View Full Version : "The Last Page" has to be by FAR... Brian Damage 03-31-2006, 12:20 AM ...the WORST episode of What's Happening. It was completely unwatchable as far as I'm concerned. I disagree, I prefer the Last Page episode over the episode-"No Roger, No Rerun, No Rent" Brieannas21 03-31-2006, 01:49 AM I agree, I've always said that this was the worst episode EVER. I don't know what the writers were smoking the day they wrote that episode. I guess they figured the WH was over so they just wrote anything. Season 3 writing was horrible. Ireneparalegal 03-31-2006, 02:03 AM Since the show was on ABC and the writers were bored as hell, I guess the thought of ratings and showing off the other ABC shows was the only thing they were thinking. When I did see this the first time during its first run, it was fun to watch. But that was waaaay back then. Being older now and really looking at it, it is the worst. Brian Damage 03-31-2006, 09:29 AM It proved to me that Rerun was definitely not the star of WH. This was an episode built around him and it was horrible. CindyRoxiesLair2006 03-31-2006, 08:22 PM I agree with this, to a certain and very fine point... :happyface Where the dream sequence scenarios set in "Happy Days" and "Three's Company" were all right, they could've done away with the one set to "Mork and Mindy" completely... Overall, as Brain Damage said, this particular episode was set mainly around Rerun and that idea alone totally sucked. There was no personality there, hardly...just like Rerun was in real life. (Not kidding here.) And TV Researcher brings up a good point as well, concerning "No Roger, No Rerun, No Rent". That one was totally lacking in all sorts of important humor & enjoyment factors! :) Mr. Television 03-31-2006, 08:24 PM This was the worst episode of WH I ever saw. Brian Damage 03-31-2006, 08:51 PM This was the worst episode of WH I ever saw. :thanks: Adamantium 04-14-2007, 10:42 PM I watched all 65 episodes on DVD this past week (just finishing up today) and I agree. "The Last Page" is the WORST episode of the series. I couldn't stand it at all. None of them did a good job playing the other characters. It's as if they never saw the shows that they were in. Rerun's Fonzie is way too mean. His Mork is like a robot. The "No Roger, No Rerun, No Rent" episode wasn't the best, but I liked it. Well, for a season three episode. The third season is easily the worst. comedyfreak 04-16-2007, 02:49 AM I didn't like the Benefit show. nchorseman 09-30-2007, 11:13 PM I liked this episode. I love when scripts wreak of total drug usage, by the writers. GSU2004 03-20-2008, 09:02 PM The third season was awful. This episode with them fake, cheesey sets was the absolute worst. You could sense that the studio probably had to put up laughter signs in the audience to make them laugh. When the show came to TVLand in 2005, I remember turning it off after the first commercial break. Brian Damage 03-20-2008, 09:52 PM The third season was awful. When the show came to TVLand in 2005, I remember turning it off after the first commercial break. I did the very same thing. I don't think they could even hold up signs to say Laugh because this crap was soooo unfunny. It was probably canned laughter. GSU2004 03-29-2008, 05:40 PM I did the very same thing. I don't think they could even hold up signs to say Laugh because this crap was soooo unfunny. It was probably canned laughter. LOL, that is probably the truth. After this episode aired, I would have cancelled it also if I was ABC. I hate when shows run out of ideas or big egoed actors want to control storylines. Ireneparalegal 03-29-2008, 05:56 PM Seeing that episode in reruns, I can't help but notice how the audience almost seemed to be laughing but not because it was funny, more like out of embarrassment. Jrog 04-01-2008, 04:59 PM I didn't like the Benefit show. This, I agree with. While the last page was bad this episode seemed bad and as if they just weren't trying. Let's forget how they could have gotten sued for saying Sammie Davis Jr. was going to be at an event - even printing and distributing flyers saying as much if I'm not mistaken - you're telling me having met some of the people that they had over the course of three seasons (the Doobie Bros, etc) Rerun's first reaction was to pull the name of Sammie Davis Jr out of thin air. Oh, and Little Earl doing his Steve Martin thing - just the thought of it - still brings my blood to a boil. :) ThomasE 04-26-2008, 12:25 PM This, I agree with. I'm sorry, but it was. The funniest one in this episode was Shirley and the way she was interacting with the audience by giving them attitude. comedyfreak 05-02-2008, 09:47 AM Well excuuuuuuuzze meeeee! The funniest one in this episode was Shirley and the way she was interacting with the audience by giving them attitude. That was the only bright spot in the whole episode. Lee G 03-05-2009, 01:45 PM I'm thinking of buying the complete series DVD, but the packaging is poor and the 3rd season is weak compared to seasons 1 and 2. So I'm leaning towards buying seasons 1 and 2 only and forget season 3. So I'm leaning towards buying seasons 1 and 2 only and forget season 3. Season 3 to me would have been better had Mrs. Thomas been there. She was always at work, still in bed or away visiting which made it easier to film segments at the house. No pun but she helped to keep a balance in the show. I liked the "The last page" episode though. TV_on_the_Porch 04-03-2009, 07:51 AM I'm pretty sure it was a closed set for most if not all of the episodes of the 78-79 season. No audience, just a laugh track. EccentricGenius 02-04-2016, 06:44 PM I think the third (and, sadly, final) season--in its entirety, natch--is the nadir of "What's Happening!!" Eliminating Mabel King (and the character of Mama as a whole) and adding John Welsh and David Hollander (as Big Earl and Little Earl, respectively) to the cast were definitely a deathblow to the series. Despite the cast changes, "What's Happening!!" ranked 29th for the 1978-79 season (primarily due to having the smash hit of the 1978-79 season, "Mork and Mindy," as its lead-in on Thursday nights; it also preceded "Barney Miller" on the same night ["Barney Miller" ranked 15th]). If I had to choose the worst episode of "What's Happening!!" (difficult choice, by the way--there are so many!), I'd select "The Benefit Show," which (unfortunately) also served as the final (de facto) episode of the series. I guess the cast and crew had hoped that ABC would renew the series; alas, it was not to be. Surprisingly enough ABC wanted a 4th season of the show but producers were done with the cast (Haywood, Ernest and Fred) by that time. With the walkouts and demands, the producers decided not to continue. I am sure this probably played a big role in the production of this season given the quality issues of it. |
