View Full Version : Inaccurate Photos of TV characters on DVD Cover
TVFactFan 06-06-2006, 04:48 PM I wonder why the Photos of Characters on the front of DVD is always screwed up? Is there any show that the Photo of the character matches on every season released on DVD? I know season 1 of Three's Company DVD cover had the Season 4 Phot and Season 1 of Good Times had the Season 3 Photo. So is there a show out that had all photos correct for every season? Or do these Production companies just find a photo from anywhere to put on the front cover?
robby76 06-06-2006, 10:55 PM Punky Brewster has stayed the same from 1984 to 1987, and will probably remain so for the duration of '88 - '89.
Some tv dvd companies have zero creativity!
Mister Ed 06-07-2006, 07:05 PM The Sitcoms Online review said that they put the wrong house on the Married... with Children fifth season DVD cover. Sony, what idiots!
Adamantium 06-07-2006, 09:03 PM That's annoying to me. I want each season set to have pictures from only that season. On the back of "Hogan's Heroes" they had a pic of the Baker character. However, he didn't join the show until it's final season.
NewsRadio has been doing fine. Seasons 1 & 2 (which are together) has a nice season one shot. Season 3 has a nice season three shot. However season 4 has a bunch of pics from season 3 just pasted together.
That's the good thing about SBTB:TNC. Each season had a different cast, so the cast pics had to be from the correct season. lol
I don't like any of the Taxi covers either. They're not all accurate with each season. And in season three, it looks like Bobby was just pasted into a cast photo, which he was not originally in.

It looked like Isabel Sanford was pasted on the front cover of season 5 of the Jeffersons
Rachel3118 06-09-2006, 01:44 PM I never really noticed this problem.
You would think that it wouldn't be that hard for them to get pictures of the right seasons.

Well the King Of Queens & Married...With Children both had fake houses on their covers...:D
freshprinceofLA 06-20-2006, 10:25 PM i've noticed this on the back cover of remmington steele i wonder y Mildred Krebs was on there when she came in season 2
factsoflife 08-12-2006, 12:44 AM I'm pretty sure that the Will and Grace DVD's have the correct photos for each season... ditto, Friends.

I want to know why they left Mildred off the Season 4/5 cover. Granted she's not a leading role but she was part of the team and she was on Season 3's cover!
A few of the M*A*S*H DVDs have covers where the characters look like they were "photoshopped" together. The season seven cover looks awful.
And M*A*S*H season ten uses a shot from the fourth, fifth or sixth season (one can tell because B.J.'s cheesy mustache is noticeably missing).
Mister Ed 08-13-2006, 06:10 PM The menus for The Complete Fourth Season of Dallas feature Season Five cast shots.
BuddyHinton 08-19-2006, 11:01 PM Glad to see it isn't only ME that hates this!!!!!
White Shadow S2 has a different cast in the pic!!
Seinfeld is so utterly generic. NONE of the pics from any season match, they are just random shots and that really bothers me, as does the exact wording from one season to the next as far as the extras etc.
Columbo may be the worst offender of all (not Falk:) anyway, some of the covers are from him 30 years later!!!!!!!!
**faints**
rc.uk 08-22-2006, 06:20 AM It varies quite a lot from show to show. The ones in my collection which stay (roughly) true to how they looked in each season are All In The Family, Frasier, 3rd Rock from the Sun (UK versions, not US) and possibly Cheers, although on some sets (e.g. Season 4), some characters are missing.
One of the main ones that doesn't show accurate photos is The Golden Girls. Some pictures look like they were taken before Golden Girls even started...especially Betty White. Furthermore, most of the photos of Estelle Getty do not feature her glasses, which she always wore on the show.
The most boring covers, for me, are Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond. Seinfeld uses photographs from Season 9 all the time and the designs are always the same. ELR uses exactly the same photos on each one, the only difference being the colour of the boxes!

I agree it has always bothered me that the golden girls covers don't show sophia's glasses.
chilenopo 08-27-2006, 01:50 AM The covers on "Gilligan's Island" DVDS look like the bad made-for-TV Gilligan movies.

I like the covers, and the reunion movies :p
EmoJoe 08-30-2006, 11:44 PM Whos the Boss? season 1 DVD is a season 3 cover.
factsoflife 08-31-2006, 10:06 AM On Punky Brewster season 2 and 3 they have the same picture from the season 1 set... which sucks since by season 2 and 3 she looked totally different.

