View Full Version : Shows you didn't understand why they weren't more popular or why they were so hated.
Chocoholic 04-24-2006, 05:26 PM This is in response to Irene's thread about shows that you never understood what all the hoopla was about. What shows do you think should have been more popular or were often unfairly criticized? Here are a couple of mine...
Wings- I could never understand the criticism towards this show. It's always been a favorite of mine. It's often referred to as a bad Cheers rip-off, but I think both shows are great in their own way. I like it a heck of a lot more than I like some of the popular megahits uot there.
Two Guys and a Girl- OK, it wasn't a great show, but I still think it was funny and could have been more popular. It was written off as a bad Friends clone, but I think it's far more enjoyable than that overrated Friends.
Becker- Again, not a classic, but still a fun show to watch. It's better than just about anything else that passes for comedy these days.
Futurama- Nowhere near as good as The Simpsons (What is?) but certainly deserved much better treatment from FOX.
Scrubs- Are NBC and the awards show judges the only people who hate this show?
Mr. Television 04-24-2006, 05:30 PM Titus and Norm- 2 of my favorite Underrated shows. I agree with you about 2 Guys And A Girl. That show was much more entertaining to me than Friends. I can't believe ABC Burried it on a Friday night during its last season. Another show I really enjoyed was Grounded For Life but it never was that big of a hit.
Mr. Television 04-24-2006, 05:37 PM Im glad Im not the only one that feels that way about Becker. I didnt catch this show in its original run, but I've been watching it on tbs and I love it. I love his views on life.
I also thought Cosby was a good show. And I think it would have lasted longer if people wouldnt have compared it to The Cosby Show so much.
Cosby was a pretty good show. I always liked Madeline Kahn.

snl 70s show fan 04-24-2006, 05:42 PM i never really understood why everyboddy hated hello larry ok so its not an emmy winner but its no where near as bad as legand has it also i never got why people didnt like wings ether i always enjoyed it same with scrubs
Mikado 04-25-2006, 02:46 AM Square Pegs and My mother the Car...ok i know MMTC is thought of as the WORST sitcom to ever make the regualr TV schedule...but hey, i was 4 , and i thought the CAR was sooooo cool...all I remember about the show, only reason i liked it ;)
Brian Damage 04-25-2006, 11:12 AM Titus and Norm- 2 of my favorite Underrated shows.
I absolutely agree with you on these two shows. I thought both shows were hysterical.
I also enjoyed Joey a lot.
Raisingdad2004 04-25-2006, 11:36 AM Becker, atleast its not dumb - same every episode (that means you Raymond) CBS comedy.
Scrubs, atleast critics like it.
Brieannas21 04-25-2006, 03:10 PM Cosby was a pretty good show. I always liked Madeline Kahn.
Yeah I would say Cosby, It was truly a funny show.

My list is

Fresh Prince
Married with Children

Agreed....though I do like it more than The Simpsons.
Adamantium 04-25-2006, 04:57 PM Agreed....though I do like it more than The Simpsons.
I agree with you.
I Love Futurama and only like The Simpsons. The Simpsons was great when I was younger, but I've just lost interest in it (though I will see the movie).
NewsRadio - I don't get why this show wasn't always in the top 10. It was always funny. Luckily the DVD sales are good and I'll get the entire series in my collection. But I still wish it had been a more mainstream hit. I'm glad at least that the critics liked the show. I blame NBC for the low ratings. They moved it around too much. Just as it was starting to build in the ratings, they moved it to Wednesdays, which totally ruined the ratings for it. Its a miracle, the show lasted two more seasons after that. Like the creator of the show, Paul Simms said about NewsRadio "It's the longest running failure in network history." lol
I liked "My Mother the Car" (though I've only seen it once in a TVLand marathon). I went to a museum and saw the actual car.

I can understand some of those but not Married With Children. It was on 11 years some people must have liked it. I don't know much about it outside the ratings but I guess critics did not like it, is that right?

Critics didn't like it and it was not a highly rated show

hmm, that is surprising. I assumed that since it was on so long it is popular. I guess that is why the DVD's are not selling that well.
Ireneparalegal 04-25-2006, 08:58 PM Becker
Titus
I got into Becker after it was no longer on prime-time.
Titus was hilarious. I really like it alot.
James 04-26-2006, 03:09 AM Here is my list of shows I thought could have used more popularity:
American Dreams
Brooklyn Bridge
Family Matters
Joan of Arcadia
Life with Bonnie
Our House
Perfect Strangers
State of Grace
Step By Step
Three Wishes
The Wonder Years
slackermonkey 04-28-2006, 03:17 AM "Scrubs." I like "Arrested Development" too, but it's such a niche show that it's a wonder it even lasted three seasons on network television. It would have been much better suited for cable, imo. Too bad that Showtime deal fell through.
jkalen 04-28-2006, 11:23 AM I also enjoyed Joey a lot.
I really like Joey as well, you just have to watch it for what it is. Itīs unnecessary to compare it with anything else, really. To me itīs FUNNY!
Brad Russ 05-01-2006, 07:43 PM The Wonder Years was a pretty popular show, but I never understood why it didn't enjoy the success of shows like All In The Family, Roseanne, and MASH. In my opinion, the Wonder Years is one of the top 3 shows ever!!!
Buffyboy323 05-02-2006, 07:56 PM "2 Guys and a Girl" and "Unhappily"...Ever After". And these days, I would have to Say "Veronica Mars", but I actually kinda like it like that. It feels like it's My show, kinda like songs you love and don't want them to get all top 40 on ya.
tdf4077 05-07-2006, 08:47 PM Herman's Head!!! I loved that show! Philly was also pretty good...just a bad time slot?
Central Perk 05-09-2006, 07:06 PM Andy Richter Controls the Universe
Arrested Development
