View Full Version : With or without commercials? what's you preference?
Just wondering what everyone thought of commercials included in sets. Personally, I prefer to edit them out, I like a pure set with the show only. However, I now that some traders go out of their way to get/make a set with all commercial breaks included. Is this purely for nostalgia purposes, or are there other reasons to keep the breaks in? preference
Just curious,

lazygrae 08-03-2006, 09:27 PM If the person making the set uses a non-linear editor like Womble or Video ReDo, commercials-out is fine. If they use a program like DVD Author, or edit commercials on a dvd recorder, I'd rather have the commercials in. Linear editors only allow edit points to be made on I-Frames (about every 15th frame in SP) and this can result in editing out some of the show, or including some of the commercial. Non-linear editors allow one to make precise cuts at any point they choose and accordingly, to nail down the edit perfectly, to the frame.
ajm1972 08-03-2006, 09:28 PM I'm not really into collecting entire sets of shows, but if I were and my standard practice for collecting has always been to see the uncut original network broadcast with commercials as it was shown originally. I only like to collect stuff
from the 1970's to early 80's for the most part so I try and find or already have most things with the old network ads still intact.
One thing I have been doing lately is I've come across some partial network episodes of shows like Family, Barnaby Jones, Fantasy Island, etc. If my partial is at least 30 minutes in length what I'll do is find the syndicated version and graft the two together to make it complete. It's a fun project I must say.
The commercials from the latter 80's to present day are alot to be left desired so I dont care if I receive something network or syndicated from that timeframe.

glockman101 08-03-2006, 09:28 PM I prefer to edit out the commercials, It is irritating to have commercials on tv, I sure don't want them on a dvd.
gilligan fanatic 08-03-2006, 09:38 PM If it is from like 5 to 10 years ago I don't want them, I am still sick of them-lol But since I am so young I missed out on a lot of commercials and I like seeing them sometimes. My favorite thing about Original Airings is the on screen announcer on the end credits saying stay tuned for an all new Barney Miller or something like that.
I prefer to edit out the commercials, It is irritating to have commercials on tv, I sure don't want them on a dvd.
My point exactly, I mean, you change the channel when the adds come on if your watching live tv, so why go out of your way to get them on a dvd?
Although, I can see ajm1972's point of view about the nostalgia aspect, but for me, since most sets out there are from US tv, and I live in the UK, there isn't really a nostalgic element there. Mabey I would think differently if it was a UK show with ad breaks from my childhood.

debwalsh 08-03-2006, 10:22 PM If I'm making discs from recordings that have commercials, I take out the commercials on the discs, but I keep the original recordings. When I was working on my Shadow Chasers set, it was so cool to hear David Hartman's voice announcing the content of the next morning's Good Morning America.
anglemark10 08-03-2006, 11:42 PM I like them in. That way, I'm sure none of the actual episode was accidentally removed along with the commercials. I always leave them in when authoring discs and put chapter points after each break.
TVFactFan 08-04-2006, 02:03 AM If the show is from cable or local syndication then the commercials can be cut out
Dragonbear 08-04-2006, 04:05 AM Detest commericals is probably the lightest way I can explain how
I feel about them. When I get a show or a disc of shows I want
to watch the show straight through. Not have to deal with either
fast forwarding through a commerical or worse, have that "break"
in the show just to have someone try to sell me something that
I wouldn't buy in the first place.
Some people like the commercials, especially the older ones. But
for me, I'd rather have them edited out.
savageamusement 08-04-2006, 04:10 AM :soapbox:
I hate commericals.
hate. Loathe
I hate the interupption. I hate the break in mood- I hate watchign a spooky show, in the dark and then a bunch of dancing pieces of fruit pop out singing.
I hate being pushed to buy things int he middle of a show, I hate the fact shows are edited to fit more in, Like satruday night live, where on E! they are down to 42 mintues of an hour and a half show, so some idiot can try to sell me a new cheeze whiz brand. or a new toy.
I really really hate the ad execs that put the alcohol commericals on, so that kids are reading about drinking seeing "cool peopel" drink, influencing them-
And I dispise that they scheduel toy commericals from 3-5 becuase that is when kids see it the most-instead of using that time, to put DARE ads or abuse warnings.
I really find it terrible that no station has YET to use the broadcast abilities to post things, like missing children alerts, only things that will make money.
And that things liek AMBER alerts aren't AUTOMATICALLY put into a show, where as the newest improved toothpaste is.
There are some comemricals I find funny, or remember fondly- and I have a 3 discs set of commericals, and old ads- I can watch for nostalgia.
But when time is short, and my attention is on something that I choose, let alone PAY for on cable stations, it annoys me, and is disrespectful of the show and my time to have to surf through the crap, and the annoying jingles
To be distracted and brought back to my original focus, all for a buck.
And if they are going to have a cpative audiance, how about using it for the greater GOOD sometime.
The public service announcments per toy ad are about a bazillion to one.
How about using that time, to help a lost kid find their way home, or an abuse wife know a help line.
Instead of where to get the newest go****m playstation game.

