View Full Version : How did you learn abour the BIRDS & the BEES?
Ireneparalegal 05-13-2006, 08:17 PM Did someone sit you down and talk to you? did you find out on your own?
I never had a parent tell me. My mom died when I was six, so my older sister (13 years older than me) was my guardian. My dad wasn't going to tell me. My sister never told me. She just basically told me what NOT to do. What NOT to let a guy do. Don't get hickies because people will think you are a slut. I learned from my best friend and my cousin. And even some info wasn't correct. I basically got my education in child development class in high school. Not to mention after meeting my boyfriend who I would end up marrying and divorcing.
Southern Hellraiser 05-13-2006, 08:20 PM I learned everything from the T.V and the internet because my mom sure as hell wouldn't tell me. I just got internet access in December 2004, so I learned most of it from watching T.V.
LuLu Rogers 05-13-2006, 08:21 PM My mother attempted to explain it to me when I was 11, but I really learned everything that I know now from friends at school. I've always been a very sheltered child, LOL. :p I fact, I thought the "G-spot" was a club that older kids went to when I was 13.
Brian Damage 05-13-2006, 08:22 PM I had hands on training.
Janice 05-13-2006, 08:31 PM I sort of just figured things out. I'm smart that way. ;) I had two older sisters who had boyfriends. I never got "the talk" from either of my parents.
Nighthawk76 05-13-2006, 08:35 PM I still don't know about the birds and the bees.
Kazza 05-13-2006, 08:36 PM My parents never explained a thing to me; not even when my period started.
I don't want my dd's to grow up the same way; that's why I've been searching and buying books easy enough for them to understand the changes they'll go through.
EmoJoe 05-13-2006, 08:39 PM my mom told me in the car one day going to the park when i was like 9  she just told be the basics, though. and then when i was 10-ish/11-ish she told me the rest of it.
Mr. Television 05-13-2006, 08:47 PM I just learned things as I went along. Nobody explained anything to me.
Chelsea 05-13-2006, 08:49 PM Yeah, definitely didn't learn from my parents.....Mom was raising me solo, and, well...just...no. As for Dad, something to be remembered: I didn't see him at any point between the late eighties and 2005. So, yeah, TV, internet, and friends. Essentially, once I got to the curious age, when I'd, say, hear something from a friend, or on TV, I'd wind up cross-checking it with the internet. Of course, this was in the days before a lot of resources like Wikipedia, so....
PZelda 05-13-2006, 08:51 PM  My parents never told me about it. I just went up to them and told them I knew. That was after I took sex ed, of course.
By the way, I was 8 (3rd grade) and a friend was 10 when we both discovered this sex ed book in the school library. I must've read that book 10 times...it fascinated me. So, by the time I got to 6th grade and had an actual sex ed class, I already knew quite a bit. I am so glad I learned about it at an early age, so I knew what to do when I finally did it for the first time.
Courtnee 05-13-2006, 09:00 PM books from the library haha
great thread idea btw
~LadyJess~ 05-13-2006, 09:24 PM My parents never really told me. My mom tried to once but I got embarrased and didn't want to listen to her because by that point I had learned quite a bit from my friends who had older siblings.
Jo_Luvs_Ketchup 05-13-2006, 09:24 PM I went outside and looked up in the trees. Nothing about it Irene! ;)
 Well actually no one has discussed it with me yet. My mom's wondering where I'm getting all my dirty jokes
Buffyboy323 05-13-2006, 09:26 PM Uuum...I found a tape and put it in the VCR......and it all took off from there. I learned to do something else from that too! ;)
Tuesday Weld 05-13-2006, 09:28 PM I learned it all on my own.
Dr. John Becker 05-13-2006, 09:51 PM Did someone sit you down and talk to you? did you find out on your own?

If I had waited for my parents to explain it to me, I'd never have a kid on the way now.

