James was the star of this show to me and was the most entertaining when he was upset about something. His character was very REAL, and not buffoonish and he is one of the most underrated Sitcom characters in TV history. To me J.J was the Co-star.

Solomon, you didn't pose the question right. I tune in to see James now, but initially, it was JJ that got me hooked. The question should be, was JJ a star of Good Times during the 70's?

That is correct. When I first started watching Good Times, it was because of JJ. He was a major star in the 1970's and if he left the show I don't thing Good Times would have lasted as long as it did. Watching the shows now, I still like JJ but I really do enjoy James and the shows after he left are just not as good.

When I first started to watch GT James was already killed off. Janet jackson got me hooked on the show, when I first tuned in "The Evans get involved" were the first episodes I saw.

James, and those tights pants that he wore...

Besides James tight pants, what was it that you like about the character?

I thought James Evans was an exceptional passionate character; he gave a lot of depth to the show Good Times; also I loved the chemistry between him and Florida Evans, they blended well together; also his straight man routine with JJ's goofiness was hilarious and beautifully acted. And Solomon, I was just being facetious about the (tight pants) remark.."I was just being silly";)

Tara?

Yeah yeah yeah, it is me; I had to re-register after someone hacked into my computer and literally erased vital information (like passcodes, and emails, it is a long story) but I am back under this new name.

I had to to think for a second and say, "a new user is calling me Solomon?-lo Who is this?l

I watched it for JJ. I enjoyed the banter between JJ and John Amos.

That's another thing that was lost when John Amos left the show. They really were great together.

When I found out GT was going to be on TVLand, I was excited because I remembered that I liked the show because it was funny, period. I liked how the whole family interacted, it seemed real to me. As far as JJ's character, I think people are so annoying when they berate it. If you look at things realistically, how was someone living in those conditions supposed to act? Would it have been better to have him be some bitter person who resorts to drugs and crap like that, or someone who laughs instead of cries? Some people are natually goofy like that and like to make people feel good. When it came to serious issues on the show, you could tell he cared about people. Like when he stood up for Thelma when she was engaged, etc.

James was the MAN. His exchanges with Junior were priceless - and one of the many things I missed once James was gone. :(

If there was any single character id have watched for , it would have been Florida, who i enjoyed as Maude's maid...wheras I had no opinion on James, and found JJ annoying with his moldy old catchphrase.

Rich has made his support of the Willona character on several other threads here on GT. He doesn't need to repeat himself.

Actually there is nothing silly about my statement. If you want to know why I feel the way I do, then just ask "Why do you think this?" I'll be happy to explain myself.

First off, James and JJ are not the only characters on the show. And if they were, I never would have watched the show. Neither was that appealing to me. JJ was a cloying caricature and James way too myopic in the way he looked at things;, Jame's heart though, was clearly in the right place.

The reasons I like Willona and why she is the main reason I watched are because I thought she was the most complex character--warm, kindhearted, tough, soft, and with a real temper--but a temper directed at injustice and toward fixing it. These may sound like contradictions but Willona welded them into a fine human mosaic. Florida may have been decent and upright, James a good man but overly proud, but Willona was, IMO, one of the most kind-hearted characters on TV and I adore her. The key reason I feel this way is because she rescued Penny from an abusive mother and then later adopted Penny. Willona was outraged at the way Penny was abused and when she saw the burn mark on Penny from the iron--I thought she was going to kill Penny's mother. Willona shows Penny tenderness and kindness--that not all adults are disturbed or cruel. I hope this answers your question.

Thanks. I love The Jeffersons, so if you start a debate thread there I'll join in if I can. The Jefferson had many great characters. It is a fine Norman Lear spin-off. But then it spun off from an epic show--one of the greatest on TV--and in this instance, the apple didn't fall far from the tree!