Now come on Savage, those commercials and promos are great. Don't you want to watch a show from 1983 and hear that for that night on August 6, there is a expected thunder storm thru the Ohio Valley, plus the fact that little Jenny, missing for two days has been found? The fact that she is now married with 3 kids is unimportant. How about that Superman with Christopher Reeves will be hitting the big screen shortly and promises to be a blockbuster.?
That's nostalgia, my dear girl.

Lamont 08-04-2006, 10:48 AM WITH ORIGINAL COMMERCIALS??? who cares?
i mean to be honest
i have some set with
some without

i NEVER watch them EVEN IF they are there
i just FFWD through them
like 99.99% of people do
i have NEVER gotten and NEVER will get
these people who ONLY want something with the original commercials
WHY? does it make the show better?
and most w/o/c are lesser quality than later syndicated copies

they are a nuisance and bother
lilhave 08-04-2006, 11:24 AM I wonder how many folks with Tivo, when viewing a recorded show, actually get the hots when a commercial goes on. One of the advantages of tivoing something is that you can fast forward thru a commercial. Why anyone want to see a 1982 commercial of Orange Glo, slays me, and of course to see a much younger David Oreck, asking those to take the Oreck challange. Then if you live in samll town America, to see a spot for Joe's used cars from 1979. Joe has been in jail since 1989 for tax evasion and money laundering.

Why do some people dye their hair green? Why do some people put tattoo's all over their body? Why do some people do piercing to every part of their body? To be noticed, to be different, to not to conform, to cause contraversy. If you say blue, they say yellow, no one knows what they believe, they may not know themselves.
Think of it this way. If everyone goes out in the field with a pick axe and a shovel and one only has a plastic spoon, they can't be involved, so they come up with another gimmick. I want a spoonful at a time. The same goes for trading dvds, can't burn, you must tape. Most hate commercials, I love them.

so let me get this right so that I understand
1. you would RATHER have a BAD QUALITY tape of a show with original commericals than have a GOOD QUALITY tape of the show without?
2. you watch the commericals to find out if a washed up sitcom actor might have done a commercial for JOES CAR WASH back in 1977 before they got famous?
3. you then pass this info on to the particular board of that show?
4. and this is supposed to be fun?
we all have our opinions
it just seems as if the end goal here is to be able to say
"GUESS WHAT I FOUND, a 1975 Commercial starring Barry Williams from the brady bunch where he sells Tires!!!!" i just do not see why anyone would trade for a bad qualtiy item (when good quality commercial-less copies exists) and then watch all the commercials looking for one with a washed up star, so that you can have the pleasure of telling others what you saw?
maybe im crazy but shows that i watch

See here is the thing about original airings with commercials, no one can really be choosey about quality especially if it's from 1982. So how clear the copy is really doesn;t matter it's just the fun of seeing old commercials with actors before they became famous or seeing old Network Promos for certain shows.

Many of you know that N.Y. experienced one of the worst heat waves in the history of the city. Temperatures soared to 110, humidty was just as high. My mistake was leaving the house without a hat on as I truly believe the sun baked my brain.
Are you saying a fan of Prince of Bel-Air cares about who did a commercial for the show, or if on the Rosanne show, a commercial was done by Abe Lincoln coming out of the box, hawking tickets to tonight's show at Ford's theater.?

i am a BIG fan of a lot of shows
SANFORD AND SON, i love the show----
BUT if someone has a commercial with LAWANDA PAGE from 1969 doing an ad for AFRO SHEEN on a vhs tape--- 5 of 10 quality--- i dont care
i have NO INTEREST at all in it
i love BARANBY JONES too, but if someone has BUDDY EBSEN in a deodorant commercial from 1964 --- 6 of 10 quality--- they can keep it, that has no interest to me at all
lilhave 08-04-2006, 11:58 AM I think you are more into the commercials from the 1960's and before right?
I have 7 disks of commercials prior to 1970. No particular reason as I do not look at them but have them. Commercials of any period do not interest me. At least commercials from the 50's ere short, all being one minute or less. Now, commercials are 4 or 5 minutes in length. You look at a show because you like the stars, like the story line, there has to be some appeal or attraction. No one and mean no one ever says, "I like this show because they show one helleva commercial"
Harvey
Lamont 08-04-2006, 12:03 PM i can agree with that
i too have some discs just called CELEBRITY COMMERCIALS

