View Full Version : Is this forum a shill for TV Land?
bencasey 07-12-2006, 11:03 AM Why do I keep seeing all these posts, TV Land this, TV Land that? TV Land sucks. How about some posts about ALTV where they actually show programs that haven't been constantly on for the last 30, 40, 50 years? Give me a break. If one didn't know better and they came upon this board they might think TV Land was good instead of the crapfest it's become. Let's see, ALTV shows F Troop, Chico and the Man, Welcome Back Kotter, Courtship of Eddie's Father, Color Honeymooners, My Favorite Martian and other shows that haven't been on a million times. Sounds more interesting to me than the 6,000th cycle of Beaver, Andy, Bonanza, ad nauseum. Hope they pay you guys well.
robyrob 07-12-2006, 11:26 AM what the hell is ALTV?
Pavan 07-12-2006, 11:37 AM We cover TV Land a lot because they make a lot of schedule changes each month and it also has stunts. We cover AmericanLife TV, but it is not a well-known channel and they don't change their schedule much (and no stunts either)...maybe once a year they change their lineup, and when they do we DO cover it.

ooh ooh ooh I can answer that one!!!! It's because TV LAND is one of the more popular Cable TV networks that airs TV Shows and since it's a General Forum for TV Topics, that's why you see TV LAND Topics. I started topics about TBS and ABC Family in the past but those networks don't air TV shows the way TV land does. And Not a lot of people on this board have ALTV which is why you never seen anyone talk about it

Just cause you have seen the show six thousand times doesn't mean other people are sick of it... and your forgetting about other shows that don't get show alot (Wings, Night Court, Benson, 227)... And who exactly makes you watch and look at threads relating to tv land? no one so if you don't like it avoid it...

gilligan fanatic 07-12-2006, 12:51 PM I noticed you hang around the general sitcoms board a lot. You should venture out into one of the other boards, a lot of non TV Land talk and stuff about the actual shows and not the networks happen there.
BTW, out of curiosity do you have the Don Rickles Variety Show or the Don Rickles Sitcom from 72'?

Not everyone has ALTV...i used to get it here, then it was taken off. TVLand is more visible to members here.
WalrusIsPaul 07-12-2006, 05:49 PM altv is the former goodlife channel, and although i like the fbi on there,,harry o,77 strip,,its about time to revamp it,,ive had the channel for 2yrs and it STILL the same.at least tv land does add diff shows,be it the same shows,at least they add some

I think he has it but doesn't really get involved in tape trading unless he really wants something you have.

Sharop 07-12-2006, 06:46 PM When I've been on holiday in America and watched TV Land, I've always thought it to be very good. It's because of TV Land that I got to see Cheers, Family Ties and Wings for the first time - not to mention Three's Company, The Andy Griffith Show and Sanford and Son.
I'd make sure I watched it every evening at my grandparents' house. I really enjoyed TV Land.

Why would you laugh at someone's ignorance at not knowing what a network was? That is so cruel of you.

i can honestly say that i have NEVER heard of "ALTV" and I have never lived anywhere that "American Life" network was offered by my cable provider (currently Time Warner digital in Southern Ohio)
Ireneparalegal 07-12-2006, 08:25 PM You beat me to it Rob!!! LMAO
Chelsea 07-12-2006, 10:04 PM Not only is it offered here, but until last year, we got it as a analog/digital double.
(The digital was dropped in favor of the analog).

Of course, this is the same town that airs RFD-TV (Google/Wiki it)

Personally, I preferred the channel when they called themselves Goodlife....of course, I REALLY preferred the old Nostalgia moniker.

Brian Damage 07-12-2006, 10:30 PM TV Land has gone downhill in recent years, but overall, I still like seeing shows like What's Happening, Good Times and Sanford & Son. They might air the episodes a million times, but I don't get to sit in front of my tv every night, so I miss some episodes. Some episodes, I can watch over and over again.

I enjoy those shows too. That's why I have the complete runs of all 3 of them on DVD, uncut, commercial free and with no network bugs on them. I can watch them any time I want. Too bad TV Land can't show series that aren't so readily available in a superior form.

Then why complain??? you have them available anytime you want.

I never watched any of those 3 shows, but yeah, at least they are not that common as far as long running shows go.

I would LOVE if TV Land added those three shows.
I don't like many shows from the 70s, the only Norman Lear show that I would make a point to watch is Sanford and Son.....Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, Chico and the Man, and Barney Miller are alright.
What's Happening and Cheers :barf: (WH especially)

I agree with you. 50s and 60s shows are much better than anything from the 70s and forget anything that came after that. Murphy Brown is about the only decent sitcom in the last 30 years.
Mr. Television 07-16-2006, 11:27 AM The 70's had the best sitcoms IMO and I have no problems with TV Land airing them. Alice and ODAAT would be great pickups and their's a lot of 70's dramas I'd like to see again. I wish they would have some variety though and air shows from all decades from the 70's and before.
I do wish TV Land would start airing some rare shows every once in awhile though. I would love to finally see December Bride, Topper, and Farmer's Daughter. Out of the dramas I'd like to finally see Highway Patrol, Naked City and The Defenders.,
TVFactFan 07-16-2006, 12:55 PM I received a ep of Highway Patrol and My Mother The Car and fell asleep INSTANTLY!!!-lol

Arby1 11-29-2006, 02:58 PM I admit that I enjoy many of the overshown shows. Would be nice to see old Smothers Brothers, Phil Silvers shows and more. I agree. There are plenty of quality, intelligent & really funny sitcoms/variety out there that have yet to find exposure.

