I know I used to have this obsession to bite my nails down as far as they could when I was in middle school. During school, I wouldn't even know I was doing it! Then I got braces and I didn't bite, but unfortunately, now when I'm nervous, I rip the skin around my fingers. :( And I have such nice hands, now I let my nails grow and I have loooong fingers, but they look terrible cause of the skin. Anyone else?

I don't bite my nails, but I do have a habit of ripping them off.

I've never bitten my nails. I hate when people do it around me. I have a relative whose fingers are always in her mouth. I don't say anything, but it makes me sick. Sometimes, it looks like she's got half her hand in her mouth.

I know some people can't help it, but watching them bite their nails sickens me too, although not quite as bad as seeing someone cut their toenails. Talk about nasty! :barf:

When I was in High School and College I use to bite my nails, it was a bad habit. But since graduating from College I started to get manicures and pedicures, so now I've kicked that habit.

I bite my nails. Sometimes I'll go for a week or so without biting them, and they'll grow a little, and then I'll bite them again, and they'll be as short as they were before.

Yeah, I bite off my nails. But it's not a SERIOUS SERIOUS SERIOUS habit with me. I don't bite them chronically, and I don't bite my thumbnails (I trim them with a nail clipper and nail file to smooth the edges). My nails look nice and all that. Sometimes they just look like I trimmed off the nails with my teeth. It used to be a lot worse when I was a kid, so I guess I'm growing out of it now.

I've always bitten them. I think it must be some kind of female trait in my family. My grandma, aunt and mom all bite their nails. I'm actually trying to keep them nice right now. They are the longest they've been in years.

I bite my nails when they get to long. That's how I cut them, but I don't do it in front of people.

nope, nope, nope. i did when i was little, but i haven't in years. i always have people telling me what glorious nails i have, they're all long and strong. nail biting is gross...seriously think of all the bacteria and **** that's on your nails. and besides i wouldn't be able to bite them evenly, i'd end up having to use a nail clipper afterward to make the edges straight again.

No. I don't bite my nails.

I remember one time when I was about 11 or 12 I wanted to "try" biting my nails just to see what the buzz was all about. I recall seeing my peers biting their nails. I tried it but couldn't keep it up. It felt unsanitary and nasty for me. I never did it again.

Riping the skin around your nails is a form of self-mutilation. The reason I know that is because in a counseling support group for individuals who went through certain traumatic experiences it [riping skin around fingers, etc. = form of self-mutilation] was mentioned (7 years ago) by one of the two therapists. Please note I am not judging anyone by the way. I just thought it might be helpful to know that if there was anyone who didn't know that.

To answer the question, yes, I have a bad habit of biting my nails. I wish I didn't, but it's been a bad habit for so many years.
Really??

No, biting the ends of my fingers never appealed to me.
And as safety pin said, there's a lot of bacteria living under fingernails- best to just cut them the regular way (with sissors).

I bite my nails when I was at my young ages, but I don't do it anymore. I cut my nails with a nail clipper today.
