View Full Version : TV Shows That Lasted Longer Than They Deserved to
KristinHerreraFan 05-19-2006, 05:37 PM Which shows in your opinion were bad that they lasted more seasons than you would've expected because they're just terrible.
I think The Flying Nun is one of them, should've been cancelled after 1 season.
there are a few others
Nighthawk76 05-19-2006, 05:57 PM The X-Files: I think the series began to go down hill in the sixth season. And it lasted nine seasons. Seasons 1-5 are excellent but seasons 6-9 were not very good.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: Should have ended after the sixth season and not the seventh season. Season seven is pretty bad.
Mr. Television 05-19-2006, 05:59 PM Friends. :D
7th Heaven.
I am so pissed off that show picked up by the CW, and some of my favorite UPN shows got canceled because 7th Heaven, had to clud up their timeslots.
The Simpsons should go away.
Seinfeld stayed on a couple of seasons to long.
Soul Train should have ended in the early 80's. I know it is not sitcom, but it was so much better in the 70's.
MikeLutton 05-19-2006, 06:38 PM Er that schould ended long time ago
Er that schould ended long time ago
True. I gave up a while ago on that show.
Despite having two decent series finale episodes, I think both "Will ANd Grace" and "That 70's Show" should have bowed out earlier.
Things were never the same on TSS when Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher left.
W&G relied too much on guest star cameos.
Marvo301 05-20-2006, 01:43 AM Happy Days - they should of ended it when Ron Howard and Donny Most left.
Laverne and Shirley - the California episodes never should have been made.
Mr. Television 05-20-2006, 01:50 AM The Drew Carey Show's last few seasons were subpar.
Charmed stayed way to long
Roseanne lasted a season to many
MikeLutton 05-20-2006, 02:00 AM Cheers.
Law and Ordor wont that show please go away im so sick n tired of the spin offs it so annoying.
King of the Hill
Saturday Night Live.
treky 05-20-2006, 02:32 AM "The Drew Carey show" should have ended when Winfred-Louder was bought out. It wasn't the same after that.
"Friends" should have ended when Chandler and Monica got married.
"MASH" should have ended when Radar left.
MikeLutton 05-20-2006, 06:23 AM Dont forget about Dallas Knots Landing and All in the Family Night court.
TVJunkie101 05-20-2006, 08:49 AM Falcon Crest, Dallas and Knots Landing all should of ended one season prior to their last. Dallas was very good up until the end but lost too many important cast members. Falcon Crest had a horrible final season. What a mess that was. Knots Landing was still good, but it should of ended when Joan van Ark left.
That '70s Show and Happy Days are all good examples of what should of ended when core cast members departed.
7th Heaven should of ended this year, too. Poor Everwood ...
PrettyinPink55 05-20-2006, 12:24 PM 7th Heaven!!!!
Mister Ed 05-20-2006, 03:26 PM 7th Heaven
Roseanne
The Drew Carey Show
gilligan fanatic 05-20-2006, 03:59 PM still running, but it should have ended after it's 12th season, The Simpsons. Three's Company is another one. By the 8th season they were way to old to be sharing an apartment.
snl 70s show fan 05-20-2006, 07:18 PM Falcon Crest, Dallas and Knots Landing all should of ended one season prior to their last.
Poor Everwood ...i think dallas lasted about 3 seasons longer than it should have by the time it ended the once great show was a tired pale former shaddow of its former self
mstewart 05-20-2006, 11:19 PM Too Close for Comfort - Should had ended when ABC cancelled it. After the birth of Andrew the show became uninteresting to watch. I continued to watch the show because I am a big fan of Ted Knight and Nancy Dussault. I knew they added the baby on the show to give Nancy's character more to do because in the first season Nancy was unhappy with the lack of development in the character of Muriel Rush.
The New Dick Van Dyke Show - The show was entertaining to watch when it was taped in Arizona. When the show was overhauled with a new locale and cast the show was not the same. The plug should had been pulled after Carl Reiner left at the end of season 2. The Arizona shows had an excellent cast. Nancy Dussault was in that one as well.
That Girl - It is beyond me that this show lasted 5 years. It was not funny nor entertaining.