Dear Ben,
I live in Canada and I don't get any of the channels that have been mentioned on this thread. In fact, TV Land has its own Canadian channel which, believe it or not, is a lot worse than its US counterpart. Otherwise, I'd "shill" for it myself. For sitcom fans, it features regular airings of "Batman", "Petticoat Junction", "Happy Days", "Mary Tyler Moore" and (are you sitting down?) "Joanie Loves Chachi"---and nothing else! I also agree with you that 1950s and 1960s shows are better than anything that's been seen since. I watch or tape many of these classic series on a variety of different cable specialty channels, including "My Favorite Martian", "Family Affair", "Here's Lucy", "Chico and the Man", and "Courtship Of Eddie's Father". (For details about where and when they're on, look for my episode guides on their individual message boards. ) On digital cable, which you can get for a few extra bucks, along with TV Land Canada, there's another station called DejaView where you can catch popular series like "Three's Company" and "MASH", along with great 1960s classics like "Beverly Hillbillies", "Green Acres", "Hogan's Heroes", "Dick Van Dyke", and "Gilligan's Island". So maybe the solution to your problem is simple: either move to Canada or get a half-decent satellite that picks up Canadian channels. Either way, you won't be sorry.

You're close. "Joanie Loves Chachi" airs on TV Land Canada twice a week, weekends at 12:30. Here are the upcoming airings:
Saturday December 9 12:30 pm

Joanie's term paper is identical to that of another student.
Sunday December 10 12:30pm
My Dinner With Chachi
Chachi lives to regret kidding Joanie about her cooking.
Enjoy!

Twice a Week is still many for a 17 ep Show. JLC shouldf only be part of a One Year wonder Marathon since it' so Short-lived
Jack1000 12-01-2006, 02:59 AM I still like MOST of TV Land,
However they do need to dump the reality specials. ("I Pity The Fool?"....UGGHHHH) and try to go back to their 50's-70's roots that made TV Land special for classic sitcom fans. Believe it or not, when TV Land began in Fall 1996, ALL of their programs were shown uncut and the only commercials that they had were the old classic TV commercials called "Retromercials." Than in the fall of 1997, TV Land switched to a conventional commercial network. At that point, they started getting edited versions of shows and it has been the same since.
Not a big fan of their movies either. With Premium cable, DVD's, On-Demand, people can see thousands of movies uncut and commercial free. Even TCM on many standard cable services shows movies uncut. Go back to the 50's-70's sitcoms that were the foundation of the network. Who wouldn't like to see uncut content? But that would only be possible IF a premium channel or a channek like a TCS. (Turner Classic Sitcoms?) was developed on standard cable/dish service that would show uncut commercial free 50-70's sitcoms. That's what true classic tv fans who grew up with these legendary sitcoms deserve.
TV Land needs more variety in it's weekend programs. It seems like there are nothing but Westerns on the weekends. I would like to see The Odd Couple and The Bob Newhart Show returned to the schedule!

Yes, too damm long for westerns to be on during the weekend. Like you said their should be a mixup during the afternoon not just 7 hours of gunsmoke
bencasey 12-02-2006, 03:45 AM Bob Newhart Show is up to 4th season on DVD and will probably all come out soon. Odd Couple will most likely also come out completely. Why would anyone care about cut airings on TV unless they are too cheap to buy the DVDs? How about airing stuff that will never come out?
friendsfan77 12-02-2006, 08:49 AM Why would anyone care about cut airings on TV unless they are too cheap to buy the DVDs? How about airing stuff that will never come out?
Some people cant afford to have a kajillion shows on DVD all the time. There are several shows I personally havent seen in several years or at all that are on DVD. I'd rather see reruns first, before buying a DVD release. I'd be mad if I bought a release only to find out I dont really like the show. Not to mention there are a few situations like Mama's Family season 1, which has cut syndicated copies on its DVD package anyways.
Though I do agree with you completely that it'd be nice to see some variety on TVLand and that it'd be great if lesser-seen shows could get some airtime.

I agree,
The other thing is, sometimes it can take 6 months to a year (or more) to wait for seasons of a show to be released to DVD. Sometimes shows stop in mid-series for DVD release. (Odd Couple for example may take a LONG time for season 2-5 to come out.) I heard Time Life only bought the rights to Season 1, BUT the DVD producer said that he is working on seasons 2-5. I don't know if that means that TL will get seasons 2-5, or will they give the rights to Paramount for the remaining seasons. On Bob Newhart Show they have done pretty well. It is CERTAINLY better to have the uncut versions of the shows we like on DVD. But for those who can't afford to shell out money repeatedly for disks, the alternative if the edited shows aren't on is nothing. That's the problem. Why not for instance put Odd Couple and Bob Newhart back on TV Land in the interim of waiting for the DVD seasons to be complete?
This accomplishes two things: it creates an awareness of the show to fans who want to see it again. AND it could promote stronger sales of DVD releases when a show's season comes out because people will see the TV Land edited versions and long for the uncut shows on DVD. In my view, that's a better alternative than 5-7 hours of weekend Gunsmoke.
Jack
