I haven't read the 1991 TV Guide Preview yet but I'm sure that this show received a lot of praise because it was really good. I watched 7 eps this morning and I loved Redd Foxx grouchiness toward his grand kids and the interaction between Della Reeese and Redd Foxx. It's a shame Redd sudden passed away because I think this show would have been the HIT of the 1991-92 TV Season.

BTW: I don't kno what the producers were trying to accomplish when they added JACKEE to the show

I got all episodes of the Royal Family. This was probably my favorite short-lived series. I especially liked the interaction between Redd and Larenz Tate. Like Larenz needed Al (Redd) to keep him on the right track. Solomon, did you see the episode when Al was watching TV and the theme from Sanford and Son came on? That was so special. Note:Waldo (Shaun Harrison was in that ep)

Jackee was a horrible replacement who didn't fit the chemistry. The producers were better off NOT replacing him instead of bringing her on there.

No I didn't but I'm guessing that ep is 3 or 4 because I watched eps 1 , 2, 5, 6, and 7 but not 3 or 4 yet.

Hey Garfiedkool, the Girl Kim that Waldo was trying to get with looked better than Ashley from Fresh Prince, Laura from Family Matters, Zoria from Parenthood, and Max from Family Matters. Damm she was HOT!!! Also that wasn't the real Sanford and Son Theme that played on the TV-lol Also Waldo was DUMB on this show just like he was in Family Matters

She was hot, but she wasn't as hot as Zoria and Max in my opinion. I know that wasn't the real theme from S@S, but it was the same tune, and it was so special because I think they did that to pay tribute to the Fred Sanford character.

Did you see the episode with Jermaine Hopkins(Lean On Me, Juice) dancing around? I liked that one too.

Yeah it took me a while to noticed it was him-lol This show had to be a Top 10 show before Redd Foxx died.

I don't know if it was a top ten hit, but I think it was a modest hit. I was watching this show every week when it premiered back in 1991, and when he died, that was it.

I will let you in on a secret. The episode where they killed him off kind of got me emotional. I don't know if you watched it yet, but when Della started crying that was it. But it was good to see Slappy White and Don Bexley in that episode. Sorry for spoiling it if you haven't seen it yet.

ONE SEASON WONDERS: The Royal Family (https://benjamonsterstv.blogspot.com/2021/11/one-season-wonders-royal-family.html)

Brief Pilot Review:

I have never been a fan of Sanford and Son and part of the reason is I don't really buy into Redd Foxx's brand of humor. That was evident again from the first few minutes of The Royal Family (https://www.google.com/search?q=%22The+Royal+Family%22+CBS&sca_esv=f0f6d5f05aa680dc&sca_upv=1&biw=1600&bih=773&tbs=bkt%3As%2Ccdr%3A1%2Ccd_min%3AJanuary+1_2+1991%2Ccd_max%3ADecember+31_2+1991&tbm=bks&sxsrf=ACQVn0_yNhxliOFIroVBprka3WmrdCf9aw%3A1712570371456&ei=A8ATZtW8G8HVp84Pz9CDsA8&ved=0ahUKEwiVypLlrbKFAxXB6skDHU_oAPYQ4dUDCAo&uact=5&oq=%22The+Royal+Family%22+CBS&gs_lp=Eg1nd3Mtd2l6LWJvb2tzIhYiVGhlIFJveWFsIEZhbWlseSIgQ0JTSOUGULwDWLwDcAB4AJABAJgBlwGgAasCqgEDMC4yuAEDyAEA-AEBmAIAoAIAmAMAiAYBkgcAoAfjAQ&sclient=gws-wiz-books)'s pilot. It was just one insult-based joke after another between Foxx and Della Reese. Reese was game to go toe to toe with Foxx and had funnier delivery but it was such an off-putting way to start the series. From the little I have seen of Sanford, it seemed like Foxx had lost a step and his timing wasn't as strong as it was on the series that made him famous. There were flashes of some funny timing but overall, he seemed like a comedian who was past his prime (and unfortunately, his voice was a little hard to understand at times too).

The series did get better once the rest of the family arrived as the show quickly got through the premise and then settled into having fun with the ensemble. Future stars Larenz Tate and the late Naya Rivera had some good moments. Tate was saddled with an unnecessary attempt at a serious moment but he still handled it well. Rivera, who was only four years old when this was filmed, was a pretty typical cute sitcom kid but she had a ton of charm and some pretty decent comedic timing. Unlike some pilots, it was very easy to see what this sort of show would be. Even Foxx was softened some by the end of the episode (surprise, surprise) and the relationship between him and Reese got better when the insults slowed down a bit. The family seemed to have fun with each other in the scenes.

What Went Wrong:

One of the sadder entries in the "One Season Wonder" posts, this show did not make it due in large part to a tragic event on set. CBS was excited about Redd Foxx returning to TV and his return was a centerpiece to their marketing strategy. Their other big marketing point was the show was created by Eddie Murphy, who was a big name movie star. The show was given the 8pm Wednesday slot in an attempt to create a new comedy hour and the early results were not gangbusters but promising enough, beating ABC's competing comedy, Dinosaurs in the first couple weeks. Critics were mixed on the show with general praise for Foxx and Della Reese while still acknowledging it was a pretty standard family sitcom.

Everything changed on October 11, 1991 (https://www.google.com/search?q=Redd+Foxx&sca_esv=f0f6d5f05aa680dc&sca_upv=1&biw=1600&bih=773&sxsrf=ACQVn08NTrR8_jShL7laZIheyrmyFrS22A%3A1712570497668&source=lnt&tbs=bkt%3As%2Ccdr%3A1%2Ccd_min%3A10%2F10%2F1991%2Ccd_max%3A5%2F13%2F1992&tbm=bks) though when Foxx suffered a massive heart attack on set. Considering how often his character on Sanford and Son faked heart attacks, many thought it was a joke at first but soon realized it wasn't and Foxx was rushed to the hospital where he died later that evening. The series made the decision to go on without Foxx and went off the air for re-tooling. They brought in 277's Jackee Harry to play the younger sister of Reese's character and wrote Foxx's death into the script. The series aired one post-Foxx episode in November before going off the air until April. It returned to its Wednesday slot but the momentum had slowed and the show was working against its original premise. It was cancelled at the end of the season. Who knows what would have happened if Foxx had lived or if the show had managed to get back on the air quicker.
