View Full Version : Major Headache Sufferers.....

As you may or may not know, I suffer from MAJOR headaches. I suffer them so often that it's really interferring with my life because I usually need to be in a less lit room and need a nap. I actually do not have one known headache. I seem to suffer mostly from sinus headaches and migraines.

Most of the time, the sharp pain is coming from a bit inside of my right eye's socket close to my lachrimal duct, so some people are saying it might be that I may need glasses. Holy crap!! I used to wear glasses to correct my lazy eye I was born with, but I was having problems seeing far away. I had to lower my glasses JUST so I could see far away. So I only wore them because I had to. I stopped wearing them when I was almost 18 years old.

I know I need to see a doctor, and bla, bla, bla... I also need to get my eyes checked out. A lot of people are convinced since I use computers sooooo much, I may have to revert to wearing glasses. Ugh! That means more responsibility purchasing them, caring for them, cleaning them, storing them safely, etc, etc.... I'm soooo NOT looking forward to that! pissed:

Sooooo... my question - anyone have any good medication and/or suggestions to help me temporarily relieve the headache pains? I took the OTC version of Wal-Mart's "Sinus Headache" pills, and those work sometimes while other times it doesn't work. Any other herbal remedies or anything??? This is, of course, ONLY temporarily until I make an eye doctor appointment. Thanks to all who can help.

Get some Head-On or some of those Migraine cooling pads, those work good

I've had headaches for a very long time, so I'm really sorry that you go through that. :( For me, ibuprofen works best for the pain.

Hey Mona :) ,

As a fellow headache/migraine sufferer, I can definitely sympathesize with your pain! It's the worst, isn't it? I was told by a doctor that my migraines were hereditary (Mom and Dad both get them all the time, especially Mom). Honestly, the only thing that helps me personally is sleeping in a dark, quiet room. If it's a small headache, I try some Tylenol and that usually does the trick, but migraines NOOOO way--nothing works but sleeping.

Best of luck to you  Have you tried cutting down on salt intake? I know salt makes my headaches worse. I heard green apples and bananas alleviate headaches, but who knows if that's a myth.

I get really bad headaches all the time. I think it has to do with the car accident I was in in April 1995. My head hit the windshield and ever since I have had really bad headaches. Another side effect of that accident is that I can only turn my head so far in either direction without it hurting.

Thank you all for your wonderful pieces of advice, hints and suggestions. I have found myself napping ALL evening long yesterday. I had my computer on and checked out all your posts, but I still had my headache that I wasn't in the mood to respond until this morning.

Thanks! I will try the cooling pads. What is "Head-On," exactly? Can I find these items in the headache section of like Wal-Mart, Target, etc?

Thank you. I am also sorry you also suffer from headaches as well. I think I envy people who have said they seem to "never" suffer headaches. I know of a former instructor/co-worker of mine (I mentioned her in the "Do you know anyone special?" thread) who told me she used to suffer from bad headaches, but they went away once she had some chemo. Amazing.

Ibuprofen... ah, okay.... What mg do you recommend?

Hey there! Yes, the pain is the worst pain. Ugh... My boss even told me I really need to check this out with a doctor because he knew a friend who also suffered from really bad headaches that he couldn't take it one day and killed himself due to the throbbing pain. Yikes. :(

Hereditary, eh? Wow... I better check on my family history then. One of my maternal cousins does get headaches but only sometimes. I hear what you mean about sleeping in a dark, quiet room. I find myself doing that. I turn off all the lights and turn my TV down way down and usually have to cover my head. I try to nap, but I am usually tossing and turning. And I find myself napping for about 30 minutes to an hour at a time before I wake up myself or someone on the phone is calling me. Grrr... http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/images/smilies/angryfire.gif That's what's been happening to me these past three days. I woke up with a headache again, but I took two migraine pills, and that seemed to have stopped it. What's weird is that one form of OTC medication works best for me at a certain time but not necessarily at another time. So I have sinus pills, regular pain reliever, and migraine pills. I take them accordingly to where exactly I feel the pain.

Hmmmm... that's a good idea about cutting down on my salt intake. Very good idea. It would be difficult for me at first because I am a MAJOR salt-lover. But I will try anything... Thanks!!

