Bravo, great, good for you...but you know what, this board is abt talking abt shows til there is nothing left to talk abt. If you are a newbie, of course you will post stuff that has already been talked abt. That's cool. No problema. However, when you come on here and tell us how to be politically correct, then you have no business being a part of this board. Thanx.

and the stupid thing is this was posted on a thread that a poster was asking whether it was possible for a biracial couple to have one child be "white" in appearance...and another child be "black" in appearance. I at first thought it was ridiculous (as did this poster) but after doing some research I found some proof (pics) along with a story. It was a legit question and something I too had wondered. Forums like this, you tend to learn something new everyday. But obviously someone took it TOO PERSONAL and didn't get the idea behind the thread. That pisses me off.

I was reading that thread. I didn't know it was possible either. You learn something new everyday. That is one thing thats great about SO. These posts remind me of the Its Not In The Script Posts. If it wasn't for these discussions of episodes then SO sure would be boring. I know I wouldn't want to come here as much as I do.

Actually, I was in agreement with you Brian. I too thought that was ludicrous abt the biracial children having such a vast difference in appearance. I decided to research and found one source. I don't know how many others there are, but that one source was remarkable. I was and still am amazed at that fact. Me and Brian and a few others were blown away by that fact.

Or the It's-Just-A-TV-Show resposes...
I read that thread you guys are talking about, and it does happen. I know a biracial couple who's kids have a variety of skin tones. It does happen like in The Jeffersons or The Cosby Show. Skin tones in those shows aren't unrealistic.

I know they kids can have some sort of lighter tones in color, etc. But the vast difference that was portrayed on the Jeffersons, I had never seen. But then again, I was never looking:) ...when the thread was posted I too thought what Brian thought. Obviously, the casting directors had done some research. Or they just knew that it can happen. What do i know? LOL:lol:
Mysty Eyes 04-21-2006, 09:54 PM Okay, I don’t want to be a fly in the ointment, but let me play devil’s advocate here.
Frankly, I read that post as saying this:
"I like the show. It is funny. It is so funny that I don’t really notice the color of the skin of any particular character. The skin color is not what makes the show funny; it is the writing and performing that makes it so."
True, the interracial aspect of this couple was the cause for much of the humor and some of the deeper storylines involving character growth on the show, but it was not the sole cause of the show’s success. Far from it. Plainly put, it was a wonderfully written and presented program.
I didn’t see anything particularly picky or judgmental in that poster’s reply.

Did u read the thread title and the post by Brian which this post was made in reference to?
Mysty Eyes 04-21-2006, 10:55 PM Yes, I did read it. Granted, that is the only post that I have read by this poster, but it doesn't seem all that bad to me. Maybe he/she has a history of being combative; that I don't know. But I don't really see it in this one post.
At worst, I see a reply that is perhaps a non sequitur. It doesn't really address the original post. But I don't see it as being offensive in any way.

They ASSUMED that we were making light of an issue out of black/white children, bi-racial children, when in fact a poster was simply stating an opinion on a matter presented on a sitcom whose main stars were black. Whose neighbors were a married bi-racial couple. Maybe, reading all the posts on that thread you can see what it is we were stating. How I found a source to confirm something presented on a sitcom and it put the thread to REST. However, when a poster, particularly a newbie who obviously doesn't understand how we can analyze a show, ask what may SEEM TO BE ludicrous questions, state an opinion, state a fact, etc. and then post something to make it seem like we were discussing blacks and whites in general. There was no race issue being discussed. The newbie implied with their post that we were being "bias" in some way when that was far from the truth. Had they read the ENTIRE THREAD, posts and all, they would see what it is we were discussing. Especially since the thread was filled with posts from people who are of different races. That's what irritated me. And obviously, others feel the same way. I detest being told by any one, especially a newbie, who doesn't even know us, talking to us like we are being biased. Get over the "i don't see black or white, everyone is the same to me"...you know what newbie, I feel the same way, but don't judge me or anyone else based on a few posts. Maybe they should read my signature below: DON'T JUDGE ME BASED ON YOUR IGNORANCE.
Mysty Eyes 04-21-2006, 11:45 PM We'll have to agree to disagree about this one.
You see, I interpret your reaction to that poster as an assumption about what he is saying, while you interpreted his reply as an assumption about what others in the thread were saying. Either way, the key word is "assumption."
Original post: No mention of the race of the poster.
2nd through 8th posts: No mention of the posters' race.
9th post: The newbie's post.
You imply that the newbie should have known the racial status of the posters in the thread. How could he have known? The only mention of personal status happened after the newbie's post. This one mention happened two posts later.
You could have simply asked him what his opinion was of the casting of the roles of the son and daughter. Simply asked him to address the topic.
I see a new poster who was merely trying to join in, get his feet wet. If it was me, I would probably leave the forum and never come back.
Just my opinion.

