View Full Version : Ever worry about your collection being stolen?
justins5256 07-23-2006, 01:06 PM This is the thought that wakes me up in the middle of the night...
Recently, there have been a number of burglaries in my neighborhood. As a result, one of my greatest fears is that someone may break into my house and steal my collection. I suppose I didn't worry so much when the majority of my movies/shows were on VHS. After all, who would steal 1500 VHS tapes? It would be a truckload. But, now that most of my good stuff is on DVDR and in books, it would be a piece of cake for someone to grab those books and make off with about a third of my collection. I couldn't possibly put a dollar value on my collection, but I know for a fact that a lot of the discs I have are irreplaceable. Basically, movies and shows I could NEVER get again. Not to mention all the time I've spent painstakingly converting every tape to disc. Those of you who have traded with me know what a perfectionist I am and know that I don't just copy everything over on some crappy homedeck. I put a lot of time and care into each and every project. Hell, I don't even own a homedeck. But I digress...
Anyone else ever had similar fear/concerns or actually had their collection lifted?
Justin
passionsfan79 07-23-2006, 01:11 PM Naw Im not really worried about my collection being stolen. I never really even thought about it eint stolen before.

There is no robberies in my neighborhood I guess that's why the rent is so high. So I never worry about anything thing like that

I think a robber would me more focused on TV"s and DVD Players and Stereo than VHS tapes and DVD's

You really don't think they would take a book of mainstream/burned DVDRs and Xbox games...
digitalmonkey 07-23-2006, 01:50 PM Make backup copies of your most prized discs and keep them in a safety deposit box at your bank. It's fairly inexpensive when you consider the peace of mind it will provide you.

Is that what you do?-lol
masterblooregard 07-23-2006, 03:00 PM LOL it's not that crazy. I sometimes imagine if say my house caught on fire, and my dvd collection...destroyed. That'd be pretty horrible. I mean sure, there are more valuable things in my home that I should be worried about, but my DVD colletion is still pretty high up there (sad?)
digitalmonkey 07-23-2006, 03:50 PM Is that what you do?-lol
No, I keep them at a friend's house who lives in a high-rent district. Nobody ever gets robbed in a high-rent disctrict. Criminals don't target the rich.-lol
marvelousmarcus 07-23-2006, 05:08 PM It would serve them right to steal my collection. It was a real B---CH, to get them up the stairs in our house and just about did me in!
Lex Luthor 07-23-2006, 06:13 PM Occasionally because I am in a basement suite and the dvd binders are easy to grab. Uninsurable too.
loren 07-23-2006, 06:43 PM i live in about the lowest crime area in the country
we hardly ever lock our door, and i leave the keys in the cars and motorcycles all the time
so im not very worried about that
im more comcerned with fire or tornado
i have the original of every disc i own, at a friends house just in case
the rest of the crap is easy to replace with insurance money
so i wouldnt loose anything with either fire or wind or theft
Lex Luthor 07-23-2006, 08:39 PM Hey Loren
No one locks their doors? Whats your addy? lol:lol:

That's what I thought of, a fire not someone breaking in and taking my collection-lol

RedWhine56 07-23-2006, 10:58 PM I'm sorry you've had many burglaries in your area. But as someone mentioned before, DVDS are not the kind of thing most burglars are after. Electronics, cameras, jewelry, cash, etc. are more valuable to them than your/my dvd collection. Not saying it wouldn't happen, just that the chances are very slim, since most burglars steal not for the item itself, but for the cash they can hock it for. And a full set of "your favorite show here" is not worth very much (if anything) to pawnbrokers/fences.
OTOH, with "acts of God" such as fire, flood, etc., the chance is there. The nifty thing about all things digital is that they are easily copied. We have a safe deposit box where I keep backups of our financial data & images of important documents. (It's badly in need of an update, I have to admit, tho!) I also have backups on DVD of various things that I keep at my mother's house. But no, I've not stored backups of my DVD collection offsite. I suppose if I had endless time, I might do so, but I don't (have endless time.)
Lamont 07-23-2006, 11:10 PM if someone breaks into my house
to rob me
im PRETTY SURE
they would go for things like TVs, JEWELRY, STEREOS etc etc etc
NOT dvd-rs of old tv shows!!!
UNLESS OF COURSE, the robber is some disgruntled trader who is out to get a bunch of free discs!!!!

