View Full Version : "You are NOT to drive OUR CAR!!!" The episode when Greg gets in trouble
Ireneparalegal 08-04-2006, 09:46 PM cracks me up because I KNEW DAMN WELL what the parents said/meant when they grounded Greg and told him not to drive. Yes, Mike said, "You are not to drive our car for a week." but Greg of all people, should have known EXACTLY what Mike said/meant.
Would you have tried that on your parent(s) or would you know exactly what they meant and not tried to use another person's car?
gilligan fanatic 08-04-2006, 09:54 PM If my parents didn't watch the Brady Bunch I would
Have you noticed you can't use anything said on the Brady Bunch because people will know you are lying to them? "Something Suddenly Came Up" everybody knows what you are talking about now.
I saw that ep recently, and I am quite sure that Mike's exact words were: "You are not to drive the car for a week." No real difference, but Greg does misquote him exactly on that.

I know...LOL...as a parent I don't know how many times I told my son, "Don't play ball in the house!!!!"
BuddyHinton 08-04-2006, 11:42 PM One of thr true great episodes right here! I'm surprised Barry did not go on to more acting he really is quite good, certainly "the rock" of the kids. I try to tell people how good Barry and Robert are in this show and people by and large just stare at me with that... "It's just the Brady BUNCH, it's a dumb old show" look.
PrettyinPink55 08-05-2006, 12:55 AM  I still use "something suddenly came up" and people are stupid enough to buy it, so hey...! ;)
Stupid uncultured Non-Brady watchers! ;) LOL! J/K!
The Flying Dutchmans 08-05-2006, 08:02 PM C,mon I mean after all what is greg going to say, he knew if he fessed up to the truth theyd ground him even further, its just that he came up with an idea that gave him an out, I mean they grounded him further anyway, but greg being greg figured if he stood by what he said that he could still get out if it, so what does he do ? he gives them time to calm down and just before bed he pays them that I think what your doing is unfair visit, greg is so clever. :)
Ireneparalegal 08-05-2006, 08:03 PM Greg didn't come up with the idea, his friend did. It was his friend's car and he put the idea in Greg's head.
Rich3 08-05-2006, 09:01 PM Greg's lying and further lying to support his first lie was a way to show just how wild and irrational teenagers can be. Even good, normal ones.

...we/my friends took out our parent's cars on a regular basis...lol. Even at 12 years of age. No wonder I passed my driver's test the first time... a lotta experience! :*)
I had to wait till 18 to have my own car (luckily enough to have moms buy), a very nice original '64 SS Impala, to get on the road myself. My dad passed away eary, but SHE knew...lol. Not all that trustworthy when it comes to vehicles...
I often think about telling her the amount of times we swiped her car, not just the one time we got it "slightly stuck"... then again, it might work against me... hehehe.
I can't believe we never got pulled over by Suffolk's finest...
The Flying Dutchmans 08-13-2006, 06:07 PM So remember people when your kid does what greg did and you have to do the same thing and thell them, your not the drive the car for a week, and wait a minute dont go yet, before you try and pull that brady bunch crap on me your NOT to drive ANY CAR for a week.
Sam The Butcher 04-21-2007, 10:07 PM I saw that ep recently, and I am quite sure that Mike's exact words were: "You are not to drive the car for a week." No real difference, but Greg does misquote him exactly on that.
I noticed that too. I was listening specifically for Mike to say "our car", he didn't, I replayed it a couple more times just to be sure. That's kind of a weird goof since the episode's theme is mentioning somebody's "exact words".
Rich3 04-21-2007, 10:39 PM "The car" is essentially the same as "our car" since they are both referring to one distinct car.
The phrase, "Something suddenly came up", did not even come into the culture until the Brady Bunch was parodied in the 1990's. Before that if you were to use that phrase no one would have even linked it to the Brady Bunch. You could have still used it as an excuse, probably.

Not true. I watched that episode where Marcia said "Something suddenly came up" and for days at school people were using that phrase. I heard people reference the Brady Bunch whenever someone happened to use that phrase. Sometimes people used the phrase to be sarcastic. In college, someone did say that for some reason and someone else mentioned the Brady Bunch. So, that phrase was well known prior.
Rich3 04-21-2007, 10:45 PM Now that I think about it, from Greg's point of view he almost had a case to use someone else's car. It was like a loophole. His parents had no legal right to stop him from driving someone else's car.
But from the parents' point of view, they wanted to punish him by not letting him use the car for a week. They never imagined he would borrow someone else's car because that would have been even worse, as far as Greg missing the whole point of the punishment. So they were right to extend his punishment.

Maybe it was used among your friends or people in your age group, but it didn't last long. Nowadays people of all ages are familiar with it. It wasn't that way before.
It's the same with people saying "Marcia Marcia Marcia" when they imitated Jan Brady. EVERYONE knows what they are doing automatically. But before it was parodied in the 90's, only a Brady Bunch fan would have known.

You are correct in stating only one who watched Brady Bunch would know what was said/meant, but you are wrong when you say only when it was parodied, did it hit big. It may not have been big in the 70's, but surely when it was said, and it was said A LOT, you knew damn well where you got that from.
Rich3 04-21-2007, 11:01 PM The Brady Bunch parodies were more popular than the original show ever was. Even my parents were fans and they would never watch the show unless you forced them at gunpoint. I have friends who liked the movies but can't stand the show.
I think the show was much better. I'd rather watch 3 random episodes back to back than to watch any movie parody.
Heidi Dawn 04-23-2007, 01:17 PM I watched this episode the other day! I understood it to be that Greg was banned from driving any car for a week.

For sure. It was made clear, very clear. Greg knew, but found a loophole when his friend offered Greg his car. If it wasn't for the concert he would have dealt with it fine. What I don't get is why didn't Greg just ask for A RIDE?
Johnny be good! 04-23-2007, 08:17 PM Because George was sick.
Ireneparalegal 04-23-2007, 08:21 PM Because George was sick.
Thanx for reminding me of that. I couldn't remember the reason. However, Greg had other friends, surely he could have found a ride. Or take the bus or a taxi.
julian bozo 04-24-2007, 12:56 PM Thanx for reminding me of that. I couldn't remember the reason. However, Greg had other friends, surely he could have found a ride. Or take the bus or a taxi.
A taxi or bus would of cost money. Greg was saving his money for pizzas and french fries and girls.
Rich3 04-24-2007, 08:19 PM "The stadium" sounds like something out on the edge of town somewhere, someplace a city bus would not likely go to.
Ireneparalegal 04-24-2007, 09:07 PM He could have asked his mom or dad to drive him there. Their punishment didn't include NOT BEING DRIVEN SOMEWHERE.
Also, there were many times the Brady kids went places that were not obviously close, so they couldn't have always walked.
Johnny be good! 04-25-2007, 03:08 PM He probably wasn't thinking straight. He also lost the car in the last season, because of his UFO hoax. But this time, he only lost it Saturday and Sunday, and got it back Monday.
catlover79 04-25-2007, 05:56 PM That line sounds like an excuse my brother would've given our parents in his teen years.
OKCRay 06-09-2007, 01:57 AM A taxi or bus would of cost money. Greg was saving his money for pizzas and french fries and girls.
Actually he was saving his money for that rock concert.