Zebra 3 05-22-2006, 11:24 AM Happy Days - they should of ended it when Ron Howard and Donny Most left.I totally agree, and don't forget after Ron and Donny left the new cast member, Jump The Shark (http://www.jumptheshark.com/)'s patron saint Ted McGinley.
Saturday Night Live.
I disagree, SNL has been a hit and miss throughout including its overrated early seasons.
megamanj2004 05-22-2006, 12:52 PM Happy Days - once Ron and Donny left, it became too much like "The Fonzie Show."
Laverne and Shirley - From Milwaukee to LA.
In fact just about virtually almost every '70s sitcom that debuted between the early '70s and 1977, should of ended once they hit 1980.
Seinfield - After Episode 1...lol.
The Cosby Show - after Season 5, all other seasons was UGH! First that annoying lil' gorgonite muffin head known as Olivia, then the uglier weenie gorognite known as Martin, and the queen gorgonite known as Cousin Pam!
DS - Should of ended by 1984. By then, antoher memeber of the gorgonite clan, known as Sam came along and ruined the show.
Family Ties - Show should of ended not on the birth of Andrew, but when the arrival of that no-talent, Rambo wannabe reject, known as Nick.
Law and Order - Enough Said!
ER - YEEEEEESSSS!!! After Anthony Edwards left, why does NBC keeping on dragging this show in the boring dull-drums? Sheeeesh!
That '70s Show - Like the departures of Ron and Donny on Happy Days, this show shares nearly the same equivalent of the departures of Topher and Ashton. The last wasn't as energetic and fun as before.
Good Times - After the 1976-77 season, minus John Amos.
Flying Nun - After the first episode...lol!
Who's the Boss? - After season 6.
everett552 05-22-2006, 02:27 PM UPN's Girlfriends!
greenlaser5555 05-22-2006, 08:37 PM Well I'm a big fan of Coach. But I gotta admit, it should've ended before moving to Orlando, FL.
As for What I Like About You. That pile of monkey cr@p with AB should've ended after seeason-numbuh-ONE!!!
dawsongirl 05-23-2006, 02:32 PM NBC seems to be hanging onto ER and Law and Order a little too long. L&O should have left after Jerry Orbach died.
And yeah, though I'm a fan, I haven't watched a new Simpsons ep in several seasons. Of course, what else does Fox have that anyone watches comedy wise besides Family Guy? Fox just doesn't want to have to find something new. I wonder if my boss works for Fox?
masterblooregard 05-23-2006, 02:39 PM Yeah 7th Heaven is the very first thing that comes to mind.
Troi Tribble 11-03-2006, 07:10 PM Friends. :D
YES! I agree! "Friends"! I was going to write that! Also, "Survivor", "Howard Stern Show", etc.
Adamantium 11-03-2006, 09:37 PM Frasier - I don't have a specific time for when the show should have ended, but 11 seasons is a bit much for the show. This is of course my opinion, and I'm sure there are fans of all eleven years. I like the show, when I watch the early episodes, but I can't see how they squeezed eleven seasons out of it.
M*A*S*H - Just too long! I love the show, but to me, the best seasons are the Henry Blake/Trapper John years. Which is the first three. That means there's eight seasons without them.
Saved by the Bell: The New Class - I know most people would say it never should have been made. But I like it. And even though I liked the later seasons, in my opinion it had gone on too long. It should have ended around season five. That way Maria wouldn't have been in high school for five years, like she ended up being.
vashti1999 11-03-2006, 09:48 PM Saved by the Bell: The New Class - I know most people would say it never should have been made. But I like it. And even though I liked the later seasons, in my opinion it had gone on too long. It should have ended around season five. That way Maria wouldn't have been in high school for five years, like she ended up being.
Maybe she just wasn't that bright, got left back a grade along the way.
In respect that it didn't really drop off in quality from earlier seasons, I'm glad it lasted as long as it did.
Adamantium 11-03-2006, 10:01 PM Maybe she just wasn't that bright, got left back a grade along the way.
In respect that it didn't really drop off in quality from earlier seasons, I'm glad it lasted as long as it did.
I guess I really just wanted Ryan to graduate with the gang. Instead, he left the show after season five, and Tony graduated with the gang.
You're right, the show didn't take a dive in quality. However, the final episode would have meant alot more if Ryan was there, and graduated with them. Instead, they introduced a bland new guy ran for 26 more episodes and then ended.
