View Full Version : Did anybody else think that Deeeluxe Apartment in the Sky...
Brian Damage 04-25-2006, 10:10 PM ...was a bit too small? I mean George was supposed to be making some big bucks, so why such a small place? They moved from a bigger house in Queens to this small apartment in Manhattan. They should've gave them a house or a penthouse like Mr. Drummond. lol

actually back then watching this it was very nice and looked like something a rich person would have. However, I am not from New York, so I guess a New Yorker would know better. Looking back, it did seem small. But isn't the price one pays for an apt./condo etc. in New York, aren't they really paying for views?
Brian Damage 04-25-2006, 11:29 PM In New York, it is all about location, location, but seeing this place now, it seems waaay too small. I mean what were there, two bedrooms?

one master bedroom, one for Lionel and Florence had a small room.
Brian Damage 04-25-2006, 11:37 PM The living room was the biggest room in the whole place. lol
Brieannas21 04-25-2006, 11:53 PM I think that the Jeffersons House and their apartment was about neck in neck size wise. Niether one had a formal Dining Room and both had small kitchens. Although in their house the kitchen was a tad bit bigger. Also in their house they only had one bathroom, while in the apartment they had 4 johns as George would put it.
Brian Damage 04-25-2006, 11:59 PM Four bathrooms? I only know of two. One by the front door and one in the master bedroom.
Ireneparalegal 04-26-2006, 12:00 AM Four bathrooms? I only know of two. One by the front door and one in the master bedroom.
yeah, maybe Lionel had one in his room, but then where would the fourth one fit?

Yeah in the first epsiode of the Jefferson, George was running room to room flushing the toilets and counting

Mother Jefferson seemed to have a room whenever she stayed with them because she would get up off the couch and say she was going to go take a nap. I'm thinking that may be the same room that Florence eventually moved into.

You sound like Mother Jefferson-lol

4 Johns NO WAITING-lol

Maybe Florence had one in her room too, lol.
Pitooey 04-26-2006, 09:25 AM As a New Yorker ;) They had a nice apartment in the sky. It had a view and a balcony. I imagined that the apartment was bigger and had great views of the city. They had a doorman, elevators.... the place was clean. NYC has some small apartments but I've also seen beautiful humongous ones. They didn't have a humongous apartment but for them it was just right.
When you got money in NYC you can have the whole view of Manhattan.

I remember mother jefferson saying-"this is place is kind of small-lol
Brian Damage 04-26-2006, 11:00 AM You sound like Mother Jefferson-lol
You don't think it was small for the kind of money they had?
retrochick9 04-26-2006, 01:10 PM You don't think it was small for the kind of money they had?
I've heard you don't get much for your money in NYC, or California.

That's true in NY, it is a high price for living.

I was saying that that's what Mother Jefferson said the first time she walked in their apt

Well, she was right! LOL

it depends where in California. Here where I live, it's a beach, agriculture community. The perfect spot for weather and location. Houses are expensive. Rent is crazy. And yet, we have the biggest population in the county! Up north abt an two hours away, away from the beach you can get the same kinda house there as you can here for HALF THE PRICE. Alot of first time homeowners buy up there, wait for equity to build and then come back here to buy a home. The average price for a home here is abt $500,000

True, one of my best friends lives in CA and I can't believe the equity they built in just a few years!!!
Pug Lover 05-13-2006, 08:39 PM I never quit understood the hallway design in their apartment. The corridor itself appeared to change direction when you came to the bedrooms. It almost looked as if the bedroom corridor was a seperate room.

When heading to the bedroom everyone went right, Florence, Mother Jefferson, george and weezie, so i wonder why no one ever went left-lol

Maybe there was a "closet" there, since there wouldn't have been enough room for a bedroom or anything big.
Ireneparalegal 05-13-2006, 11:51 PM no one went left because then they would hit the wall. if it weren't for that wall, they would fall down the side of the building. that's why there was a very tiny patio there.

Yeah but when you look down their hall, it looks as if you can turn left. That's why I said there might have been a "closet" there LOL.
Yooch 05-14-2006, 12:02 AM I'm thinking the Jefferson's lived on the upper East Side, like in the E. 70's, just off Central Park. There are lots of nice buildings there with doormen and elevators--and the long awnings out front. Plus, their neighbor, Bentley, worked at the UN, which is also on the east side of Manhattan, which would be in close proximity.

I can always count on you to say something WILD-LOL-LOL-LMAO
Janice 05-14-2006, 12:59 AM Oh for Heaven's sake, it's only a show.
I'm kidding.
I agree with Brian. The Jeffersons were loaded, and their place seemed small for how rich they were. They should have been living at the Dakota or the apartment building where Jackie Onassis lived. I've heard that her place was huge...a couple of floors.
They probably kept the Jefferson's place compact for set design concerns and easier filming.

Watching this show, i always said it was small to me, but like you said, 30 years ago, that was considered large and fancy i guess.
mini mo 05-17-2006, 11:57 PM As a former midwesterner, and current New Yorker, I've always liked the apartment. When Louise hired Florence, she told her that the apartment had four bathrooms (which I'm guessing includes the half bath in the foyer). Today, an apartment on the east side with a terrace, enclosed kitchen, 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms would go for at least $2.5 million.
Plus the Jeffersons and the Willises were never meant to be independently wealthy - just well off.

Well, if that is the case, then why did the Jeffersons buy the Belair mansion? LOL
