he mentioned in the first episode he talked abt the YMCA and why it was cheaper to stay there. He went to an L.A. tech college to study being a chef. Sooooo, what did he do for a living?

as the series moved on he had odd jobs here and there. Not really any on the first two seasons though. When Jack tried to get a loan they said his father was to rich so maybe he got some from his parents?

it made me wonder how he was going to pay one-third of rent, the phone, etc.

I don't know much about the details, but wasn't he retired military? Don't they get some kind of income?

That's what made the decision to let him movein so strange because he didn't have a job-lol So it did make it seem like they had other intentions besides him helping out with the rent in the beginning of the series

Janet told him, you will be responsible for payment of rent, the phone, etc. that's what made me ask the question.

I think that maybe through LA Tech, he was hired to do catering jobs? And we just never saw any of it happen? That's what I was always lead to believe.

Realistically, Jack would have been out on his ass for non-payment of rent and bills.

Sitcoms are full of shows with characters who either don't work or work at mysterious jobs that no one knows about or live in apartments and houses they couldn't possibly afford.

I think the apartment they had was actually one of the more realistic. It was pretty small and had just enough room for the three.

You don't get paid for being retired from the military.

The apartment was realistic...HOWEVER, the area is mighty expensive. Santa Monica is a beach town. They lived a hop, skip and a jump from the beach. Those apts. near the beach are very expensive. If the writers considered their apt. to be the cheapest, even that would be expensive.

For some reason I am thinking they paid around $300 a month. I don't know if that's from an episode or some other reason. If that is the amount, that IS NOT REALISTIC.

It's not supposed to be realistic...it's supposed to be TV.:D

If you try to apply logic and reality to sitcoms...and most TV shows in general, you'll drive yourself crazy, Irene!!

Jack probably only spent four years in the military.

After all, he was only in his 20's when the series started. Certainly, he wouldn't be entitled to any kind of pay.

The trio's rent WAS $300.00 when the Ropers were there. That wasn't unrealistic 25+ years ago.

Dr. Thong...STOP IT JUST STOP IT...Lmao!!!!! you say this abt every other thread when we have these discussions...

For the Santa Monica area in the mid or late 70's that rent is NOT CORRECT. I have relatives that have lived in that area during the time when TC was being shown. In that time period they even joked abt the fact that Three's Company was full of s**t in regards to beach apts. or apts. near the Santa Monica beach area. You have Venice Beach, you have the pier with rides and many shops...the area is a haven for celebs. I was only 13 when TC first aired and even I knew that was LUDICROUS rent.

I got the impression that he worked in the restaurant business at various times and places. Waiting or bartending, maybe.

I guess I'm too much of a realist. I don't analyze shows nearly as much as some people do. Not that that's a bad thing.

I mean, I do analyze them, but I allow for a certain suspension of disbelief. I don't question how the Friends can afford such luxurious apartments when some of them don't work or just barely work.

Irene, you are always fun and I have to admit, you're awful cute when ya get riled.:D

The rent was $300 with the Ropers, but it went up later on because in the episode "Borrowing Trouble", Janet and Terri ask Mr. Furley for an extention in paying the rent because they want to give the $500 rent money to Jack (because they think he can't afford his bill for his restaurant).

I know, i know you are not an analyst as much as we are. As a matter of fact, I never really was until a few years back watching reruns of old shows and then you kinda get bored of the shows themselves and you look for bloopers, goofs, "reality" and so forth. THEN! coming to this board and seeing my prayers answered that YES! THERE ARE OTHERS LIKE ME who wonder abt something, question something, etc. WE ARE THE CORONERS TO TELEVISION SHOWS...WATCH OUT, WE DICE, SLICE, CHOP AND OBLITERATE THE SHOWS TO THREADS!!!!!!!!:D

Awwww, you are cute no matter what Dr. Thong!!!!! YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO SEE ME IN PERSON WHEN I GET RILED UP THOUGH...

They probably used "300" because it was easily divisible by three, and an easy number for typical "Three's Company" fans to conceptualize, without getting too complicated.

Face it. They kind of people watching this show were probably not the same crowd that was watching Hill Street Blues or MacGuyver.

What does that have to do with anything? I watched those two shows as well...and besides, TC came on in the 70's...

I think fans of the show should get together and form a think tank for the betterment of mankind. You could call it the Three's Company Society.

I certainly didn't make the "rocket science" statement to offend anyone. Personally, I am a fan of Three's Company and rarely, if ever, watched the other 2 shows I mentioned. I've never aspired to be a rocket scientist, either.

I'm a Three's Company fan!

Don't forget, in the loan shark episode, where Chrissy borrows the $300, at the first of that episode jack gets on to her for throwing away the mail, and then he replies, "My G.I. check is in there!" I looked it up on the internet and if he served 6 months in the reserves he would have been allowed $190.00 a month for 36 months. For serving. if he was in the Naval Academy for 4 years and set aside $2700.00 for himself, the Government would double what he saved, and put $5400.00 on top of his for a grand total of $8100.00 !!!! And the show was on the "correct" timeline, because when Jack first cooks for Janet & Chrissy, He says he will graduate from cooking school in 1980, which would be "3 years" from when the show debuted in 1977!! So at my best guess, with the above statement in the loan shark episode about his G.I. check in the mail, he served in the reserves & received a check each month for approximately $190.00 a month, plus all the "odd-jobs" he had, selling encyclopedias, modeling jobs, etc.. That's how he had "steady income", those G.I. checks kept him going when he was out of work. Since rent, it seemed was all the room mates were worried about, (no phone bill payment mentioned, or power bill mentioned, he could pay his $100.00 a month and still have a proposed $90.00 left "in his pocket" for his dates along with whatever he made on the "odd-jobs". This is how he had income. His G.I checks from the Navy.