Although now that I've said it, I'm kind of in the mood to watch seasons 6 & 7. Go figure. lol
friendsfan77 11-04-2006, 12:19 AM Will & Grace. The quality just wasnt the same in the last three or four years.
The Simpsons. I LOVE the older episodes of this show, and a few post-1996 episodes I thought were good, but most of the episodes after '96 really werent that great. And sadly, but not surprisedly, this season premiere was not good to me at all.
JuicyCoutureGirl 11-04-2006, 12:28 AM Saved by the Bell:New Class: God awful, especially the whole Nicky and Maria thing and how that played out.
Roseanne-Should have ended around 1995. Too complicated once everyone and their mama joined the cast.
The Cosby Show-Should have ended in 1990, ratings took a nosedive and I blame Olivia the brat and her bran muffin father Martin.
The Facts of Life-As much as I love this show, Mrs G. leaving should have been the last episode, after that we had to deal with Andy getting more lines, and that stupid Pippa.
Friends-dragged on too long, they weren't funny to begin with.
Girlfriends-Four, now three grown women acting like teenagers. Lynn's almot 35 and she STILL doesn't have a real job, Joan can't get a man, and Maya is acting like a hoodrat screaming "Oh hell no" every five seconds. These storylines are getting old.
7th Heaven- 'nuff said, after adding no talent sisters of lame Hilary Duff and Jessica Simpson.
Good Times-Wasn't the same after James died.
Kristen 11-04-2006, 12:52 AM I agree w/ all the posters who've said 7th Heaven. I'm a fan, and I do still watch, but it's gotten ridiculous. I really think they should've ended around the time Mary went to Buffalo or Matt got married. Things just sort of went downhill from there.
Edit:I think Designing Women lasted one season too long. I know a lot of people would say it lasted two seasons longer than it should've, but I didn't mind Season 6 w/ Allison. I just don't really think the BJ character really did anything for me.
- Kristen
comedyfreak 11-04-2006, 05:12 AM Archie Bunker's Place should have ended after its first season, it wasn't the same without Reiner and Struthers. All In The Family should have ended at Season 8, The Stivics moving would have been a great series finale.
Friends should have ended when Monica and Chandler got married. I disagree about the Flying Nun, it's one of my favorite classic old shows. Bewitched should have ended after Season 7. I agree about Happy Days, and Laverne & Shirley ending sooner than they did. They were beating a dead horse and MASH sould have also ended sooner than it did as well. The Jeffersons should have ended with Season 7.
Buffyboy323 11-04-2006, 06:59 AM In your opinion, what shows wore out their welcome? And when do you think they should have ended the series?
7th Heaven- Should have ended after Season 6.
Friends- After Season 8. Rachel has the baby, and doesn't choose to be with Ross or Joey (This way nobody get's hurt). Monica could have said she's pregnant, Joey say he's going to LA, and the Phoebe/Boyfriend story could have been sqeezed in there. If all this happened here, there would have been no reason at all the spread everything out for two more years.
Diff'rent Strokes- After Season 6. For one reason and one reason only: We would have never met Sam!!!
Charles In Charge- After Season 4. Although Season 4 did suck, IMO, Season 5 was just horrible. There's only about 6 or 7 episodes even worth watching.
Baywatch- After Season 6. (Even though I do like the Donna, Manny, Tracy, Logan and Hobie all grown up episodes). The show was never the same after Summer, Matt, CJ, Cody and Stephanie left. Luckily there was still eye candy.
Laverne and Shirley- After Season 6. I didn't really like the California episodes in Season 7. And Season 8 had no Shirley. It became the Laverne and Squiggy show. ABC was more interested in their pockets, than in the quality of what was once a great show.
Sopranos- After Season 4. Season 5, although I did watch, wasn't all that good until the last couple of episodes. And this year, UGH!..I cannot even sit through it anymore. I just skim through the episodes so I can see what's going on, but it's not good anymore.
Beverly Hills 90210- After Season 8. Valerie left. And Brandon was only in the first 4 or 5 episodes the following year. I could have done without the return of Dylan in the final Season. Although still worth watching, at this point the show just wasn't what it once was.