Well, it's not you. Only the poster can speak for him/herself. Going by the simple fact the thread was abt the probability of a biracial couple having one very dark child and one white child.
this is what that poster replied with AFTER WE HAD DISCUSSED AND AFTER I FOUND A SOURCE THAT PROVED US WRONG:
Hi, my Feeling is this. It does not matter what color you are or what race you are. the fact is The Jeffersons is the most funniest halarious TV Show in history. Black people are people to, just as white people are people to also just like myself. I don't care about if a interracial married couple who has a baby that turn out to be either black or white. that is completely irrelevent to the show. The Jeffersons is funny and cool. I watch it, and I enjoy it. and that's all that matters to me.
Now, Brian never stated anything remotely abt race per se. He stated WASN'T IT LUDICROUS for this particular couple to have one black and one white child. He was referring to the medical probability of this even happening. I (again) found a source that refuted our belief that it was impossible. This is the type of discussion that occurs in the sitcoms boards. It can even occur in the chit/chat board. If a poster seriously has doubts abt something or a question abt something, then what is wrong with discussing it and trying to find out the answer?
The poster is quoted as saying "I don't care about if a interracial married couple who has a baby that turn out to be either black or white. That is completely irrelevent to the show.
We were NOT DISCUSSING THE SHOW. We were discussing the medical probabilities ( i am repeating myself here ). Just like when we discussed an episode on Good Times when an elderly woman was forced to eat dog food because of her social security income being reduced. We discussed that issue as a reality. This issue on the Jeffersons was being discussed AS A REALITY. I can say without a doubt that the posters who participated in this thread don't care either abt whether a biracial couple has a black child, a white child, a mixed child, a polka-dotted child...we were discussing one thing and one thing only.
We don't need to be talked to as if we were making an issue out of race. Had the title been, what do you think abt the married interracial couple on the Jeffersons and them having one black child and one white child? That would be a race discussion. But that's not what was being discussed.
Skywalker 04-22-2006, 01:12 AM Couldn't all of this have been dealt with in a different manner? I mean just because one new poster offended you doesn't give you the right to start a thread for "Newbies". (IMO)
Mr. Television 04-22-2006, 01:52 AM It isn't just one lone poster. This has been going on in a lot of threads lately. A Discussion will get going and then somebody will come in and post a sarcastic comment It's not in the script. It's only a tv show. You take things to seriously. This is the most ridiculous thread in the history of SO. This is only the latest thread that this has happened in lately. If you don't like the threads then ignore them. Discussions are what makes SO interesting.

as for you Otter...it seems by the posts that this thread generated, most, if not all, people agree with me. And BTW I did respond to the poster on THAT FORUM. I decided to also post it here so all of you can see it, mainly those who feel that they need to be sarcastic and dumb with their constant IT'S ONLY A TV SHOW, IT'S NOT IN THE SCRIPT, IT WAS IN THE SCRIPT, YOU PEOPLE TAKE THIS STUFF TOO SERIOUSLY...it goes on and on and on. It gets stupid. And BTW I did "speak" with a moderator abt THIS THREAD and I was told there was nothing wrong with it and I was given the ok to proceed. Janice 04-23-2006, 04:36 PM I honestly think this thread has run its course. I initially thought this thread might be harmless. Yet, thinking about it, it might not be a good idea to go on about newbies.
I think everyone has said what they wanted to say, and it's turning sort of ugly. Irene, I realize that wasn't your intention.
Mysty Eyes, please don't even think about leaving these boards. You've offered wonderful insight and wisdom over the years. Please reconsider.
