It was a classic dramatic sitcom moment. I don't know how it affects those who have seen it numerous times. Seeing it for the first time really wiped me out. Ireneparalegal 05-13-2006, 12:00 AM I don't know how it affects those who have seen it numerous times. Seeing it for the first time really wiped me out. i cry every time i see it. it hurts. Mr. Television 05-13-2006, 12:50 AM It's a very sad episode. It should never have happened. Ireneparalegal 05-13-2006, 01:04 AM It's a very sad episode. It should never have happened. Exactly. Plbrown046 05-13-2006, 10:59 AM I now only watch the eps with James in them.... TVFactFan 05-13-2006, 11:19 AM Thank you Brian, for letting me know the funeral episode was on. I just cried like a baby over that final scene with Florida in the kitchen. That was very sad. I see that scene being shocking if you don't know it's coming. Janice Imagine if you watched that ep for the first time on 9/29/1976. WOW! retrochick9 05-13-2006, 12:02 PM I see that scene being shocking if you don't know it's coming. Janice Imagine if you watched that ep for the first time on 9/29/1976. WOW! Yeah, I imagine people were genuinely shocked and upset. Ireneparalegal 05-13-2006, 12:23 PM Yeah, I imagine people were genuinely shocked and upset. I know I WAS!!!!!! Especially since the only other character to be "killed off" at that time was in M*A*S*H. James has the status of being the second character in tv history of being killed off. Not something expected and surely not something deserved. jenjen 05-13-2006, 04:43 PM I always wondered why they used a telegram, how come they didnt' get a phone call? It would have been just as powerful and shocking. If someone you knew were to die suddenly and his spouse were out of the state, wouldn't your first instinct be to call? I find it hard to watch too...it's still sad even though you know its coming after all of these years! Ireneparalegal 05-13-2006, 04:50 PM I always wondered why they used a telegram, how come they didnt' get a phone call? It would have been just as powerful and shocking. If someone you knew were to die suddenly and his spouse were out of the state, wouldn't your first instinct be to call? I find it hard to watch too...it's still sad even though you know its coming after all of these years! That is another mystery question I await an answer for. I asked that when this episode aired the first time in the Summer. I mean, who the hell tells someone their loved one died in a telegram??? 1970's is NOT THE 1800's where telegrams were the norm...i just don't get it. Back when they first showed GT and I saw this episode, they had me believing that's what happens when your loved one dies out of state. What a shocker! Besides, I am still confused abt the whole telegram bit? wtf???? i don't get it. why would the people downstairs send a telegram??? are they jokes? please!!!!!   Brian Damage 05-13-2006, 07:29 PM Well, they were moving, maybe they told the phone company to shut off their phone. Ireneparalegal 05-13-2006, 07:33 PM That still doesn't make sense. The phone company (even back in those days) could turn the phone off the day you leave. The family still had two days to live there. And still assume the phone was off, someone from the police dept. or the coroners office is supposed to find the next of kin to deliver the news. Also, why were they worried abt being evicted before they moved? Bookman can't throw them out that fast. And besides, the family should give notice! I own an apt. building and I must give notice for certain things and my tenants must give me notice for things such as moving. Brian Damage 05-13-2006, 07:56 PM That still doesn't make sense.