Three's Company- After Season 7. The show started to get weak in the 7th Season, and would remain that way until the end of the series. Season 8 did have some good episodes, but they could have made some great episodes in Season 7 and called it quits.
Penny Lane 11-04-2006, 10:40 AM Happy Days ran WAY too long! It should have been cancelled after at least season 4.
KurtfromPitts 11-07-2006, 01:53 PM One Day At a Time, Alice, and The Jeffersons. Also, Andy Griffith, once Don Knotts left Mayberry.
88survivor 11-10-2006, 04:41 AM Any soap opera on the air.......just can't stand them at all...:p
megamanj2004 11-10-2006, 06:45 PM Any soap opera on the air.......just can't stand them at all...:p
Amen to that, too! ;)
friendsfan77 11-10-2006, 06:48 PM Passions. I have no idea why this show is still on. I thought it was pretty good in its first year or two, even three... but it just got so tedious and ridiculous. I just gave up on it.
Will and Grace Fanatic 11-12-2006, 02:05 AM Roseanne-should have ended during it's 7th season when it was still in the top 10.
Will and Grace- Although I beleive season 7 and 8 had great episodes, it should have ended after the 6th season when it was still in the top 20.
8 Simple Rules- although some shows have made it after the star of the show dies or leaves the show. This show didn't have the great writing to do so. Should have ended after John's death.
88survivor 11-17-2006, 08:41 AM Family Matters....when it became the Steve/Stephan show. Especially when he made that invention in the first place.
Chain Gang Member 11-17-2006, 12:20 PM That 70s SHow because it should've ended up where Eric and DOnna got married
MikeLutton 11-17-2006, 01:28 PM the damm simpsons needs to end
friendsfan77 11-17-2006, 01:32 PM the damm simpsons needs to end
I agree wholeheartedly, and this is coming from someone who loves the show dearly. It's just been a few years way too late.
Scoobiedoo30 11-17-2006, 03:25 PM The Simpsons Broke M*A*S*H 11 Season record.
88survivor 11-18-2006, 01:45 AM Now they have a movie coming out in 2007.
Scoobiedoo30 11-18-2006, 01:53 AM Yes The Simpsons has a movie coming out uly 27, 2007
88survivor 11-20-2006, 01:42 AM July 27, 2007..:)
88survivor 11-26-2006, 01:53 PM :p Though I sometimes watched the old soaps from the 80s just to look at the fashion....:crazy: boy, those clothes were so 80s. Rick Springfield, Richard Dean Anderson,hahahaha..... God, can't be more 80s than that.
My mom has the old 80s soap days. You name it: Luke and Laura's wedding, Dr. Noah Drake's womanizing days, LOL...
But I don't watch the new soaps.....probably because the quality depleted since the mid 90s.
EmoJoe 11-26-2006, 04:23 PM ER, Law and Order, and 7th Heaven are all old and should have ended 3 or 4 years ago. barely anyone even watches them anymore. also, The Simpsons. now that Family Guy is huge, theres really no need for The Simpsons anymore, especially considering it's not as popular as it used to be. Family Guy is a million times more popular nowadays.
even though SNL does suck really badly now, it's become a staple to late night TV and it would be wrong to cancel it now.
88survivor 11-26-2006, 08:28 PM The reason SNL stinks is not because of ratings or a staple of late night viewing, but it really overstayed its welcome. And if Lorne Michaels passes away, then there would be no SNL afterwards.
factsoflife 11-27-2006, 01:59 AM NYPD BLUE: that show lasted way, way too long. it should have ended when Jimmy Smitt's left the show because the show never recovered after that...
88survivor 11-27-2006, 09:27 AM Despite Boy Meets World having the best finale in a sitcom, I didn't like the college years that much either. Especially the two new girls that couldn't act out of a wet paperbag.
Already Gone 11-27-2006, 10:14 AM Designing Women - Should have ended when Delta Burke and Jean Smart left. I never cared much for Allison, Carlene or BJ.
Welcome Back Kotter - Without Gabe Kaplan and John Travolta, the show sucked. It made no sense to add Beau DeLaBarre and make him a sweathog, when they had Carvelli and Murray who were more believeable. Beau stuck out like a sore thumb.
