View Full Version : I think Shirley should have stayed at the Balloon Company
TVFactFan 05-02-2006, 11:07 AM regardless of she was hired for being black or not. She could have learned a lot by watching the other girl, and picked up some phone communication skills from Liz, and used that exprience and the skills she got from that job and appplied for another secretary job. Then after a while she could have developed a friendship wit the other workers and who's knows. But I feel should she have used that job as a stepping stone and eventaully aplplied to skills somewhere else. It would have been much better than going back to rob's place and being a waitress. We all know that Shirley wasn't QUALIFIED to work in a office but she could have LEARNED if she had stayed with the company. She basically was going to be paid to learn and observe, and not only that, she could have came up with some other ways to help out around the office. I think shirley gave up too easily.
Brian Damage 05-02-2006, 11:14 AM I agree, Rob's was such a dead end job. Shirley should have swallowed her pride and kept her job.

Exactly, she was supposed to show them that she is office material and not just someone to sit and do nothing. And it appeared she never worked on her typing skills because she never left Rob;s place again-lol
Brian Damage 05-02-2006, 11:23 AM It was almost as if She didn't want to advance herself.

And she could have been a little more NICER to Liz since she was meeting her for the first time and not all ghetto. And more importanly she should have CUT that hair down since she was going on a interview
Brian Damage 05-02-2006, 11:40 AM I don't know if big afros were more acceptable in the business world in the 70's, so I can't comment.

Big Afro's are not acceptable at all in the business world-lol Shirley didn't show any class at all and was looking like Tito's Jackson Sister, Shirley Jackson-lol
GSU2004 05-03-2006, 09:44 PM This episode was well written and produced but after reading over this thread I think Mabel would have been better in this role rather than Shirley. Mabel probably would have stayed at the job and should them how black people can do anything. Given that humor was probably the intended purpose of the episode, I can see why Shirley was chosen instead.

Mabel would have defintely made a better impression on the workers.

They could have used that to give Mabel the better job she wanted for her character.

Yeah, i always wondered about this too. Maybe Shirley realized that office work wasnt for her and she liked being a waitress better who knows..
I have heard people say that many people have a love/hate relationship with service jobs like that.. She did become a part owner of the restaurant in whats happening now, right?
This could be a case of different strokes for different folks... I know this one guy who is very smart, has a high iq and is a college graduate, but the job he enjoyed most was as a manager at a fast food place, go figure, i would think he would hate something like that...

Rob's Place was all she knew and she was afraid of trying something new

i do agree with the original poster that Shirley should have given the balloon company more of a chance.
Mr. Drucker 03-30-2013, 11:22 AM I think Shirley may have been too busy helping Rog,Dwayne and Rerun make bootleg Doobie Brothers records!

Yup, it was a step up in the work world and she refused to change

I just watched part of this episode again on youtube after not seeing it for years. It is surprising she gave up so easily after basically leaving Rob in the lurch and telling him she was "moving up" in the world.. She let her anger at the owner of the balloon company owner get the better of her. He seemed apologetic so i think she could have stayed for a while.

That ep is on youtube???? Thanks I will watch later tonight
*ROGER* 03-30-2013, 09:14 PM OK, so Shirley was slow at typing, she didn't know about filing or other clerical stuff, but that's what on-the-job training is for. She could have learned a lot from the other secretary. So regardless of being hired because she's black, I think she should have stayed at the balloon company. She would have had secretarial experience and that would look good on a resume if she ever decided to become a secretary somewhere else. Shirley was foolish. They took advantage of her because of her race, well, she should have taken advantage of them right back. And by taking advantage, I mean that Shirley should have taken advantage of the opportunity to learn some secretarial skills.

She could have made a lot more money than she made at Rob's Place. She would be lucky if she got a tip on a ten cent soda.

She was intimidated by the office environment:lol:

She should have gotten over herself and take a chance on learning some office skills. She could have learned at her own pace, too. There was no way that balloon company would ever fire her.

Another GOOD POINT which makes her decision so stupid:lol:

What was the purpose of having Shirley no longer at Rob's Place....if she would have taken that job at the balloon company full time, then Rob's Place would have went out of business; because the people only came their because of Shirley. I think Shirley should have taken the Balloon job part time and part time at Rob's place .....gather and learn all business skills and then start her own business establishment.

I still think she should have taken advantage of the opportunity to gain experience and network so that she could be in a better job. I mean who cares if she wasn't doing anything, she could have learned by asking the other girl and becoming friends and would have been able to develop new skills and no longer be working at a dirty a$$ soda shop:lol:
