View Full Version : It IS "Just A Show"
Dr. Thong 04-23-2006, 07:25 PM I know that what I'm about to say will probably rankle at least one member here, but I think it needs to be said...
..."It is 'just a show.'"
The reason I say this is because a couple of people have been taken to task by some members here because they either used that exact phrase or implied it in something they posted here.
Yes, I can analyze and go on about my favorite shows and what I like about them, what I don't like about them, etc... But in the final analysis, they are just that, TV shows.
They don't cure cancer, they won't pay my bills, they won't solve the world's problems. That doesn't mean that they don't have some significance - after all, they do provide diversions from our lives and give us a common purpose as members here. I certainly am not trying to diminish that in anyway.
But to take someone to task because they have the attitude that "It's just a show" is wrong in my opinion. If someone states their case articulately and in a non-threatening manner, no one should get their hackles up about it. Besides, getting your hackles up is what the political forum is for.:D
I like to have fun analyzing the minutiae of my favorite movies & shows, but in the end, they are just entertainment.
Now, if anyone wants to challenge me and try to make the case that Jennifer Lopez can act or That '70s Show is funny....
BRING IT ON!!!!:mad::crazy: :D :cool:
Mr. Television 04-23-2006, 07:42 PM The last thread about this was locked. I don't know if this is a good idea. One longtime member already left because of it. I think everyone knows its just a tv show. What some people are mad at is that when a discussion goes on, somebody will cut in with that obvious statement. Everyone knows its a tv show but when that statement is made it seems that they are talking down to the people having that discussion. Thats the way it seems anyway even if they don't intend it to be. I'm done talking about it . I think everything was said in the other thread.
BTW Jennifer Lopez sucks. :D
Mikado 04-23-2006, 08:00 PM I agree they ARE just shows , and no one should get upset if someone disses someone elses fave show, but, they do sometimes.....So, you have to be careful , oh well
gilligan fanatic 04-23-2006, 08:17 PM You mean Gilligan's Island isn't real? I have been searching for the island trying to rescue the castaway's and you are telling me it isn't real?

when it comes to you Dr. Thong, I don't take it seriously, because when you do post that "it's just a show, etc" i take it all in jest...which is what you are doing. But when newbies or anyone else TAKES IT SERIOUSLY and throws it in the middle of a discussion that many are having, it kind of puts water on the coals...sometimes it is like putting gas on a fire! Wow!!! anyhow, you are correct when you say certain things that those posters are trying to say should be saved for the political boards. Don't tell me abt how your personal beliefs are when we are discussing something that isn't obviously going to the change the world.
AS FOR J-HO...THE b***** CAN'T ACT, SING, TALK, STAY MARRIED, KEEP HER PANTIES ON LONG ENOUGH FOR ANY MAN, STAY HOME, NOT MAKE MORE MONEY...ANYTHING...ETC ETC ETC...Don't get me started on how much i hate her and what a sap she is...did i make my point?????
Mikado 04-23-2006, 09:31 PM I was only kidding hence the wink. :)
I know...I was just pretending to be a "true believer" also ;)

oh ok, I got it now
Raisingdad2004 04-24-2006, 03:38 AM Isn't a Message Board for TV Shows obviously get passionate messages, nobody thinks that the show is the a cure for cancer...but its a Message Board, when they talk with passion you are only seeing 1 side of them.
'Its just a TV Forum' - what do you really expect?

I did watch An Unfinished Life yesterday, but only because two real actors were in it, Morgan Freeman and Robert Redford. Hell, even the kid who played J.Lo's daughter could really act. J.Lo was...herself.
Now you'll hate me for watching a J.Lo movie, Irene!! I know how you are!!:D

It;s ok for you to feel that way but don;t mess up the flow of a thread that has a good discusssion going on with a stupid response like-"It's Just a TV show" Don;t you think everyone knows that already? Futhermore if you feel it's just a show why did you even become a member at SitcomsOnline?
Chocoholic 04-24-2006, 04:58 PM What bothers me is when someone gets their panties all in a wad because someone doesn't like their most favorite TV show. That's when I say IT'S JUST A FREAKIN' TV SHOW!!! The world is not going to end because not everyone in the world worships Friends. (I've taken quite a bit of flack, on-line and off, for not liking that show. To me, it's just vulgar, asinine, unfunny junk.) There are a few shows that I really enjoy watching, but if someone says they don't like any of them, then that's no skin off my nose. Then, there are the people who feel the need to attack anyone who happens to like a show they can't stand. I've had people on-line attack me because I actually think Wings and Becker are good shows. There is no need to attack the fans of shows, even if you may not like the show.
Anyhoo, I'm off the soapbox now. Oh yeah, one more thing: Jennifer Lopez really is overrated! As is Jennifer Aniston.

I can't stand Friends either and I've been criticized for that on here too. I only voice that opinion on the General Sit-Com Board or other boards when questions about overrated sitcoms are asked. I've never gone to the Friends Board just to bash the show.
Chocoholic 04-24-2006, 05:07 PM Now I'm going to attack you now, You like WINGS???????-LOL-LOL
And you DON'T like Wings?  Ohmigod! Ohmigod! U R, lyke, the most stupedist person EVA!!! I bet U hurt little animals 2!!! U R NOT KEWL!!! :p
 :D Just teasin' of course. It's just a show ;) (Oops, I said it again. Am I gonna be in trouble?)

Same here. I think going to a fan board just to bash the show is a little rude, immature, and just asking for trouble.

YOU, YOU, YOU...you watched a movie with J-HO!!!!??????   What a skank she is.
EvilNpunk you hit it on the head. I feel like people are treating us like D'OH!! IDIOTS. We know it's a t.v. show, don't come here and tell me like i don't know better!!!!
BTW: I HATE FRIENDS TOO!
Sure, in the grand scheme of things they are just TV shows.
But the reason this site is here is for people to come together and discuss as many aspects of those TV shows as we care to.
Sure, disecting a certain show ad nauseum may be a bit much, but this is after all a place we can do it, and i don't think it's right to make people feel self conscious because they like to do that.

Dr. Thong 04-24-2006, 07:14 PM YOU, YOU, YOU...you watched a movie with J-HO!!!!??????   What a skank she is.
Well, I don't know if she's really a skank. Never actually met her, but...:D
Hey, it's like I said, I watched it for the real actors, Redford and Freeman. The movie itself was pretty good. When you have enough good actors, you can kind of overlook J.Blo. Not that I mind looking at her, actually, but..
Hey, Irene!! Put down that rolling pin!!!!:D
I've learned from experience not to watch a fluffy movie that's just a J.Blo vehicle, like that maid movie she was in. Unfortunately, I learned that lesson by, ahem, watching it.:(
I'm glad my message about "It's just a show" came across the right way. I was a little concerned some would take it the wrong way, but you guys have gotten what I meant. But I did want to say it nevertheless.
On the other hand, I'm a little worried about Irene ever forgiving me for watching a J.Blo movie....

Well, i guess you can put me in the category of not getting what you meant, because I don't think it's right.

you know how much i hate that skank???? whenever her face or name is mentioned on TV, that channel is changed soooooooooooo fast...NO SKANKS ALLOWED... :D Seriously, no joke.
I know that you being the messenger on this IT'S JUST A TV SHOW thread it would come across good. You put it very eloquently. NOW, had you said, "You morons take things so damn serious, get over it, damn, it's just a show, what is the freaking deal????"...

I'm as much as geek as anyone else here. TV geek, that is. Movie geek, music geek. Believe me, I can analyze, dissect and go on about stuff with the best of 'em. And if you want to engage me, tell me about what a great contribution Ted McGinley made to Happy Days in that show's later years. Go ahead, I dare ya!!!:D
The one place I pretty much stay out of is the political forums because you can't have fun there. I've tried, but I come here to have a laugh, not to be aggravated.
As for J.Blo, why you so hard on the girl, Irene??? I mean, I don't think she can act or sing to save her life, but she's probably a nice person. I mean, I don't know her personally but I don't hate her or anything. She does have a great ass, however. Oh well, we're all entitled to our opinions, right??
Besides, I'd save my venom for Paris Hilton - when I look at a picture of her and that vague smile, I see nothing inside. No brain, no nothing. At least J.Blo worked to get where she is, the issue of talent aside.:o
