She got her own spinoff and her chemistry with George was what made the show so funny.

She defintely OUTSHINED Louise on this show but was always close but not quite on the same level as George.

Most def. When she left to do her own thing and had that latin maid, it wasn't the same. I mean, once you get used to a character/person, you can't just trade them in for another model. Florence was a huge co-star...her character just didn't work without George and at times Louise.

Seeing Marla with George on the Surreal Life, even though it was a short moment, their going back and forth like Florence and George just brought back memories. Nothing like it will ever compare.

Even though Florence was hilarious as hell, I still think George was the star.

That's an excellent point about Florence, once she left, the show was definitely missing something. There wasn't that same fire out of George.

That's when the show really jumped the shark because for a second, it was no FLORENCE or Bentley

She was very important to the show and when she left it was not the same. But I still think George was the star of the show.

If Checking In had become a hit I wonder how long The Jeffersons would have last without Florence?

Well they had a replacement for Florence so It probably would have lasted about the same

Yes, I think she made the show funny, her and George feed off of each other. When she left he show wasn't funny anymore, kinda like when John left GT, something was missing.

I'm saying that when she left that energy was gone, the show wasn't the same.

exactly. i mean, i would watch the jeffersons and it was such a letdown. I mean, it's like expecting a brand new car and getting a ten year old used car.

I didn't care for her replacement. I wonder how the rest of the audience would have accepted her?

I can't believe you posted this...How can you compare that maid with Florence? They had lightening in a bottle with Florence...she was damn lucky to be soooo good that she was able to come back and allow the jeffersons to continue and last longer than it would have with that other lady. The viewers weren't too keen abt Flo's replacement.

They didn't give her chance to SHINE, they got rid of her when Florence spinoff failed

of course they got rid of her, because Marla was coming back. The viewers wanted Florence back. They didn't like her in her own show, they made it clear they wanted her back. So did I. Had the latin maid been the one they stuck with from the beginning, she would have been good, but remember what i posted before what Marla said. Marla wasn't supposed to be a regular...she didn't even get offered a contract until after 8 episodes.

They tried to replace Don Knotts on the Andy Griffith Show after he left but it failed and the actor was fired. Some people just can't be replaced.

Well Marla Gibbs was lucky because usually when your spinoff fail you can't return to the parent show

I seem to recall there was a clause in her contract that she could return should the show fail.
You can't compare Florence to any other character. She helped with the comedy, the funny stuff, the interacting with George, they needed her back!!!! it wasn't like Good Times where they tried to bring back the spark of the show by bringing back Esther, but it was the overall show that was going downhill.

They signed a contract that said they couldn't return if their show failed. They didn't realize this until after their spin-off was cancelled. They were shocked.

Yea I read about that. It was stated if the show was canceled within a year they could return but since The Ropers aired a year and a half they were out of luck. I think if they hadn't got Don Knotts and the ratings were falling they would have been back. In Hollywood, ratings are all that matters.

Yeah, that's it. you got it. it was that six months that got them. But even so, it didn't take a year for the fans to accept Don Knotts. At least, not for me it didn't.

If Marla Gibbs didn't return, I don't see how this show would've lasted as long as it did. The Florence/George dynamic is what made this show as successful as it was.

I agree the George/Florence Dynamic was the thing that viewers like to see but i could see the show still running to 85 with the other characters

Just seeing Marla and Sherman on Living In TVLand and Surreal Life, those little moments of them together are humorous. They just bring together this magnetism that no one else can bring.

The season 1 Florence was not as WILD in George's Presence as she was in the seasons after-lol She was intimidated by him at first