Friends - The first couple episodes where great before the Ross/Rachel saga went into full swing. That is what usually kills a show for me is that whole "Do they or don't they get together" bit. It's supposed to be a sitcom, not a romantic drama.
Moonlighting - Their bickering and solving crimes was what I watched the show for, not, to see them in bed together or having some lover's quarrel.
88survivor 11-27-2006, 02:45 PM I agree on Welcome Back, Kotter.
88survivor 11-28-2006, 03:01 PM But I agree, The Simpson should have quit about four or five seasons ago and now this movie is in the works. WTF?
eltonfan80 11-28-2006, 06:51 PM Family Matters....when it became the Steve/Stephan show. Especially when he made that invention in the first place.
i agree toally and with everone else when they say 7th heaven
88survivor 11-29-2006, 01:40 AM Growing Pains....Having a baby...I can take that, but fastfoward a couple of years and add an annoying 7 year old Ashley Johnson to the Seaver family, that's totally wrong. Not to mention Ashley is a terrible actress. But the total Jump The Shark moment happened when the Seavers adopted a young Leonardo DiCaprio to the addition of the family. Leonardo has proved today he can act, but in this, he was very misplaced in the Seaver family.
88survivor 12-01-2006, 08:56 AM The original Harriet Winslow was the only normal woman during the Steve/Stephan era and the only Winslow family member that did not make a fool out of her self. The 2nd replacement of Harriet Winslow was terrible. She had no chemistry with the cast at all, not even her husband.
GSU2004 12-04-2006, 03:13 AM The original Harriet Winslow was the only normal woman during the Steve/Stephan era and the only Winslow family member that did not make a fool out of her self. The 2nd replacement of Harriet Winslow was terrible. She had no chemistry with the cast at all, not even her husband.
JoMarie Payton (the original Harriet) saw the show wasn't going anywhere anymore and she wanted out. I am surprised she lasted as long as she did. She was speaking out against many of the storylines in the early 1990's. Family Matters should have called it quits in Spring 1994.
GSU2004 12-04-2006, 03:23 AM One on One (if they was going to ruin in for season five, then season four should have been the last)
The Parkers (should have been a midseason replacement that was quickly cancelled)
Family Matters (got too goofy and unrealistic for a sitcom in the late 90's)
A Different World (should have ended in spring 92 and spun off into another show, the last season looked like a spinoff)
The Cosby Show (what was the point after 1991)
Amen (should have ended in 1990 like it was supposed to until NBC gave it a last minute renewal)
Night Court (another show that was leaving until they got a last minute renewal from NBC)
Married with Children (should have ended in fall 1995)
All of Us (too predictable, should have been cancelled after the first season)
88survivor 12-04-2006, 02:51 PM JoMarie Payton is very funny and down to earth, too. I shall remember her as the mother in Disorderlies.
eltonfan80 12-04-2006, 06:28 PM JoMarie Payton is very funny and down to earth, too. I shall remember her as the mother in Disorderlies.
:lol:she was also in will and grace
James 12-05-2006, 03:04 AM NYPD Blue and Married ... with Children are two shows that have been listed as having lasted too long, and while I agree, I must say that both should have been canceled as soon as the complaints started coming in. I know some of you will disagree, but I am just expressing my opinion. I'm sorry, but it angers me greatly that the network fatcats seem to have more interest in getting on the wrong side of the Parents Television Council and its allies than entertaining the masses. Also, why is Fox giving Family Guy more chances than Major League Baseball gave Darryl Strawberry or the National Hockey League is giving Todd Bertuzzi?
There, I feel better.
James 12-05-2006, 03:18 AM Oh, and I would also like to lend my voice to the chorus of opinions that The Simpsons should end. It's been nearly ten years since I last watched it.
88survivor 12-05-2006, 05:37 PM Green Acres...should have quit when the early 70s
My Three Sons...should have quit when the 70s, all I have say.
Arby1 12-12-2006, 04:53 PM Jerry Springer - Never should have been on to begin with.
James 12-13-2006, 03:38 AM Jerry Springer - Never should have been on to begin with.
Speaking of whom, did you know his radio show is history? Gone, finito, kaput. Good riddance! I found this out when I learned that Cincinnati's progressive talk station (WCKY 1360) ditched its format, which I find not so surprising considering Air(head) America's problems. It is now "1360 The Source."