Michael [hXc] 05-14-2006, 07:59 AM i'm 14 and my mom still isn't telling me anything  or my dad, either, he goes to a born again christian church that is VERY against any sexual contact before marriage
i basically learned all i know from my friends, who heard it from their parents.
Penny Lane 05-14-2006, 11:10 AM No one told. My Mom was of the 40's generation and didn't mention "those things" Which is not good because I was totally ignorant of the facts of life until my teens where I picked up things and false information on the proverbial street. bad bad bad ohno: I am still waiting for mom to have "the talk" with me:lol:
ABlairican Pie 05-14-2006, 01:01 PM I had hands on training.:nod: ;)
ABlairican Pie 05-14-2006, 01:11 PM I basically read a book from the 60's all about sex and such, it was actually very informative and sophisticated for its time, the author made made it sound very personable and as if he understood your questions and thoughts. Oh yes, I got all *hot and bothered* reading it, it was very interesting and informative, and of course, at the age of 12, anything about sex was a cause of horniness and titillation. This was about 30 years ago.
Of course, anything I really learned about the facts of life I learned from THE FACTS OF LIFE!!!!! Blair, Tootie, Natalie, Jo, and Mrs. G.!!!! :D
TheGreatPretender 05-14-2006, 03:21 PM 7th Heaven and South Park.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 05-14-2006, 03:23 PM I pretty much figured it out myself and had a friend who knew EVERYTHING. lmao, my parents didn't tell me anything. And then tv, of course.

Yooch 05-14-2006, 05:02 PM When I was twelve, talking with friends, piecing together bits of information--it all made sense. It was an 'epiphany' experience, kind of like realizing the truth about Santa Claus.
Mr. Television 05-14-2006, 05:05 PM When I was twelve, talking with friends, piecing together bits of information--it all made sense. It was an 'epiphany' experience, kind of like realizing the truth about Santa Claus.

Yooch 05-14-2006, 05:13 PM I never caught my parents being Santa, but eventually arrived at the conclusion. It wasn't traumatic. I just kind of knew, at some point.
Jo_Luvs_Ketchup 05-14-2006, 05:29 PM WHAT TRUTH ABOUT SANTA???? :(
Yooch 05-14-2006, 05:37 PM Oops!! Sorry!!:(
seventies_sitcoms 05-14-2006, 05:55 PM Nobody told me crap. I just learned it on my own which was tough anyway.
I do remember our high school health class teacher bringing in different birth control things in. She talked to the class about gels, sponges, and all that. I remember when she demonstrating a condom on her finger the whole class was just dying. I remember too she said something like "Protect yourself. It's not funny. Don't die for it. It is not worth it." Ummm. I sure there a lot she DIDN'T teach.
Jewel Atkins song: The Birds and the Bees.
"Let me tell you about the birds and the bees
and the flowers and the trees
and the moon up above
and a thing called love.
Let me tell you about the stars in the sky
and a girl and a guy
and a way they kiss
on a night like this
When I look into your big brown eyes
its a very blame to see
that it's time you learned about the facts of life
starting from A to Z :)

swedeace 05-14-2006, 11:13 PM I'm joining the majority of you who have never received "the talk" from parents. In my house, it felt like the topic of sex was always such a taboo that I played along to it. Whenever I was watching TV with my parents, I would pretend I was oblivious over the sexual topics/scenes. I basically learned how to become self taught in the area.
I found out in school (sex ed), peers, TV/movies (mostly sitcoms), and resources (books, internet, dictionary, CD-ROMs of the human body, etc....). Mostly, I did my own research and found out a lot of things on my own....
My mom told me that she was never taught about her period, so she was wondering what was going on the day she got her first period! And, she is the eldest child/daughter! What a shock it was for her! I mean - imagine NOT knowing what is going on with your body??? My mom had four other sisters and five brothers, so they were a large old-fashioned Mexican family. I guess my grandma had so many children all at different age ranges that she didn't understand how to teach them about their bodies and puberty, I guess.... I know my grandma had to be married to my grandpa when she was 12, and she didn't grow up with her mother. So that explains her less-than-knowledgeable on puberty/sex as well. Yikes....
Ireneparalegal 05-15-2006, 12:02 AM Yeah, like I said, my mom just explained it to my brother and I briefly. She sat us down at the kitchen table and said, "It's when the boy puts his ___ in the girls ___." And she said it just like that... she didnt say penis or vagina or anything! I mostly found out from friends or on my own. School taught us about our periods, but didnt really address sex until middle school. TV and internet are good resources to find things out. ;)
My mom said that when her grandma started her period, she thought she was bleeding to death. I mean, can you imagine the horror of that?
*irene having visions of the movie CARRIE*
Brad Russ 05-15-2006, 12:56 AM I had hands on training.
