I don't know if this topic was ever brought up before. I just wanted to know has anyone ever tried online dating on one of those sites before? Just wanted to get people's opinions and experiences if any about it. I am so embarrassed I accidently put this on the Good Times board. :o

Yep. I met my boyfriend on OKCupid, and we've been dating now for 4 months. I see him everyday after he's done with work.

Unless I stay with my current boyfriend forever, I'm gonna find my husband online when I'm about 17 and get married at 18. I want to start a family young.

I met my boyfriend through a dating service; we've been together for 11 yrs.
now and still very much in love. It worked for us but that doesn't mean that it will work for everybody. It depends but I think it's worth the try.

I used dating services just to meet someone and have fun because it's too many photos of other guys for me to take a female seriously.

I've put up a profile one time but nothing really happened with it. I set up a date with one guy on there but then he ended up not showing. Oh well, he was 10 years older than me and lived kinda far away so it probably wouldn't have worked out anyway.

Iv'e tried it, and had some pretty good results. Met some really cool people. Iv'e pretty much given up on it though, because I realized I'm not ready to be in a relationship right now. Last thing I need at this point in my life is more drama.

Yeah I was wondering about that because people see a variety of photos and it can be like being a kid in a candy store. Oh I like this one and I like that one too and so on and so on. Then say if you date the people who respond to you it is sort of like going through resumes to see who you are going to pick. So you never know if you are just one of the many guys she is seeing.

I'm against Online Dating because you just never know who exactly it is that you are talking to. The other person may not be truthful in anything they say. The they could be lying about their interests, their age or just about anything else.

Well, a couple of years ago one of my closest friends bit the bullet and signed up for Yahoo personals.
He met a wonderful woman, they got married last September and they are expecting a baby at the end of this year.

If he could do it, anyone can!

I can see both sides of online dating - good and bad.

* Bad Side:
-People lie who they are or the photos are not appealing

* Good Side:
-It can come in handy if it is difficult to socialize and "meet" someone face-to-face or for those who find it difficult to "go up" to people.

So yeah... it can be half-and-half, I guess....

I met my husband through one and my brother met his wife through one so for us it was successful and I would recommend it to anyone who is having trouble finding a mate in the traditional way. I think those sites can be very helpful for people who are shy such as myself or for people who just don't have the time to get out and meet others. For me it was very hard to meet people in the traditional manner. I wasn't into going to bars or parties and the guys I worked with were either taken or just not what I wanted. Online dating introduced me to a whole bunch of different people whom I would have never met otherwise. As far as people lying about themselves on those sites, I'm sure there are a lot who do so you just have to be very careful. Most of the guys I dated the traditional way turned out to be jerks and lyers too.

FYI, Perverted-Justice.com helps to catch people who want to have some sort of sexual contact with CHILDREN, aka pedophiles. That's a different story. One would think if both parties are over 18, they would exercise more common sense. If you are under the age of 18, you shouldn't even be going to online dating sites.

As for online dating... Whatever floats peoples' boats. Hell, they have JDate.com, a website exclusively for Jewish singles.

The chances of a 55 year old guy saying he's 18 years old on a dating site are very unlikely. Even if someone does happen to meet with someone who's lying about their age, you'd just turn around and leave. This is assuming the guy's profile doesn't have pictures on it.

[QUOTE=TJL]Well, a couple of years ago one of my closest friends bit the bullet and signed up for Yahoo personals.

I was thinking about signing up for Yahoo personals.
I have a bunch of questions and did not know where to go.
You can view the people for free now.To actually talk or e-mail them
you have to pay. I know that for sure. Well I wanted to know if you
could pay by check or money oder? What happens next? If you do
meet someone and it works out how can you be sure Yahoo doesn't just
keep on billing you after you quit using it? Once you pay does it matter if you talk to one person or fifty people? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Or if any of you know who to talk to that would be appreciated to.

I don't think there's anything wrong with online dating, providing the two people come to trust each other and stuff. I think it would be wise to graduate from just talking on the internet to talking on the phone, perhaps--then gradually, if it works out, meet that person.

Hell, you might meet your soulmate online :) I met someone online that I really, really liked for a long time (still do, in fact). We talked for about a year before we met in person.

