret decoder ring with the secret compartment. Wish I still had it as it would be worth big bucks. Then it was a quarter and the top of a cerial box of "Cherrios" and you sent it to Battle Creek, Michigan.
The creator of the Ranger, Fran Stryker also wrote and produced on radio Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, with his wonder dog King and the Green Hornet. Great stuff.
Last year at a old time radio convention met the narrator of the show, Fred Foy, who was voted the best announcer in the history of radio by his peers. It was his voice who said "return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear etc" Man is in his late 80's but his voice was as clear as ever.
Guess there is more then just baseball. Someday maybe I'll tell you who was the greatest player I was fortunate to see.

Not the Lone Ranger, but I got in Casey Jones in a few weeks ago. I got it because of Alan Hale, but either way I enjoyed the series. Not really a western, but thought I would mention it anyway.

Once again my elderly friend you have missed the point. Brian Damage reference to the Ranger was used in an example in context with baseball. Your usage was to bore us with your inability to prove us wrong about your lack of class when it comes to celebrating the "possible" winning of a division title.
