View Full Version : Question I wish I could ask the producer about the opening credits 1979-84

Before 1979, The Trio was presented in a way that was consistent to their characters on the show like when they are just on the beach together at the ending credits. It was platonic looking just like it was on the show. But all of a sudden in 1979, The way Jack is walking with Janet and Chrissy on the Pier makes it look like they are his play toys-lol I mean what was up with the closing credits of season 4 and 5 with Janet and Chrissy walking with their head on Jack's Shoulder. That wasn't consistent to what we saw on the show at all. And it continues in seasons 6 to 8 with Jack walking with his arms around Terri and janet IN FRONT of Furley. So I just wish can ask Ted the producer why did they get away from the Platonic look of the trio after 1979 when on the show they are never ALL over Jack like that.

I didn't see the trio being anything but friends and at times "brotherly/sisterly like"...I have had male friends and i have put my head on their shoulders for whatever reason...or they would give me a hug...it may look like something else to everyone else, but it's all abt friendship and the closeness. That is what the trio shared. I mean, they all lived together, they saw each other at their best and at their worst.

No. I have walked down the street with MY head on the shoulder of a platonic friend. LOL

You got to look at the whole picture. They were at the boardwalk. It's not like they were going to care who was looking and wondering "Hmmmm". At the boardwalk you see all kinds of people and no one gawks or wonders at the people. If I seen a guy walking with two girls, arm in arm, that wouldn't make me turn my head or make me wonder. And since we know the trio and the fact that they live together and are friends and they love each other as family, then what is the problem? nothing.

To me it didn;t have the family look, it had the "These are my Honey buns" look-lol-lol

I really don't think it was intended to look anything but platonic. Like Irene said, I have platonic guy friends and we sometimes hold hands and I'll put my head on their shoulder every now and then, no big deal. Now if Jack and the girls were making out, I could see your point, but them walking together like that is totally innocent. Them being in front of Furley was no big deal either, after all, Furley knew that they were close friends, he probably thought nothing of it.

I see what you're saying about the credits, but I think it actually is pretty consistant with the actual show. If you look at the way Jack and the girls kiss each other whenever they share good news (like someone getting a new job, etc.) they're showing that the three are "close" but not "THAT close". It also conveys more of a happy feeling, I think, than a romantic one.
I always accepted it as the three of them were supposed to be best friends (not to ignore Larry of course). So given they live together, AND are single, the light hugging and kissing shows there closeness and how close Jack is to that line, yet so far...

But Furley would usually say something on the show if the Trio was too affectonate toward each other

Hmmm.. Interesting question. I never thought about it before, but I guess it could be taken many ways.

I do have guy friends that I hold hands with. I believe that the opening credits were more of a prelude to showing that they were close in real life, not a portrayl of the characters on the show. More or less that they were close in real life and then the characters were far apart.
Not sure if this makes one bit of sense or not. LOL!!

Men and women can be very close friends, hold hands, hug...I see no problem there. Do you? Oh my, look who I'm asking :D

I haven't viewed the girls and Jack as anything other than platonic. In the closing credits, they're going back home after a day at the pier and they look tired so the girls rest their head on Jacks shoulder perfectly innocent.

I just found it odd that Cindy replaced Chrissy and the opening credits remained the same. It should've changed to accomodate the changes on the show.

They probably would have changed them if Suzanne still wasn't on the show ( during the closing tags).

Just to add my two cents in... I agree with Irene and the other folks who think there's nothing wrong with the opening credits. We often see the trio hugging or kissing each other in episodes... for example refer to "Paradise Lost" right after Larry & Furley have done their con job on Jack, Janet, and Terri. The three of them were hugging pretty tightly in the living room, and Larry and Furley were looking on. Also note that Furley never mentioned anything wrong. Why would he? After all, from his POV, Jack was "one of the girls." :p

As far as holding hands with a platonic friend... I really can't see anything wrong with that. I have had close female friends that I have held hands with, and our relationship was certainly purely platonic. At least I never had any thoughts of making the relationship otherwise, just because we were holding hands. (I can't speak for my friends but as far as I knew - and I could be wrong - they didn't have any intention of taking our relationship 'to the next level' either.) And I never was uncomfortable with holding hands just because it was a platonic relationship. I will grant that I don't make a habit of tightly hugging or kissing platonic female friends, but then I don't live with two girls in the same apartment, and I would say that Jack Tripper is closer to his roommates than I was to my friends...

Yes I have held hands with some of my close platonic female friends in public, and I never thought it was weird to do so. But I suppose different people are comfortable with different things. Also, some people might not form platonic friendships with the opposite sex that are that close...

(Not trying to bash anyone - just pointing out different people may think differently... nothing wrong, in my opinion, with either POV...)

The only thing I was trying to point out was that Jack Tripper and his roommates were indeed very close friends, closer than most normal friends we would have. Their behavior will naturally be different accordingly.