I don't know anything about Yahoo Personals but the site I was with was called Relationships.com. Yahoo may operate in a similar manner though.
I was able to set up a profile and view other profiles (as many as I wanted and as long as I wanted) for free. In order to initiate conversation or respond to mail from other people who were full members, I had to become a full member as well. You could pay for one month at a time which is what I did. You also had the option of paying 3 months, six months or a full year at a time which would be cheaper in the long run. Anyways, I paid by the month with a check. They will keep billing you automatically until you tell them to stop. All I had to do was click next to where it says "Stop Automatic Billing" I did that after Tom and I met and things started going well for us and I was never billed again. I was however still able to view other profiles and keep my own profile up.

You're right. Some of them give you different categories to choose from of exactly what you're looking for. I hate the ones where people can go to just for sex. With Aids, and all that kind of stuff, God only knows what bad results those kinds of sites can cause.

I don't want anybody to be offended with what I say, because it is just my opinion, but I think online personals look like desperation. You put want ads out for jobs and when you want to sell something, not to hustle yourself. To me, it just screams loneliness and desperation.

We all want love I am sure, but what happened to letting it happen naturally? People are basically auctioning themselves off to the highest bidder. Nobody is getting paid, but it seems like a harem. You date this one, throw her aside and date another one. I just don't like when people "look" for love. Something about that bothers me.

My take on dating and finding people: You find them where you find them. If it's at work, fine. A bar, fine. School, fine. Online dating site, fine. If you happen to be shy, or just don't seem to have any luck finding people in the "traditional" places, I don't see online as desperate. I'd be more likely to say that people who go to bars for the sole purpose of finding a man/woman, and not to just socialize, as more desperate, especially the ones who wear more makeup/perfume/cologne than normal, drag out their "hot" clothes, and try to act all that.

But to each his own.

Yes I agree. It's too bad that so many people here have had negative experiences with it or are unwilling to even give it a try. Love doesn't always just come naturally for a lot of people. If you want something, you have to go out and get it. It isn't always going to come to you. I would have never even met my husband in the traditional way mainly because we were both homebodies and not into the bar/party scene. We were both finished with school and busy working full time. The internet happened to be the last option for us and it turned out to be the best thing for us. I wouldn't go so far as to say that either one of us were desparate. I think anxious is a better word. Anxious to get married and start a family since we were already in our 30's and the traditional way was not working for either of us.

if someone has alot of common sense, there are ways to tell online if you're talking to someone who is truthful or lying. especially if you've talked to the person for a while, true personality comes through even if someone lies about their age.

Yeah....if your soul mate happens to be online, then that's where they are. I see the internet as a sort of virtual school/workplace/bar/church/any other place people meet. It just happens that were're all at home (or at work) and not face to face. Those same creeps you may meet online can also be met in public, where they're almost harder to avoid since they are in person.

I never would have met my boyfriend in the traditional way because we don't even live in the same state. And I consider myself lucky, because he's a great guy, unlike a lot of the guys I have met in the traditional way. And if it takes getting online to met that great guy/girl, then so be it. If it doesn't, then lucky you.

You're 14. That's still underage. At this point in your life, you shouldn't be worrying about this kind of thing. Just enjoy being a kid. You'll have plenty of time later on in life, trust me.

Personally, I'm glad I waited until I turned 20 before getting serious about finding someone to be with. I am almost done with college at this point, starting to think about what I want to do with my life, things like that. You have a different, more mature mindset at 20 than at 14.

Again, this is just my opinion. I don't mean to personally attack any of you who have done online dating. I just don't agree with it. I think a big problem is that people in this society push people to be in a relationship. If you don't have a man by the age of 30, something must be wrong with you. It's bull****! All you see are these e harmony commercials of happy couples and forget about Valentine's day. Sheesh!

If you've never experienced internet dating then you really don't know much about it. You were fortunate to have found the right person the traditional way and that is great but many of us are not so lucky so we try different ways to find people. And if it works out in the end like it did for me (and hopefully for Cathy) than there is nothing wrong with it. I personally didn't feel pressured into starting a relationship, in fact a lot of people told me that I was better off to be by myself because I had freedom, you can't trust men or whatever and for most of the years that I was alone I had no problem with it. Eventually though I did want marriage and children and women can only wait around for so long to start a family before their biological clock starts ticking. I spent over 10 years dating the traditional way and met a lot of guys but none of them were right for me. If you try something for 10 years and it's not working, common sense tells me to try something else which is what I did and within 6 months I knew I had finally found the right man. Had I not done the internet dating thing I would probably still be sitting at home alone waiting for Mr. Right to come along or else I would have ended up settling for someone whom I was not fully compatible with like many people end up doing which explains why the divorce rate is so high. I know you're not attacking me personally and you are entitled to your own opinion, I just think you're being very narrow minded on the issue.