i guess there is a chance of a person targeting someone with a decent list
getting their address through a trade, or sale, etc
good thing you have 7 dogs on the front porch, and all that sheep crap to walk through from the dirt road to the house, they likely would fall first before they even got to the dogs
Lamont 07-23-2006, 11:47 PM ha ha ha
PLUS dont forget my front yard is heavilly populated by COWS
and not your ordinary cows
mine are purposely infected with MAD COW DISEASE to make em good and angry and ready to attack!!!
:cow: :cow: :cow: :cow:
and of course there are always 4 or 5 intoxicated hillbillies passed out in the various broken down cars in my front yard
and they always have their shotguns with em!

I have my binders hidden in my wadrobe. Not much chance of anyone managing to get into my house.
T-Greg 07-24-2006, 12:03 PM Most criminals are looking to make a quick exit, so unless they know you're going to be away for awhile, they are looking mostly for small things with a big price tag such as jewelry. Next would be electronics and anything else they could sell easily on the street that nets some pretty good bucks. DVD's are fairly cheap and not worth the time for most criminals. Homemade videos would probably never be targeted, unless you're Tommy Lee or Pam Anderson, who made pretty interesting movies together. Before I forget, I need to tell Lamont to lock those homemade sheep videos in a vault before it's too late!

My friend was robbed last year while he was at work. They took his two guns, playstation, all his playstation games and they actually went through all his dvds (retails and burns) and picked out what they wanted and left what they didn't. Then, they made themself some food and left the dirty dishes in the sink. He swears they did some other x-rated thing but really he can't prove that (he doesn't remember a bandana laying on his floor with a white stain on it, ewww!) It sounds like I'm joking but I'm not.

That's surprising, never thought a Robber would want Retail DVD's-lol

I know someone whose car was burglarized and the thief actually went through this person's CD wallet and only took the CDs they (the thief) were interested in. My mother's car was broken into about two years ago and they made off with her Mace spray and a pack of gum!
This is exactly my point. Yes, perhaps a professional thief burglarizing a home would only take things of easy resell value. But, people sometimes steal things for reasons God only knows. Money isn't always the only motivation. Anyone who thinks otherwise is very naive…

Only if they had them on file or they had a suspect. The prints didn't come back with anything and they never had a suspect. I know this sounds like i made it up but my friend is one of those people that something this crazy could only happen to him.

So I didn't want to get into my stupidity but here goes. I left my car window open last Sunday from 3:30 am to 3:30 PM on a busy street in Chicago in not one of the best areas. When I went to leave at 3:30 pm and realized it I was shocked. 1) that I had done probably the stupidest thing I've ever done and 2) that nothing was stolen. Not that someone hadn't been in the car. My bowling shoes which were on the back seat were on the sidewalk next to my car. Other than that, nothing looked like it was touched. CDs in place, old cell phone in the glove compartment, radio untouched, and my ipass (little box that automatically pays your tolls on the highway so you don't have to have cash on hand and don't have to stop) was still there. CRIMINALS ARE MORONS! Obviously someone went in there looking for stuff and was too stupid to know what to take (mainly just the ipass).

You're right about that. It's no wonder they have to steal for a living. You always hear about dumb criminal stories. Here's the best I've ever heard. An attempted rapist is on trial. The victim is on the witness stand testifying. The prosecutor asks her "What did the defendant tell you"? The victim replies' "He said if I opened my mouth, I'll kill you bitch". At which point, the defendant stands up and shouts out "That's not what I said. I said "I'd kill you, you f'ing bitch".
lilhave 07-24-2006, 06:08 PM I'm a lucky guy, living in a low crime area. New York City hasn't had a theft or murder in years I don't count kids swiping apples from the pushcart or old lady Moody, who ate three grapes while on line at Pathmark.

if someones steals dvds
they can take them and pawn them for 3 or 4 bucks each
not worth it

I still think DVD's would be the further thing from a robber's mind

That sounds like someone who was just messing with you. Not a real thief. Our first house was on the golf course. One morning, we woke up to find our patio furniture on the golf course, not in our yard. The table was way out on the golf course & all the chairs were pulled up to it. Same thing with our neighbors on both sides. Three sets of patio tables & chairs, sitting out on the golf course. I thought it was pretty funny.
