View Full Version : Does anybody else hate family parties?
Brian Damage 04-15-2006, 11:16 AM Call me a homebody or whatever, but I hate going to family parties. I don't know what it is, but I just don't like them at all. For me, there is nothing worse than going to a party for a cousin or other relative you hardly speak to. In the next few weekends, I have about 3 or 4 communions to attend. I am dreading them. First off, I hardly ever deal with these family members on a regular basis. Secondly, I feel these communion parties are more for the parents than for the kids. I mean, they never go to Church throughout the whole year and only go so that they can have a Communion party. That drives me nuts. Lastly, one of these parties is all the way down in Pennslyvania. So basically, my whole weekend is going to be spent down there. I work hard during the week and hate to waste a whole weekend for a stupid party.
GARFIELDKOOL 04-15-2006, 11:28 AM I'm not too fond of them either. My relatives on my father's side always get these gatherings on certain holidays, and they make it seem like it's mandatory that you attend. Like yourself, I only see them a few times out of the year, and when I do, it's accidentally.
Dutabi84 04-15-2006, 12:09 PM I don't like them. I used to LOVE them when I was little, but now they just suck. I'm annoyed greatly by a lot of my relatives.
There is an Easter potluck tomorrow with a bunch of relatives. I'm not going.
James"Thunder"Early 04-15-2006, 12:14 PM Sometimes, mostly my aunt on my dad's side will have a Christmas party. Doesn't really bother me though, because I know most of them well enough were it doesn't seem ackward. Now there was a family reunion my dad made me go to, with family he barely speaks to and that I had never met. That was uncomfortable.
HuntingtonM15 04-15-2006, 12:21 PM I agree. I hate trying to make small talk with someone I see once or twice a year.
Mijada 04-15-2006, 12:39 PM I don't mind them as long as I don't have to drive. I've come to hate driving even if it's just a short distance. I like to see cousins and other relatives
Courtnee 04-15-2006, 01:10 PM ah hope they dyyyyye
swedeace 04-15-2006, 01:22 PM I can take or leave family parties. It depends which relatives. Most of my maternal aunts' (two of them I consider estrange because of how they have acted liked jerks towards my mom) parties love to get beer and just drink a lot as it gets later in the night. I only like to visit at the beginning of the party, and that's it.
My mom's brother's wife's family I like to attend their parties. They are nice, don't gossip, they're friendly, and they aren't big drinkers like my maternal aunts' families.
So it always depends on which relatives....
Brieannas21 04-15-2006, 01:45 PM I don't mind them I think it's because I'm really close to my family on both sides. What I dread is going to my husbands family get togethers, Even though I know a lot of them, I still dread going.
Brian 04-15-2006, 01:52 PM I love going to them but it won't be the same. Over the course of a little over half a year two of my great-aunts died and my grandfather was killed in a car crash in October. One of them died in August and I always looked forward to seeing her whenever my parents took me up to see my father's parents. My other one died in February and I didn't see her a lot until my grandmother's 90th birthday a year ago. She was cool.
It's been really hard on my grandmother but she's making it. Her two remaining sisters (she had a third that died in the 1990s) and her husband of 62 or some years died in a span of a little over a year.
I did get to see my father's cousins and my second cousins - some of whom I had never met before - during the funerals but I feel that it was not a good way to get together.
PZelda 04-15-2006, 02:12 PM With my mom's side, it's a little difficult now...We've had a lot more problems over the last two years or so. I guess it started when one of my younger cousins committed suicide some 1 1/2 years ago. Some of the relatives aren't on good terms at the moment, plus more than half of us grandchildren [me being one of them] are in our 20s now and a lot of us have moved away or whatever. It's hard to get together...We used to be able to get together more often when we were kids.
With my dad's side, I actually don't mind at all. I ADORE my dad's side. Everybody is so goofy and they just rock really hard. Unfortunately, we're scattered over the US so it's even harder to get together. The last time -EVERYBODY- on my dad's side got together was for a family reunion in the summer of 2001. Time before that was in August of 1991.
So I guess what I'm saying is, I'm not too wild about going to parties on my mom's side, but I love the ones on my dad's side.