A friend of mine tried online dating on match.com or one of those sites. But, get this....he didn't use his real picture! Then he couldn't understand why women were getting peeved when he told them it wasn't really a picture of him!

But seriously, I don't think there is anything wrong with online dating. I've never tried it myself, but I have met some cool people online through chatrooms, and newsgroups. I would expect similar results with online dating. The dating scene is so competitive these days, and as a guy, cold approaches are often not easy to do, so I could see how online dating would give one a leg-up. The friend I mentioned earlier is very much on the shy side, and way too timid to approach and ask out women himself. I keep telling him he needs to grow a pair, and do it, but I doubt he will. So, he does the online thing. I can't fault him for that. At least he's trying.

That's really cool, I'm happy you were able to find a nice guy online!! :) I totally agree with you about how some people just aren't into the bars, and stuff like that. My boyfriend and I are exactly the same in that sense too. No way would I have met him anywhere else. We don't like the bar/club scene. Also, my boyfriend is extremly shy around others. It takes him a little bit of time to warm up to others. I'm in college, but I can't stand the guys that are my age. All they want are things that I'm not going to give them. I don't drink, party, do drugs, or have sex with random people. That's all that College guys seem to want. My boyfriend, who's in his late twenties, respects me. He doesn't do any of those things either.

He doesn't do any of those things either.
 btw, I saw the pic of you and your guy on myspace...you make a cute couple. :)

I bumped this thread because I sorta want to ask if anyone's been in a similar situation.

I was bored on Friday and was surfing around for local guys in my city who are into dating on MySpace. I was just browsing through. I am looking into dating, but something interesting happened - I came across one of my friend's brother's MySpace who is also interested in dating. I like some things in his profile where I would like to get to know him some more. Be it friends or more or whatever. I just found some things on his site interesting. I mean, I know some stuff about him through my friend, but he doesn't know me, per sé. He is not a complete stranger.

The thing is that he is my friend's brother. I really don't want my friend to find out about this. I know his brothers' names and one or two facts about them but that's it. My friend doesn't know I found his brother's MySpace. In fact, I don't even think he knows his brother has a MySpace.

Sooooo.... what do I do? Should I just send his brother messages to communicate with him and see what happens from there? Then if something more happens, then how would I react once I see my friend? I think it would sound too tacky to say, "Oh, what a coincidence! So-and-so was your brother? Hey, friend!" Would that sound too weird?

Would it feel "too weird"? I am more concerned about things developing more or even being friends and hanging out and then "running into" my friend at their family gatherings. I don't know what to say then....

What would you do in this situation? I want to try, but I am apprehensive. I also don't want to miss out on any possible opportunities. So....what would you do? Why? Why not? Decisions, decisions.... :(

Sheesh!
Agreed. Plus I saw a show on Dr. Phil where a lot of these people are actually married and are just looking for a sexual hookup. There's another website called, "Ashley Madison" and it's nothing but married or "committed" people screwing around on each other. Nice - encourage adultery. As bad as picking up hookers online. Scumbags.

Well if you don't want your friend to know then I wouldn't do it. If you start communicating with this guy and you become friendly things may get more serious and then your friend is bound to find out and someone will just end up getting hurt. Based on my own experiences I think it's best not to even get seriously involved with close friends of friends or siblings of friends.

I'm not really familiar with MySpace and I'm curious about something. Some people here on SO have mentioned that they got in touch with old school friends through that site and I'm wondering exactly how they did it. I've only visited there a few times and most people don't give their full names or where they live so if I was to try and look up an old friend how would I find them when there are millions of profiles on there.

I was bored one day and signed up for a dating site called (Plentyoffish.com)...I had a terrrible experience; majority of the men (seemed only interested in sex) even after I clearly stated in my profile that I was only looking to meet (new) friends; and another thing a lot of the guys seemed jaded and bitter (a combination that I do not find appealing); also, another thing that turned me off, the (right away) a man would immediately ask for my telephone number or where I lived (a little too "freaky" and desperate) for my tastes...and besides that I am not really looking to be in a relationship at this time (unless this man totally AWESOME, and someone whom I am terribly fond of) mean while I am happy being single and trying to find what I really want (if I decide to enter a new partnership):)

So what if a guy gave you his number to call him? I think if two people are attacted to each other photos, they should see if they have chemistry over the phone. Why was time chatting through email? I think chatting through email is for LOSERS!

