Finally decided to watch this one even though I hate it. Didn't realize that was Bobby's brother ("Matt")! HA! Anyway, yes the episode is fairly bad but actually for the era it may have been a good "concept" for a show but of course the chemistry wasn't there and the whole thing fell apart, mostly for casting reasons though. There would have some decent story ideas had this gone anywhere. One thing that struck me was; was it just me or was Ken Berry trying VERY VERY hard to act like Mike Brady? Even tries a lot of the nuances and I found it sort of strange, of course there is only ONE Robert Reed, KEN!

Had this been a real show though I think all three should have been adopted at once. It seems sort of reckless to adopt TWO MORE kids so they could be the Three Musketeers. Not to mention expensive. I think Kellys Rainbow would have been a better name if it went on to be a show, and recast the whole thing except Todd Lookinland (Matt). Todd seemed a lot like Bobby:)

Good call Buddy!

The undertone predjudice concept created by the bigot neighbor Mrs. Payne just didn't do it for me. That kind of stuff is hilarious on a show like All in the Family which was huge in the ratings at that time. But The Brady's were too "morally right" to take on such a challenge. The concept of "Kelly's Kids" might have worked better as a new pilot series and NOT an added "Brady Bunch" episode.

Stud,

Please check my created DVD Scenes Restoration Thread. There is a link inside that you can click on that will take you to where the DVD Scene restoration thread is on the board. (Scroll about halfway down.) You should find it there.

I thought it was a set up for a new pilot that never made it. I would've watched.

It was the pilot for an unsold series. I, too, think that it would have made an
interesting series.

I don't think that the racial prejudice issue is TOO much of a jump. After all, their earlier episodes were about prejudice against people who lisp, people with glasses/braces, homely Molly, and people with big bruised noses. The racial aspect, to me anyway, is just a more socially significant one, but the idea has always been there.

I like the Archie Bunker refrence. When the mom says she makes Archie Bunker look like a liberal.

Yea, I thought it was odd though if they were on rival networks.

Am I the only one who noticed that in the bathrooom scene in Kelly's Kids you can quite clearly see a toilet tank?

Kelly was the surname of Ken Berry and Brooke Bundy's characters. The name "Kelly's Kids" was to keep the smooth flowing sound of a title, just like "Brady Bunch".

One thing that I like about the episode known as "Kelly's Kids" is that it was one of the two episodes that made references to Jewish people. When Mrs. Paine wanted the Kellys to know how far she was from being a bigot, she said with a certain degree of sarcasm "I am even corgel to the Shaperos on the next block!" The other episode that had a Jewish reference was the one in which Marcia received a Shofare from her great-aunt Jenny. Jenny explained that she had gotton it from a famious Rabbi on one of her trips to Isreal. There were a few other episodes that featured people with Jewish sounding names, but nothing about them being Jewish was mentioned or even implied.

When Kelly's kids episode comes on....I change the channel. That episode is one I cannot stand.

It must be a Ken Berry thing....when the episode of Andy Griffith comes on and Ken Berry invites that Italian family to live on his farm.......I ....again...change the channel !:)

Just curious, is Shapiro a Jewish name? sounds Italian to me.

I love the Kelly's Kids episode, which was indeed supposed to be a pilot for a new spin-off. I also enjoyed TAGS more after Barney left. I loved Don Knotts so much, but I just prefer TAGS without Barney. I adored Mayberry RFD as well.

You can't be serious, Barney was what made TAGS worth watching. Without him the show went downhill and Warren Ferguson certainly didn't help matters. Watching TAGS without Barney would be like watching Star Trek without Mr. Spock, it just wouldn't be the same.

Yes. You will find lots of physicians with the last name of Shapiro who are Jewish.

Mrs. Kelly (Brooke Bundy) played Rebecca on Days Of Our Lives, who died in a plane crash and Diana Taylor, R.N. on General Hospital, whose character was murdered. The African-American youngster was seen a few years later on The New Mickey Mouse Club along with the future Blair Warner from The Facts Of Life.....Lisa Whelchel (sp?).

Wow, Don, that's scary! Did she have some kind of battle with the producers, or did she just ask to be written out? Come to think of it, that sounds like something Sherwood Schwartz wanted to do with Robert Reed's character!

Welcome to the boards, by the way!

I saw this episode today and thought it was WAY off what The Brady Bunch was all about. Yes, it displayed the true meaning of family blah blah blah - but it just didnt seem right to be cast as an "episode" of the Brady Bunch if you get my drift.

Supposedly, another series was made in the 1980s called "Together We Stand", that was about a family with a couple of adopted kids, one was black and one was Asian. The show starred Elliott Gould and Dee Wallace Stone. Has anyone ever seen this show?

I barely remember that one.

Yeah, I looked it up and it aired in 1986-87. Then they killed off Elliott Gould's character and just had Dee Wallace Stone as a widowed mom trying to raise all the kids. The title changed from Together We Stand to Nothing Is Easy. The revamped version didn't fare any better than the original, apparently.

I liked the "Kelly's Kids" episode, even though it should have been given a chance to start off on its own, and not as an episode of another series. And The Brady Bunch was never very good at tackling contemporary social issues. It was one of the last unrealistic squeaky-clean sitcoms that were popular in the 50s and 60s, so even in its own time the show was dated. Some of the issues hinted at in Kelly's Kids just didn't fit for them.

Even looking past the Brady thing, the episode was pretty weak. But I still enjoy watching it sometimes, just because Brooke Bundy was so cute.
