Hopefully, we can a meaningful debate here and it won't be TOO one-sided even if this is the Brady Board.
Anyway, I was raised on the Brady Bunch, but as an adult I have been "discovering" new favorites of old shows on dvd. Even if I was not brought up on certain series; like "That Girl" I found recently and it has rapidly become a fave of mine. However, my encounter with the Partridges was not nearly as positive. I thought the show was TERRIBLE. I was shocked at how much I hated it. Not only (IMO) is it not in league with the Brady Bunch, based on Season One, the Partridge Family is fairly HORRIFIC! I was surprised because through the course of time these two shows have been seen as competitors of sorts but in my mind it's not even close and is almost embarrassing how bad the "Partridge Family" was. How do you feel?

I enjoy both shows, but never understood why people want to compare them. It's like comparing apples and oranges. The Partridge plots were much more serious; the Bradys were more light-hearted.

Like when Danny was drafted? That show made me want to cry. I was sitting there with my DVD Boxset I had purchased and got some tears on it:( Thank JESUS for eBay. And even the songs were so horrible.....

I did like the chemistry between Reuben and Danny, they should have had a show of their own without any singing, and a totally different backdrop; but as it stands I think the Partridge Family is one of the worst shows yet I have come across in terms of trying something new.

Anyone ever see the Saturday Night Live show that had Susan Dey on it? They did a "Brady Bunch vs Partridge Family battle of the bands"...was pretty funny.

I also enjoy both shows and have all the seasons released on DVD so far. The Partridge Family of course was much more focused on the music, sometimes even more than the plotlines, but both shows are a classic in their own right. To me, The Partridge Family was a little more "in-tune" with the younger people of the time, the mentioned the word "Sex" several times during the run of the show, and in one episode even had Chris and Tracy (the youngest in the family) reading over Ruban's adult magazines

Yea, I could see the more adult themes, but as far as music, maybe b/c I play guitar but the performaces were so so far off from being realistic it was nausiating:)

I was a fan of THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY during its original run, while I didn't begin
watching THE BRADY BUNCH until a few years ago. I like both shows, but I
agree that comparing them is like "apples and oranges" ... not so much for the
plots as for the emphasis on music in the former. In fact, the two shows share
very little in common. One is about a single mother raising two teenagers and
three younger children (although one could argue that Reuben Kincaid was
somewhat of a father figure, I suppose, mostly to Danny); while the other
is about a husband and wife raising six kids, of various ages, from previous
marriages. So, they're really quite different.

Still I can see the comparisons; same general era, young kids singing, family entertainment.

Of course that wasn't as good as the Green Acres episode where Arnold the pig got drafted !

I've always liked the Brady Bunch better, The Partridge Family bored me when it came time for their singing. I did like the Partridge's theme song, Come on get happy.

I would have to disagree. The Partridge Family was great comedy, especially in the comic sense and timing of the young Danny Bonaduce, David Cassidy and the actor who played Reuben Kincaid, as well as legitimate comedy writing.

I don't think you could classify the Brady Bunch as a true classic comedy in that regard.

I would agree the Brady Bunch in many ways is more family entertainment than a true "comedy" however, I'm surprised a fan would even classify the Partridge Family as a great comedy. All in the Family? Yes. Partridge Family? No way. Not to mention this topic was more or less geared toward the arguement of which was the better show all around and the comedy elements weren't really a major issue.

Brady Bunch, because I've seen more of it. However, I did bump into Danny Bonaduce by chance at the Universal Citywalk in Hollywood when I was on a CA vacation in 2001. I got his autograph and my picture taken with him. :D

OH Nuts!

I certainly didn't hate the PF but I too liked the BB much much more. What turned me off about the PF was that the Cowsills didn't get to do the series, and they were the group the show was based on. Also the PF was nowheres near as good as the Cowsills--I thought the PF's singing was very tired and the idea of Keith Partridge as a hearthrob makes me giggle. (Although I do have to admit I like Shirley Jones--but everyone else in the show was nothing to write home about)

So the short of it....give me the Brady's anytime--the shows, the specials, anything--you name it.

I always prefered the Partridge Family, mainly because of David Cassidy. He was cute, sexy, funny, & could sing and play the guitar. What more could a girl want? lol!

Brady Bunch is the better show. The whole Brady Bunch series is out on DVD, while with the Partridge Family they stopped DVD's after season two. That has to tell ya something right there. David Cassidy is a good singer, the first three Partridge Family albums are pretty good. After that, the music got stale. The PF TV show was never much to write home about, the songs are what carried the episodes, especially during the first two seasons. But both shows (BB & PF) are time capsules from the early 70's.

Bulletin Board is a very good album. I have the best of both worlds because I think PF and BB are just terrific. :happyface
I hope season 3 and 4 of PF are released soon.

Exactly. The PF's music got stale because they were ripping off the personna of The Cowsills. Musically, the Cowsills were vastly more talented and IMO a VASTLY UNAPPRECIATED GROUP; I wished they had gotten a variety show.

You could give me the whole PF series and I would gladly trade it in for 1-2 eps of Patty Duke. Or a Cowsill's concert.

It could be that the partridge family had more adult appeal or something, but in its initial run Partridge Family did much better than the Brady Bunch, yet Brady Bunch did far better in syndication and DVD sales.

Brady Bunch had more appeal to younger kids who on Friday nights were often being cared for by baby sitters and the baby sitters wanted to watch something else. That's my brother's theory anyway.

The problem with having such a young core audience is that they don't always get to choose what they watch.

I'm watching the PF DVDs.......i'm in Season 4..........and yea, by season 4, the show is falling apart big time, even more than the Bradys were in season 5 (which the first half is still good by Brady standards).

It wouldn't have been quite so funny if Susan Dey had actually sung!

While the Partridges (the studio version at least) produced fine bubblegum pop and pleasing vocals, at least the Bradys were genuine when they sang, it was the kids and not David Cassidy and studio session vocalists

They also showed Tracy topless twice. They never sowed Cindy topless though they were about the same age.

On that subject, it is kind of odd that today some people make such a big deal about that, but back then it was no big deal. When did that happen?

The fact that they've never done a true reunion show for Partridge Family (only cast get togethers) where as Brady Bunch has had numerous reunions shows that people were ready to say goodbye to Partridge Family but not Brady Bunch.