I get migraines alot too... I cant really help you on temperary relief, b/c no home remedy or anything over-the-counter eases my migraines. If it's just a sinus headache, Sinus Tylonel usually works pretty well. They also have tylenol for tension headaches too, which you could try.
Thanks!! I will have to see about that... Hmmmm.... Sinus Tylenol for both tension and sinus headaches... That sounds like a worthwhile combination instead of me purchasing two different OTC meds. Thanks!!

When I get those kind of headaches Aspirin works best for them. Also laying in a drak, quiet room, with a cold washcloth over your eyes and/or forehead can sometimes help.
A cold wash cloth is like a cooling pad. I will try that too. Thanks!

Thanks, Mona.:) Until recently I never really took the accident into consideration when wondering why I get so many darn headaches. Then I realized that the headaches started right after I was in the accident.

Yeah, it's weird how our bodies are just so prone to happenings and events where they can either better or worsen our pain. Weird yet mysterious....

Once you go to the eye doctor, your problem may be solved. I have an uncle who had migraines, and once he got glasses, they stopped. You could try the salt thing, but the triggers really are different for everyone. It really could be just about anything, there are so many things to consider. If you ever need to talk about it, feel free, b/c I've been seeking help for this for almost 5 years and they still arent sure whats wrong. Im actually going in for another round of tests next month. Mine may be hereditary, b/c my aunt gets them, but thats the best they can come up with, and they havent really found an ideal solution for me. Good luck with that, I hope you find something that works.
Thanks for the offer on talking! I will contact you and keep you updated. It certainly helps to talk with others in dealing with similar situation. Wow... so they are running continuous tests on you? I have a feeling I am going to go through the same thing since I seem to have multi types of headaches and symptoms and all.

I once read that staying away from alcohol, cheese (especially aged cheeses), and caffeine help, so I really cut down on it all for a period of time. Well, I don't really drink to begin with, so I cut down on the other things. It was really tough since I love sodas and many types of cheeses. I found those didn't help either. But you are right about how different foods/ingredients affect different people. Hmmmm.... Yeah, the best is to try different foods/ingredients in different periods to find out. Good idea, once again.

I don't get headaches DAILY, more like maybe once per week or two. I have a big-ass jar of generic ibuprofen in the bathroom...The majority of the time, my headaches are only bad enough to require ibuprofen. But, I do have some Extra Strength Excedrin in my purse...I used to get REALLY REALLY REALLY bad headaches, pretty much migraines -- almost daily -- back in the summer of 2002. A friend gave me her bottle of Extra Strength Excedrin, and my migraines became less frequent. This type of Excedrin contains caffeine, if you weren't aware. I do get migraines every now and then, maybe once every two months or so.

I have found that Tylenol doesn't do jack **** for me. I sprained my wrist last spring, and I was prescribed to take it...Didn't help my sprain pains one bit, ouch! So I have to bring my own medication w/ me when I go places. In my case, it could be any number of reasons I get headaches, so it would be tough to narrow them down. And it could also be any number of reasons why I have the occasional migraine.

I really do hope that, with help, you are able to figure out what is causing all your headaches. :(

Thanks! So liquid tabs seem easier than pill form? Someone else also recommended the non-drowsy Dayquil liquid tabs too.

Yeah pretty much... tests, tests, tests. I've seen a number of doctors and nothing concrete has come up, and no meds have significantly helped long-term wise... but I wont get into that here.
I've heard the alcohol, cheese, caffiene thing before too. I've never had alcohol, I would never give up cheese, and I havent had caffiene in 3 or 4 years. But those are just a few things to consider. It really could be anything. It could be a change in your diet, or maybe you're using a new shampoo or a different perfume. Really think of any changes that might have happened when you started having migraines. It could also be a number of things physically that you will probably get checked out for over time if what the doctors first suggest doesnt help.
Yeah, checking on habits and things I've been using does make sense. I will make a count of those things. I will call a primary care physician this coming week to get an appointment set. I think it's best to first check the eye doctor since I am on the computer on a daily basis. I have been told it's best to go see a doctor just as I am experiencing the headache at that moment, too.