now if tvresearcher would do a tape/disc of JUST COMMERCIALS with washed up actors
THAT id like to have!
that way i could pop it in and watch them all at once:wave:
combsisthebest 08-04-2006, 12:16 PM I very much enjoy the older commercials (particularly older promos). It takes me back a few years, and for me they're fun to see. Given a choice between poor quality with commercials and great quality without commercials, I'd go with the great quality without commercials.

I still haven;t found that Military KFC commercial from 1987 or 1988. I did see that old Mcdonald's commercial from 1988 with the half moon and the _"It's Mac Tonight".
RedWhine56 08-04-2006, 12:22 PM WITHOUT commercials. No question. I already have enough shows with old commercials. Admittedly, it's kind of fun to see a young Meredith Baxter doing her Breck commercial. I even have the one where they compare a car to then football player, OJ Simpson (washing out mouth.) But I can only take about two minutes worth of commercials every ten years and I'm CERTAINLY not going to spend my time watching them, looking for now famous actors. Nor do I find old commercials that interesting. And watching a douche commercial is as annoying to me now as it was 15 years ago.
debwalsh 08-04-2006, 03:57 PM I want my shows without commercials, generally speaking. But I've started to collect promos and such as extras to add on to the discs. But there is this part of me that would like to go through all my old Beta tapes and collect the full history of Wendy's commercials with Dave Thomas. Like I have the time for that, but I find the idea amusing. I do like seeing people "before they were stars," and I like seeing some of the old commercial campaigns. It's part of our cultural language.
Even local ones - heck, when I was growing up outside Philly, there was a clothing store with the crappiest commercials ever - this slick-back weaselly looking jerk who'd hawk Krass Brothers Men's Store - like anyone would ever want to admit their suit came from a place called "Krass." But they were funny as hell in a supremely stupid way, and I wouldn't mind seeing one or two of them again.
In my view, commercials exist to sell us something we don't want (why would they have to coax us if we did). They represent the consumerism monster that forces us to buy our kids the latest trainers (sneakers) in order that they don't get bullied at school, or that tries to justify charging unjustifiable prices for dvds.
As traders, we consciously go out of our way to fight back, we decide what will and won't be released on dvd, and give it to each other in the fairest way possible, by trading equally (no cash involved!!)
So it seems totally alien to me that anyone in this game would want a little bit of that monster in their anti-consumerism hobby. Personally, I hate seeing my favorite tv stars doing commercials, it's like they've sold part of their reputation for the sake of a quick buck
But hey, different strokes for different folks, If people like commercials for nostalgic reasons, then fair enough. I don't mind getting sets with ad breaks, just as long as my fastforward button works.

ajm1972 08-04-2006, 09:03 PM A few responses....if it wasnt for commercials you wouldnt be able to see your favorite shows of today or yesteryear unless your fans of Dr. Who or Electric Company, then of course ads dont matter. Commercial advertising sponsors the shows we watch.
People have asked me to edit ads out before, I REFUSE, I dont have time to do it and more power to you if you have time to do that. But some of us take the time to watch the ads and some of us take the time to FF over the ads.
To me it isnt about seeing LaWanda Page in a Church's Chicken commercial that matters, its seeing a Sanford & Son with the old NBC commercials and promos that matters...well at least to me it does. That is like being in a Mr. Peabody and Sherman Wayback machine and getting to relive the show as it originally aired, why do I want to watch a show with annoying graphics flashed on the screen about the next lame show coming up or having the closing credits split so I can hear an announcer say who got shot on the 10:00 news or see the closing credits sped up or a show edited or compressed for time issues so yet MORE COMMERCIALS can be shoved in our faces??
Sorry I dont want cable or syndicated versions of shows because those versions annoy me for the reasons I state. I cant imagine what it's like for a person who worked on a tv show years ago and is proud of what they did, but they cant even show someone they worked on a show unless they pause the closing credits and even then its hard because the screen has been split or something.
I've personally compiled network promos for many different years onto DVD, alot have came off of my old tv shows from u-matic and beta tapes I have. Some of these can be viewed on the TV Party site and in some cases CBS and ABC Television networks has actually paid me to send them footage of stuff like their old network promos which they no longer have. Trust me having network contacts and sources is a great thing and to your benefit because the networks will send you things you want in return, that is what helped build my collection.
I agree alot of the old commercials are as boring as heck to watch, some get repeated over and over again too. But what was cool back in the 60's into early 80's you would essentially only have 2 commercials following a theme song/opening credit break, then 2 to 3 commercials, network promo, station ID for the first 15 minute break, then a couple more before the closing credits. That means you would roughly have 6 commercials in an entire 30 minute program!!!
These days you might have 6 during just one commercial break and then no wonder why we all hate the commercials of today!!
The old network promos, not the commercials are what I am most interested in, because every year it was always the late Ernie Anderson the voice of ABC telling us what was coming up next or the network promo campaigns were different each year too.
I read Lamont's comments he has no interest in commercials, I have no interest in collecting sets of shows, to each is own. But I notice on your rare news items you state they have original ads. I look at alot of the footage that is listed and think back to how I went about acquiring those newscasts, special news events, historic news footage, etc. which cost me alot of work, money and trade bait to get them out of the network archives. I see alot of people enjoy those things, I'm very fortunate to have acquired that stuff, I mean how many people can say they have the newscast from the day they were born (from that era!) which I do because I personally went and got it.
Oh by the way the LBJ State funeral is coming soon for your information. I have a TON of things listed on your want list too but you and others wouldnt want it because it has those annoying commercials and promos, but that is why the fast forward button was invented right!?

