View Full Version : Even I didn't know about these things
gilligan fanatic 06-30-2006, 10:06 PM This is the only info I could find about this was at the IMDB.
In 1962, Alan Hale starred in an unsold pilot for a proposed CBS sitcom called "Mighty O". The plot revolved around the adventures of a couple of veteran petty officers on-board a Coast Guard vessel "Ortega" hence the nickname "The Mighty O".
Imagine if that had been sold, maybe it would have been someone else as the Skipper

Here is one for Jim Backus
In 1960, he starred in the first pilot for the CBS sitcom, "Father of the Bride". The pilot was tossed onto the scrap heap and reshot. When the series finally hit the network in 1961, he was replace by Leon Ames.

I wouldn't be surprised if your collection of GI and related things is the most extensive in the world.

Someone else as the skipper ? can you imagine another actor as the skipper? I can think of only one other actor that could have done it and thats ernest borgnine, but I think he was doing mchales navy at the time wasnt he?
gilligan fanatic 09-18-2006, 01:34 PM Well I located a copy of Mighty O, I will let you all know when it comes in. Also I found episodes of GI with Original Commercials.
Do you know what year for the GI episodes? If it's the originals it would put my cut episodes paranoia to rest.

I honestly have no idea, I just know WOC is with original commercials
I am getting them from this person http://mywebpages.comcast.net/tomkle/
Thanks for the info gf. I'll drop him a line.
gilligan fanatic 09-25-2006, 07:08 PM ph1! you will be amazed when you read this http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=183801
And pictures from the Mighty-O will soon be in my GF is Proud to Present thread. I didn't realize that show was a comedy, I had a feeling it was a drama but it isn't. Reminds me a lot of McHales Navy
I am a little amazed. I didn't think the opening titles would have been different.
Have you had time to see if there is any extra footage from the original airings compared to the DVD release.

I didn't either, I wonder why I don't remember ever reading about it being different.
I'll check it out tomorrow, I got to work as soon as I am done with school today.
gilligan fanatic 09-29-2006, 01:25 PM This may sound dumb, but I figured the easiset way to see if there was any missing scenes would be to edit out the commercials. They run same length has the DVD, so you can now rest ph1!, the DVDs are completly uncut.
I've never liked that idea because it's just way to easy to adjust the timing of the DVD's. Over 25 minutes it'd be near impossible to pick up the change in the sound and vision. I have some GI on tape and used the picture in picture function on the tv to view both the tape and the dvd versions at once to pick up cut scenes. I was forever pausing the tape to allow the dvd to catch up.
gilligan fanatic 09-30-2006, 09:00 PM Good point, I will try to go through it sometime soon. I honestly am not that good at remembering some scenes so I am going to try to write down every scene on both of them. That might be the easiet thing
I'm pretty sure you'd notice something you hadn't seen before. I reckon there'd probably be at least a minutes worth missing.
gilligan fanatic 10-01-2006, 09:42 AM I am going to try to watch an episode tonight when I get off work. I will let you know what I find out tomorrow afternoon
gilligan fanatic 12-21-2006, 04:33 PM Here is another pilot I didn't know about
This is right after the Good Guys ended and was originaly made for the 1971-1972 season for CBS.
"Scared Stiff" 30 min. Producers: Garry Marshall and Jerry Belson. The Adventures of two bumbiling detectives played by Bob Denver and Warren Berlinger
Source: Unsold Television Pilots Vol1 1: 1955-1976 by Lee Goldberg
cmcb06 12-21-2006, 07:10 PM Scared Stiff, sounds like a spin-off of the 50's Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis, Paramount Comedy Classic Scared Stiff. THat would be cool to see.
EmpressDR 12-24-2006, 04:43 PM :jar: preservation of GI star's early efforts.
I guess you already have the film Hometown Story on cheap $1 DVD. Marilyn Monroe is a secretary. Alan gives her the eye! :ladiesman
Alan has a big co-starring role as the star's best friend. He was swell --smoking a pipe, though, as a newspaperman. Really great character role for him, and he looked sweet holding the little dog at the end.
:loveya:

TV Knowledge Fan 12-27-2006, 04:50 PM ...was originally financed by General Motors (hence the "big business IS your friend" angle), and filmed at Hal Roach Studios. MGM released it as a "B" feature in 1951, and it would have been forgotten had it not been for...well, dierctor Arthur Pierson had known and used her in one of his earlier films, and cast her in this one, to give her "one more credit" for her portfolio. Alan Hale was pretty good in that one as well. I wish Time-Warner would give it an "official" DVD release...every time I see it on a "dollar DVD", I get that "canned music" over the opening credits {if it's in "public domain", what are you guys afraid of??}.