Ireneparalegal 04-15-2006, 02:23 PM I agree. I hate trying to make small talk with someone I see once or twice a year.
same here. the only family parties i love are the ones my sister has...then relatives have to come HERE.
If I was invited to communion parties Brian, I would send a gift card or something rather than go. I am bothered too by people who don't attend church, don't think of God or Jesus, or whoever they are supposed to worship...but only think of his "home" (church) when their kids are supposed to get baptized, etc. Being they are far away too, would give me reason enough not to go. I would just send something.
I don't talk with most of my family. I get invited to a lot of parties that are for close friends. They are more like family to us.
Karen* 04-15-2006, 02:50 PM Sometimes I like them, but most of the time, I just don't. =/
Brian Damage 04-15-2006, 04:01 PM Driving hundreds of miles to a party is not my idea of a good time. Irene, you are right, these people in Pennslyvania should understand that it is too far away for some people. I think I am going to take your advice and just send something.
I would also like to add, I do not mind going over my parents house, brother's house or my in laws place. I don't mind small gatherings with members of my immediate family. It is when we get to the extended family that bothers me.

That's how I feel. Tomorrow is barbecuing time at my sister's house. That's the kind of family gatherings I love. Just laid back, laughing our asses off, etc. The distant relatives, depends which side of the family. If it's my dad's side, great...if it's my mother's side...very iffy. Usually it's a funeral that makes my ass go, but other than that...nah!
dawsongirl 04-16-2006, 02:50 AM Nope. Basically because people I hate always have to be there. Fortunately lately, they've all been at my house, so at least I didn't have to go anywhere and the food is edible.
When my cousin was younger, I used to hate going to get togethers because she always bugged me to play with her. We're 9 years apart and playing with a little kid was never any fun.
My mom's side all live out of state, so those are non-existant.
robyrob 04-16-2006, 11:07 AM DEFINATELY.
oops - i misread the thread title, i thought it said Family Panties. Well, it doesnt matter now anyways, i'm too disturbed to come up with an answer now. :(
Polniaczek033 04-16-2006, 11:21 AM i normally don't like them.
on my mom's side... the youngest relative is 26. so it's really awkward for me. and i pretty mcuh just talk to my grandma.
on my dad's side.. they're more fun. but they don't occur as often, so it's weird sometimes talking to my cousins because they're like "yeah, i haven't seen you in like a year." and i'm like "yeah." and that's about it.
today.. we're having a family gathering with my moms side. but i guess i get to hangout with my grandma. at least my boyfriend is coming too.
AllIWantIsYourClutch 04-16-2006, 12:44 PM I like my relatives, I just hate the process leading up to a family party. My grandma goes insane and tries to control everything that is going on and everyone just gets mad at each other. And by everyone, I mean me and my mom and my grandma. Like today, I decorated my cake and drew a bunny on it with frosting and my grandma looked at it and said, "Good thing I bought a pie."
It's frustrating. But my family that I don't see very often is fun to be around, most of the time.
EmoJoe 04-16-2006, 01:00 PM family parties rock. :D
Courtnee 04-16-2006, 01:03 PM family parties rock. :D
:racist:
Gizmo1 04-16-2006, 01:08 PM Ive never been exaclty fond of them, but I go cuz they kill boredom. Sometimes with my family it seems like a competition, like "my kids are doing this and they are soo good". "Well my kids are doing this so ha!" Its stupid. That crap doesnt even matter...its like we are all played agaisnt each other. The other 1\2 of my family lives 5hrs away and I dont see them anymore since my grandmother died 2yrs ago. So I basically figured out that those aunts and uncles only sent cards and **** to humor my grandmother. I go to them, just cuz it's the respectable thing to do I guess. Yea, my mom's family treat her like **** and I dont really want to have anything to do with them when I can help it.
EmoJoe 04-16-2006, 01:10 PM :racist:
well, for me at least
EmoJoe 04-16-2006, 01:11 PM well for me, most of the time, the people i spend holidays with i see like every week, so its not awkward or anything.
Moonlight Lady 04-16-2006, 03:35 PM Yes, especially parties thrown by my sister.
Brent88 04-16-2006, 04:38 PM I just got back from an Easter Dinner about an hour ago.
I hate them. I left early and came back home.  They are boring and lame. They all act like I'm still a kid.