ajm1972 08-04-2006, 09:22 PM Solomon,
Is this a commercial from your youth your looking for, I kind of remember this ad but to be honest I dont have much from 1988 unless its some sporting event I taped off the air (i.e. NBA Finals), I think the only thing I might have tv show's from 1988 are last season Magnum PI's with commercials.
I fondly remember the Bobby Darin-like moon guy who did the McDonald's "Its Mac Tonight", I think McDonalds got sued over that ad and of course they got nailed by Krofft Productions over the McDonaldland characters who YOU NEVER SEE ANYMORE on television! Dont you miss Grimace, Hamburglar and Mayor McCheese?
I remember a few years ago saying I wonder if Burger King will ever bring the Burger King back....oh.....sorry I asked.
I'll work on getting Park Place....

Mwah!
lilhave 08-04-2006, 09:40 PM Gee, I thought I did good today. Picked up season 2 of Sgt. Preston in 10.0 quality but I would trade it in a heartbeat for the good Col. doing some stupid ass commercial for chicken. Were they pushing regular, or extra crisp?. To just think, that 60 second spot may be available. Now that's what you call very rare.
Is one for Popeye as rare?
Harvey who is plucking away.

Aj
im not making fun of anyone for what they trade
WHAT I WAS SAYING was that tvresearcher had posted a few statements that i didnt understand
1. prefering BAD quality with commercials over GREAT quality without? dont get it
2. i didnt get why it was so much fun and so cool, to be able to post on the happy days board that u found an old commercial with scott baio? and i still dont
if someone honestly enjoys watching commercials, then to each their own
i just ALWAYS prefer the best quality i can get, with or without
and i cannot understand why someone would prefer the bad quality

Yup it's from my youth, i was in 7th grade and loved it. I can't believe all the Original Airings I been collecting from the 1987-88 era and still haven't come across the commercial

I never said I prefer bad quality, i just said the Quality of the TV show from a Original Network Airing doesn't have to be as GOOD as a TV show from Cable WITHOUT commercials
debwalsh 08-05-2006, 01:42 AM I will say that I'd prefer an original airing over a syndicated airing, even if the image/sound quality is superior on the syndicated airing. Unless I'm guaranteed the syndicated version is uncut. I prefer good quality uncut over pristine image/sound quality that's been edited down. On truly rare stuff that I want, I'll take it any way I can find it.
As for commercials ... I once borrowed a friend's recording of the original airing of North and South, specifically to grab promos for Shadow Chasers, which debuted the week after. The promos were so goofy and out there (and full of current ABC stars, not to mention series producer Ron Howard - it was an early Imagine Entertainment project), I still get a chuckle out of them today.
When people record for me overseas, I ask that they keep commercials intact. I like to see commercials from other countries. I'll never forget watching a tape recorded in Australia in the early '80s, and finding a commercial for an American furniture chain that had just moved into Australia as well. It was just too surreal. :>
crakker_jakk 08-05-2006, 09:50 PM i like commercials if they're from an original airing from 20 years ago or more. if they're any more recent than that, they're just not old enough for me to be nostalgic about.. however, i'd NEVER turn down a set just because it didn't have commercials, they're not THAT important to me..
