Stacey and Sascha are also included as unisex names. I used to also know a girl named Michael (yes, same spelling and pronunciation) while I was in middle school. Ireneparalegal 08-16-2006, 11:33 PM Michael Learned played Olivia Walton on The Waltons. James 08-17-2006, 02:57 PM Stacey and Sascha are also included as unisex names. James 08-17-2006, 03:05 PM Names like Ashley, Shannon, Kelly, Leslie, Terry, Tracey, and Taylor were once considered masculine names, but now there are many more girls with those names. Ashley was the middle name of a male friend of mine in college. Shannon was the name of a male friend in school, although I think his name was technically Michael. Kelly was the name of another male acquaintance in college. Tracy was the middle name of a male school friend. (There's also Tracy O'Grady in the NBA, as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers' Tracy Woodson, who was the last out in the Cincinnati Reds' Tom Browning's perfect game September 16, 1988.) To me Terry is a masculine name. Terri is the feminine name--remember the episode of The Wonder Years where Kevin met a girl at the beach who called herself "Terri with an 'R-I'?" You forgot about Sally and Sue. Heck, Johnny Cash even sang a song about a boy named Sue. (LOL) Andthere are dudes called Sally or Sal for short. :D Courtnee 08-17-2006, 08:42 PM Yep. It's more common in southern states. swedeace 08-17-2006, 08:49 PM You forgot about Sally and Sue. Heck, Johnny Cash even sang a song about a boy named Sue. (LOL) That's true. I had forgotten about Johnny Cash's song until you brought it up. By the way, do you happen to know if he sang about any real-life male named Sue? Or, was it just a fictional person? Ireneparalegal 08-17-2006, 08:50 PM Actor Haley Joel Osment (sp?)...Haley is traditionally a girl's name. Sharop 08-17-2006, 08:54 PM There's also the name Jean - the radio personality Jean Shepherd, who narrates the film A Christmas Story, and wrote the book upon which it was based (In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash) was a male. I read that he was named after his father, who in turn was named after a male character in a French novel - and in France, Jean is a boy's name. swedeace 08-17-2006, 08:57 PM Oh, yeah.... I remembered another name. My co-worker friend's ex-husband's name is Madison. Ireneparalegal 08-17-2006, 08:58 PM There's also the name Jean - the radio personality Jean Shepherd, who narrates the film A Christmas Story, and wrote the book upon which it was based (In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash) was a male. I read that he was named after his father, who in turn was named after a male character in a French novel - and in France, Jean is a boy's name. But isn't it pronounced "John"? It may be spelled JEAN, but I am thinking if it's a french name, then the pronounciation would be JOHN. The male form of Jean is GENE. I know you said his name was derived from a french novel, but I am thinking he was christened JOHN, with the spelling being of french origin. I know you said his name was derived from a french novel, but I am thinking he was christened JOHN, with the spelling being of french origin. I've always been under the impression that people always pronounced Shepherd's first name as "Jean" instead of "John." I'm not entirely certain, I must admit, but that's the impression I've always had. JNSBSB 08-21-2006, 05:02 AM That's true. I had forgotten about Johnny Cash's song until you brought it up. By the way, do you happen to know if he sang about any real-life male named Sue? Or, was it just a fictional person? That I'm not sure about. LOL theshark8777 08-21-2006, 06:37 AM That I'm not sure about. LOL I thouhgt it was a fictional character. Sharop 08-21-2006, 06:54 AM I thouhgt it was a fictional character. I read that A Boy Named Sue was inspired by Jean Shepherd having a boy's name (I think the guy who wrote it, Shel Silverstein, knew him.) swedeace 08-21-2006, 07:33 AM I read that A Boy Named Sue was inspired by Jean Shepherd having a boy's name (I think the guy who wrote it, Shel Silverstein, knew him.) Oh, I see. Thanks for the info. I was curious. Another two names I remembered: a) I was watching "The Break-Up" at the dollar theatre yesterday, and I saw one of the actor's middle names had Lauren in it. I don't remember if anyone here has already mentioned it or not. b) Actor Mark-Linn Baker. I've also heard a variation of Lynn being used as a male name, on a couple of occasions. James 09-09-2006, 01:34 AM I once heard of a woman named Ernie. Could that be a nickname for something else? For what it's worth, she didn't have a husband named Bert. :D  James 09-09-2006, 01:37 AM b) Actor Mark-Linn Baker. I've also heard a variation of Lynn being used as a male name, on a couple of occasions. There's also former baseball pitcher (and strikeout king!) Nolan Ryan, whose full name is Lynn Nolan Ryan, Jr. crystals 09-09-2006, 09:58 PM Jamie- Lynn Sigler is an actress who has a traditional boy name, if you take out the Lynn part of the name. Also, Jamie Lee Curtis. I have a cousin named Kerry who is related to my family by being married to one of my cousins. Kerry is a guy. There seems to be a lot of unisex names out there. |