I found a friend that I had known since I was like 5, but lost contact with when I was 9 after I had moved out of state. I just typed in her first and last name in the search area and her profile came up. Turns out she's living in a different state herself now. We've started talking again, it's great. I've also found a lot of my cousins on there too.

Well with my boyfriend (met him online), I didn't fall in love with his words. I thought he sounded interesting and that we had a lot in common. I met him after talking with him for 2 months, every day, at least 3 hours a night. I'll admit it, there are liars out there. I got lucky though, that's for sure.

Unfortunately, most of the guys that gave me their numbers (looked pretty bad); and I did not chat with them (via emails) they just randomly gave me their telephone number(s); but I understand on what you are trying to say; if I developed an attraction to someone with whom I saw their picture (and went WOW, he is HOTT) then I was defintely had called them..NOT!!!!;)
I do not "look down" anyone who is interested in finding someone online (that is their prerogative); but it was something I looked into and decided that I would feel more comfortable meeting men in a different direction...and another thing, it is not a wise thing to do..giving out your telephone number (online) because regardless on how that person looks, etc..you never know.

I added my school (my page is in my signature. if you scroll to the bottom, there's a list called my schools or something). The grad year is a link, and if you click on it, it brings up all the other people who list that school and grad year on their page. My friend had a picture of herself, so that's how I knew her. I sent her a message telling her who I was (cuz you really can't tell) and we just started talking again.

I understand what you mean. I just looked at the fact that a man who's in front of my face can just as easily lie to my face as a man that I'm talking to online. That happens all the time too. You can be talking to a guy in person, and he can lie about his marital status. That does happen. My grandpa did that to my grandmother when they met. Online dating is taking a risk, you just have to be smart about it.

I would never try online dating. You never know who you're talking to. There are some weird people out there and I would be too guarded to actually meet anyone anywhere who I had just met online. I prefer the old-fashioned way of meeting people in person without meeting online first. And, I don't see what the big deal is with online dating sites. People should just take their time and not try to rush. People ought to meet someone in person who they click with eventually.

That's where I met most of my girlfriends from online dating. But have giving up on online dating. Because want to get to know each other first which is understandable. I would rather look elseware. Where she is right there and you dont have to type to the person to get to know them. Like one of my ex-girlfriend said that best way to get to know each other is to meet them in person. Right now though theres a girl at work I like and I may ask her out. Just waiting for a good time.

Oh, good luck!! Just try not to rely too much on waiting for "the perfect time." Trust me - you will wind up driving yourself crazy. I just don't believe in the word "perfect." It's crippling and puts a lot of unnecessary pressure. Just let things flow and try to make small talk with her. You will do fine. :)

BTW, that woman in your avatar - who is she? She looks a bit like Jenny Berggren from Ace of Base. I always thought that, but I keep forgetting to mention it...until now. ;)

---

Now... I can see advantages/disadvantages for both sides of finding/meeting potential dates: online vs. real-life.

One advantage to the online browsing/talking is the shy factor. A lot of us are shy, and the in-person thing is just quite difficult. I know that I feel pathetic whenever I see a guy I would like to get to know and can never seem to "maintain" an on-going conversation with them. It makes me feel pathetic. They never come UP to me, and I am usually apprehensive about going up TO them to initiate a conversation. I usually try to make a "perfect" reason or atmospheric setting before going forth and doing so. As I previously mentioned, I don't believe in the word "perfect." That just cripples and plays with our minds and puts too much pressure. We're all humans, so we are always going to make little mistakes. I think the best thing to do is just laugh it off and take it lightly.

Anyway... I still find it difficult to just walk up to guys I eye. Otherwise, I just feel like they will think I am "weird." I know, I know... how will I know if I never try? Well, I have tried going up and making small talk with guys I am interested in, but they NEVER reciprocate. So, it makes me feel like a total loser and that hurts. :( But.... I'd MUCH rather go for risking the in-person interaction. I am open to either method because either can work.... I don't want to overlook possibilities in life that may come down my road.

Not that I have much dating experience, but still.... These are my thoughts....

Either way you slice the pie, dating is still risky. It doesn't matter if you met the person online, know them in real life, met them in a bar, etc. It's risky, period. But if you are smart and know how to take precautions before you proceed into a relationship, it will not be as bad. I've been doing pretty decently in the relationships I've been in, so I must be doing something right. :) I'm currently seeing a guy, and he's a great person. Heh.