Hopefully he'll lose his TV show in the not-so-distant future, perhaps next year!

88survivor 12-15-2006, 03:47 PM So to heck with the Jerry Springer Show.
James 12-16-2006, 03:27 AM I'm surprised nobody's mentioned The Simple Life on the "E!" (or, as I like to call it, "E?" :D) network starring Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. I mean, I can't see more than the square root of viewers for MyNetworkTV's worst performing show watching this train wreck!
Sheesh!
:angryfire
88survivor 12-21-2006, 03:21 AM Couldn't agree more, James.
dav4463 12-22-2006, 04:38 AM Little House on the Prairie
It should have been cancelled when the Ingall's and Oleson's started adopting every wayward youth they could find hoping to recapture the magic of the early years.
88survivor 12-22-2006, 10:24 AM Well, the latter seasons introduced us to a very young Jason Bateman, who would later star in shows like Silver Spoons, It's Your Move, and The Hogan Family.:)
icecream 12-22-2006, 10:58 AM 7th Heaven is a great show, and I'm glad it's still on.

Boy Meets World (I'm a fan of this show, but it should have ended when Cory graduated from high school. I hated the addition of Maitland Ward.)

Yeah, I didn't like Scrubs... but I like King of Queens.
88survivor 12-23-2006, 02:19 PM The more I watch the King of Queens, the more I dislike the show as a whole. I am sorry, but I just could never get into any of the characters in the later years.
noveel 01-08-2007, 06:21 AM BH 90210 was boring in its last few seasons, it lost its original focus after Brandon and Brenda left.
Simpsons: Started to become stale after the 9th season.
King of the Hill: Never grew into this show, how it lasted 11 seasons is anyones guess.
Roseanne: That last season should have never happened.
Boy Meets World: Wasn't the same after high school.
PlayOn 01-08-2007, 07:21 AM The Golden Girls.
It ended right, but why did they give us Golden Palace? I've never seen an episode, but it was dropped like a hot potatoe.
friendsfan77 01-08-2007, 10:56 AM ^ IMO, GP had its moments, but it will never match the greatness that Golden Girls had.

when Bea Arthur decided to leave GG, the creators were open to the idea of going another year and either replacing dorothy with a new roomate or having it be just the four of them, but NBC opted to drop the show (rightfully) and CBS decided it would pick up the show and somehow it was turned into The Golden Palace. and it wasn't good. the ratings were awful, viewers didn't want to see the show w/out Dorothy, which is why Bea Arthur had to come back for a few episodes but nothing worked and it was canned.
88survivor 01-08-2007, 03:17 PM I wondered why I watched BH 90201 still all the way to its finale. Oh, my God...what was I thinking? I even watched the last few seasons and they weren't that good. But the finale sucked! Oh, boy....this is what happens when you watched the show from beginning to end. So did my sister. Actually, she watched when she was three. I was seven when the show started. Why didn't I stopped in the later years, yet everyone still talked about the show.
Chain Gang Member 01-08-2007, 04:29 PM BH 90210 was boring in its last few seasons, it lost its original focus after Brandon and Brenda left.
Oh it's true!It's damn true!
Chain Gang Member 01-08-2007, 04:38 PM Yes The Simpsons has a movie coming out July 27, 2007
I love The Simpsons but that's just a stupid idea
88survivor 01-08-2007, 10:56 PM I know. A movie!! It might have over 300 episodes, but this is ridiculous.
waichingliu81 01-10-2007, 03:59 PM that 70s show and friends- they went on for far too long
88survivor 01-10-2007, 09:07 PM The reason That 70s Show lasted long is because most of the actors wanted to move to other projects as well. Hence, the perfect time for cancelation.

I don't understand, 88survivor. If they wanted to move on, why would that influence the show to last as long as it did? You would think it would end once they upped and left.
88survivor 01-11-2007, 09:08 AM Gee, you get me. It is just that once two main characters leave...they are on to better things. Hell, some of them possibly still do independent film.
Moonlit_Suburb 01-29-2007, 01:40 AM Well, That '70s Show immediately springs to mind. The terrible last season (and to a lesser extent, the subpar penultimate season) actually managed to diminish my interest in the series as a whole...
