Hey kids, TJL here.
There was nothing much to do at work last week, so I had the chance to work on a project I had been thinking about for a while.
Here is a pic of the table I made. You'll notice I used a special piece of metal for the tabletop.
Let me know what you think.
Courtnee 04-30-2006, 12:41 PM cute :)
Mikado 04-30-2006, 12:53 PM Is that a sewer cap?? Well, I sure wouldnt think its likely to be stolen, as it probably weighs about 80lbs

Good guess. The whole thing weighs 86 pounds.
Still bored at workthis week, so I made something else yesterday. It's a plantstand I made from some odd shaped steel rods and a 3 inch ring we used for a fancy gate project.
MsOrange 05-04-2006, 08:33 PM impressive...
that tables looks good enough to eat off of!! IF you can get the image out of your head
seriously, those are awesome
Pitooey 05-04-2006, 09:10 PM Hiya TJL that plant stand looks cool. Where are you going to put the table? That looks cool too.
I've been thinking of doing some projects myself with some plant pots. If I ever get to it I'll post it here too. ;)

Thank you.
The table is up for grabs between any of my friends. If the guy who suggested the idea to me wants it, he can have it. I was thinking of putting it on display at my local bar, because some people there want to get a look at it. It's going to be a pain to transport though.
I'll post a few more pics of the "finished" table tomorrow. It looks much better now than in the pics above.
Janice 05-04-2006, 09:33 PM Very clever and unique TJL. You should market these things, bachelor style items. :)
Okay, here are a few more pics to bug you with.
This is the "finished" tabletop. It's been cleaned with a grinder (with a wire wheel attachment to clean the dirt and rust off without damaging the surface) and painted with a clear coat spray which will keep it from rusting again. It darkened the metal a bit and it has a nice shine, plus all the nicks and scrathes on the surface really give it character.
Stormtracker TF 05-05-2006, 05:08 PM That's a really interesting idea, TJL. Good job. Looks nice.
We also built a second base out of a piece of 8 inch pipe with a flange already welded on the bottom.
The tabletop is removable. Clever huh?
Actually no, the manhole cover is made out of cast iron, which you cannot weld. So the cover sits on top of the base. We'll try to figure a way to attach it to the plate that's welded on the top of the pipe. Maybe we'll drill some holes and try some screws or something.
Also, this table can tip over pretty easy, but the idea is to drill holes and anchor it to the concrete on a patio.
The original four leg base we built last week is nice, but kinda plain. I'm hoping to build something a little more fancy, or maybe find an iron table and swap the top for mine.
Let me know what you think.
MsOrange 05-05-2006, 06:24 PM TJL, those are seriously awesome. LIke Janice said you should consider marketing this stuff. What do you do anyway (for a living?)

Thank you. I'm more than just a pretty face. ;)
I work for a small construction company. We specialize in steelwork. We do lots of welding and we make railings, stairways, and other structural work.
It's fun doing projects like this every once in a while.
Considering we've been slow the past two weeks, I wouldn't mind if we started making some of this kind of stuff to sell.
My co worker and I probably had more fun making this table than we've had on any other job in recent memory.
Okay, this is the last picture, I swear.
Well, it's done. Again, there have been more modifications. A friend suggested using some wheels to make this heavy thing movable, so that's what I did.
Check it out. Guess how much it weighs now!
;)
Cactus Jack 05-09-2006, 09:38 PM Cool pics!!!:D
Pitooey 05-09-2006, 09:42 PM It looks like it weighs say......... 80 pounds? How much does it weigh?
I like the base.

127 pounds.
Luckily it comes apart.
Okay, final update.
The manhole table is now on semi permanent display in the downstairs lounge area at my beloved bar, The Gaf.
It was a major pain in the butt getting it there (I went to the shop today, took the table apart, loaded it into the truck, took it into NYC, brought the pieces to my apratment - five flights of stairs - then brought the truck back to the shop and came back to the city, took the pieces down to the Gaf when they opened at 5, and reassembled it there) but it was worth it.
So, if you're ever in NYC, stop by the Gaf and take a look.
Hopefully, I'll make a few more someday.
But if you want one, I don't deliver!!!
;)