Hey folks, this was not a realistic show. It was slapstick comedy based upon shows like the Honeymooners, kind of like comedy theater. People on this show do not behave the way that people behave in real life. Why should we expect them to behave realistically on the opening credits.

If anything the show itself was even less realistic than the opening credits.

Well, I have to agree with you there. Especially for certain characters. I mean, is it realistic to have someone in real life that thinks and acts all the time like Mr. Ralph Furley does? :p Is it realistic to have a person (I mean Cindy Snow here) who hits a person EVERY SINGLE TIME she opens a door? That defies the laws of probability. Is it realistic to have a person as dumb as Season 3/Season 4 Chrissy Snow sometimes (not always, but sometimes) was?

Was the trio's behavior always realistic?

The answer to all of these questions above, is a definite no!!

Why should we expect them to behave realistically on the opening credits.

I would agree with this general statement.

If anything the show itself was even less realistic than the opening credits.

And I agree here also. But...

Glad someone agreed with me-lol

What I don't agree with is this. Not to be rude, but would you care to enlighten me as to how Rich3 is agreeing with you (TVResearcher)? Weren't you claiming that the opening credits were completely unrealistic (perhaps even less realistic than the show itself), since, according to you, men and women who are platonic friends don't hold hands or act like Jack & Co. do in the opening credits?

Isn't it unrealistic for Jack to accidentally schedule like 6 dates for 1 night? Isn't it unrealistic for Jack to beat a pro boxer in the ring? Isn't it unrealistic for Cindy to knock out a burgler by opening the door?

The show is unrealistic. Why would you expect realistic credits? The credits are actually realistic in relative terms to the over-the-top things that happen in the show. That's why the show is funny.

I read it to mean that the show itself was less realistic than the opening credits. But anyway - it'd be a waste of time to continue to squabble over the platonic thing... also I'm a bit tired of seeing you keep capitalizing PLATONIC FRIENDS (and this is not meant to be a flame or complaint... just an honest statement)... each time I see that I get the impression (note: which I'm sure (and I'm not being sarcastic here) you didn't mean to convey) that somehow you think I'm overlooking the 'platonic' word, or that I just don't understand what platonic means...

So let's just drop the issue. :)

Hehe, interesting post.

Isn't it unrealistic for Jack to accidentally schedule like 6 dates for 1 night?

Well, the character Jack Tripper does tend to get mixed up sometimes. So it's not entirely unbelievable. With an emphasis on entirely. I think the max he's scheduled is like 3 or 4 for 1 night. I will agree though that that might be a bit of an exaggeration... I mean accidentally scheduling 2, sure, but 3 or 4 for the same night is pushing it a bit... just a bit...

Isn't it unrealistic for Jack to beat a pro boxer in the ring?

To be fair, though, Jack didn't beat the pro boxer outright in a straight fight/match... it was through a series of rather... interesting circumstances that he happened to knock his opponent out. Add to that that his opponent knew that Jack was no pro boxer and hence his opponent might not have been as cautious as he usually would have been.

Isn't it unrealistic for Cindy to knock out a burgler by opening the door?

This I completely agree with. The entire 'klutziness' part of the Cindy character is unrealistic. The fact that, on the show, pretty much every time she opens a door, she knocks someone down or out -- this fact alone defies the laws of probability. What are the chances that someone just happens to be on the other side of the door at the exact same time Cindy opens it? The odds of this happening once are low enough. The odds of this happening *all* the time, in fact pretty much every time Cindy opens a (read: any) door, are astronomical, and quite unbelievable. This is a large part of why I never liked the Cindy character that much. The burglar example is a prime example of Cindy's probability-defying klutziness.

The show is unrealistic. Why would you expect realistic credits? The credits are actually realistic in relative terms to the over-the-top things that happen in the show. That's why the show is funny.
:yeahthat

Plus, the show got more and more unrealistic over the years. Season 1 was fairly realistic, actually. Then the Chrissy character became so dumb it boggled the imagination, the Furley character came on and, while a funny character to watch, behaved so weirdly I can't see anybody in real life - except perhaps for mentally ill patients - behaving like that, and, worst of all, the Cindy character came on and flagrantly violated the laws of probability, repeatedly. Did I mention that Janet also got dumber as time went on? Ditto with Terri, actually. And even Jack.

One particularly unrealistic episode was "And Justice for Jack." If any judge ruled like that in real life, her license should have been suspended at the least.

Not even mentioning the other unrealistic things that were probably goof-ups, like the gambling episode (some guy said earlier that he worked in a casino and that episode was completely off in terms of how gambling was done), and like the Terri character playing the violin (I happen to be a violinist, and I can say with certainty that if Terri was that bad at the violin, she didn't *need* to be reading any music scores. She should have first mastered how to hold the instrument.).