I loved the tv movie "Castaway On Gilligans Island", where they create a resort on the island. That one was great! I wish I still had it on tape.
Chocoholic 08-31-2006, 12:28 PM Wings seasons 1&2 includes Antonio on the cover even though he wasn't part of the show until the third season.

basement_artie 09-02-2006, 05:29 PM My brother and I have been collecting for probably 3 or so years now and probably have 150 plus boxsets between the two of us. The thing that ticks me off the most is when they are damaged. It seems like 75% of the boxsets have some type of flaw coming out of the factory. Whether it is a bent corner, scratches, marks, creases, etc.
I agree though; I don't like it when they don't keep a common theme or the pictures are outdated or from the wrong year but I can live with that. It seems like these dvd companies or whoever produces these are challenged. Like Eagle Vision with Saved By The Bell Made 5 seasons 1+2, 3+4 and 5 when there where only 4 seasons plus the college years. Also, they didn't put a box cover on it; just the foldout cd holder I guess you would say.
I noticied a lot of companies are switching to slimline from the regular fold out cases in the middle of the series which makes them different heights and sizes. I notcied that on Fresh Prince on the first 3 seasons they have the number of the season on the top of the side that you can see if yo where to see on the shelf and then on season 4 no number. Another show is the Man Show which starts up with fold out cases then switches to 4 full dvd cases for season 3. Why not use slimline or a dvd case that can hold more than one dvd? Season 3 of the man show is probably bigger than 5 slimline boxsets put together.
I just don't get what is so hard about staying consitant or keeping the same theme. When you spend as much as my brother and I do on boxsets you expect them to look nice. Thats my rant....
Dr. Thong 09-02-2006, 06:38 PM And M*A*S*H season ten uses a shot from the fourth, fifth or sixth season (one can tell because B.J.'s cheesy mustache is noticeably missing).
That got under my skin. I realize the M*A*S*H DVDs are no-frills, just the episodes sets, but at least put a photo that's relevant to the time period.
What's going to happen on season eleven - they use a shot with Henry Blake and Trapper John??

Agreed. The "Three's Company" boxsets are renowned for that. I get mine all posted too which just adds to the slight damages.
Superstar 09-03-2006, 04:09 PM There is the wrong house in the background of the Ellen Show DVD
BuddyHinton 09-03-2006, 10:43 PM Not really a "flaw" but am I the only who wishes (now in hindsight) that the original Star Trek was just packaged like any other show (cardboard case/slimline disc holders)? They did a nice job as far as "beauty" but as far as "practical" that ball was dropped! Sometimes I just pass up watching them b/c it's just a hassle and I'm always afraid I'll mess them up.
Dr. Thong 09-05-2006, 02:12 PM I don't know about the accuracy of this photo...

...but shouldn't this set be titled These Friends Of Mine: The Complete First Season??
TV Knowledge Fan 09-08-2006, 03:44 PM ...it SHOULD be, but since the series was known as "ELLEN" for the majority of its network (and syndicated) run, I suppose A & E Home Video doesn't want to "confuse" the first time buyer who might be "misled" into thinking they're purchasing a "different" series, if they slapped the first season "THESE FRIENDS OF MINE" title on the box. Who knows? Those early episodes might have "ELLEN" reissue titles as well.....

The episodes on the DVD have "Ellen" in the opening credits instead of "These Friends of Mine." That ticks me off, although I'm mostly glad that they released the show at all.
I can totally understand them putting "Ellen: Season 1" on the cover, but the episodes in the DVD collection should have the original "These Friends of Mine" opening. (Although to be fair, the opening scenes and music are original, it's just instead of saying These Friends of Mine, it says Ellen.)
For example, the Britcom "The Good Life" is on DVD. The name on the cover says "Good Neighbors", which is the American name for the sitcom. However, the actual episodes have the original "The Good Life" opening titles. The same goes for "Grave & Favour", the Are You Being Served? spin-off. It's on DVD, under the American title of "Are You Being Served? Again!", but the actual episodes say "Grave & Favour".
So, um, yeah.
PZelda 09-08-2006, 10:43 PM One thing that bugs me a lot is that they ALWAYS use wrong pics for the Full House sets. They've used almost the same pic of Joey -- sometimes I wonder if it's the same pic of him, and they just pasted a different shirt on him -- on all the boxes, and they use incorrect pics of people on the episode selection screen when you watch an episode of Full House. Season 4 has a LOT of later-season pics (pics from around season 6 and later), and they used the wrong season cast pic for the main menu on all the discs! :cuss:
I realize that the adults (Dave Coulier, John Stamos and Lori Loughlin) didn't change much in terms of looks during the later seasons, but it wouldn't kill them to at least use the correct season pics of these people. Whether they like it or not, everybody changed to some degree in terms of appearances over the 8 years Full House was on TV. I'm just thankful they used the correct pic of John Stamos on the first season box- he had a mullet during the first season, and there's a pic of him with a mullet from that season on the box. So, yay :)
I know a lot of other companies do this to various TV shows...But Full House and Three's Company are the ones that get under my skin the most. Everybody on that show changed a LOT over the 8 years TC was on, as well (Joyce DeWitt was the person that changed the most, I think). Geez, it wouldn't have killed them. When they were rushing to get season 1 on shelves after John Ritter's passing in 2003, they friggin' used a cast picture from around season 3. That made me SO mad. :mumble: :cuss:
Kristen 09-09-2006, 12:56 AM The only show I've ever noticed this with really is Mary Tyler Moore, where there's a season 6 or 7 photo on the back of the S4 set. I know it's from a later season, b/c it was taken in the new apt. set, and they just cropped it out. I've seen the actual photo online, though.
