The church choir story did originally air on 1/3/90. I have the NBC airing and the church story is there.

However, the original episode also contained the story about Jimmy Aprille's (sp?) search for his missing kids who were abducted by his wife Melveen. She also stole about two million dollars from his bank account.

In addition, there was a "special alert" narrated by then FBI assistant deputy director Floyd Clarke.

On the Lifetime version, these two stories are deleted and replaced with the crop circle segment from January 31.

I like your case descriptions. :)

The 2/21/90 episode is a puzzle. The episode guide describes these two stories as being a part of the original airing:

"the Texas search for two teens charged with killing four persons; a Georgia woman's quest to locate the person who protected her from child abuse"

I'm guessing the teen story described is the one about those two boys who went on a killing spree. Anyone know who the "Georgia woman" is? The only season two story I can think of that might fit the bill is Sharon Stevens looking for the Zelinskis, but I can't recall if she was from Georgia. Anyone remember?

I have no idea when the Dale Hyde and Night Stalker segments may have originally aired. They were repeated that summer, but mixed in with other stories. The Night stalker witness was re-ran on 7/18/90 and Dale Hyde on 8/22/90.

Update: Abducted Baskin children spotted. (Aired: February 21, 1990)

I caught the end of that segment today. Talk about a simple wager on the over. They showed the couple who abducted the children, the Maples, sitting there on some steps with huge grins. Then Robert Stack describes the man, "6 foot 1, 175 pounds." Right. His belly extends at least one step further than where's he's seated. Then the woman,"5 foot 4, 120 pounds." Yeah, if you don't count at least two limbs.

No wonder they were never found.

I would bet the farm. I have the episode that aired exactly one week before and Stack said it (the Conniff story) was coming "next week". I have a feeling 1/10/90 was one of those episodes that was comprised mostly of repeat stories and the Conniff case was the only new one in the bunch. That would also explain why Lifetime bundled it together with the other stories from 4/25/90 after deleting the story about the reverse sting operation in Virginia.

Did you ever find out what the "reverse sting operation in Virginia" one was about?

Negative.

I can't help but wonder if it's a mistaken reference to the Florida story about the ersatz cellphone shop the DEA set up to catch Spanish drug runners in Miami. THAT story originally aired on 5/2/90.

Here is what blows my mind though....

At the end of 8/22/90, Stack says something along the lines of "tune in next week to see how our viewers brought an undercover drug dealing operation to a successful conclusion..."

Look at the episode guide, and you'll see a reference to the Virginia sting in the description for the following week's episode.

BUT

the other stories scheduled to air on 8/29/90 (according to Stack mind you, not the episode guide) were the Boston Shopping Mall rapist, and Plummer's gold - stories from 5/2/90.

So, I don't know. We'll only know if we find a copy of that week's episode from an NBC broadcast.

VIRGINIA FUGITIVE CAUGHT IN KANSAS
Daily Press (Newport News, VA)
June 24, 1990
Author: Associated Press
Estimated printed pages: 1

A man sought since his indictment in Virginia in 1986 as part of a bribery sting operation that netted 18 other people has been arrested here, the FBI announced Friday.

Frank Storey, special agent in charge of the Kansas City, Mo., office of the FBI, said agents arrested Dewey Demetro, 50, at a mobile home park in Kansas City, Kan., Thursday.
His case was featured April 25 on the nationally televised "Unsolved Mysteries" program. He is the last to be apprehended among those indicted by a federal grand jury in Alexandria.

Jane Mason, a Kansas City FBI spokeswoman, said she did not exactly how long Demetro had been in the Kansas City area, where he has relatives.

Jim Mull, an FBI spokesman in Washington, D.C., said the case involved an investigation in which an undercover police officer who was part of the northern Virginia Regional Drug Task Force was approached by a man seeking to buy guns.

Demetro is charged with obstruction of justice, conspiracy to commit bribery and to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, and interstate travel in aid of racketeering, Mull said.

All the stories mentioned (except for Groezinger) did air on 5/2/90. I have it on tape and can confirm. There was also a story deleted from the Lifetime version about an undercover operation to catch Miami drug dealers. The DEA set up a cellphone/pager shop and the druglords bought cellular equipment from them. Basically, the feds monitored their calls and busted their drug shipements one by one. They had to close the operation entirely when one of the drug dealers made a sexual pass at a female agent(!) Naturally, a few of the dealers got away and ended up being profiled on UM. I have never seen this story on Lifetime, and it was apparently cut in favor of the Groezinger story. That being said, Groezinger aired on January 24, 1990.

Although this case isn't considered an old classic one, I was always still very interested in it. But it was very disturbing and it's probably the most obvious case involving police corruption that Unsolved Mysteries has ever profiled. To this day, Ed Carter, that scum police officer STILL has not been charged with any crime. Sadly, I guess it really is possible to get away with murder.

How do they edit Virginia Madsen's host segments? I believe she started co-hosting by the spring of 1999. Do they cut the stories she introduced alltogether? I never really watched UM that much during the time she hosted although I think she's pretty and a good actress I kind of lost interest by this time so I can't tell the difference in these edited shows.

I have all of those CBS episodes uncut, so I have not been paying real close attention, but it looks to me like they had Stack re-narrate the individual segments, and pasted on a generic "join me you may be able to help solve a mystery" opening.

I'm extremely skeptical about the ballistics match of that gun tied to the pizza delivery murder. Just too outer space unlikely, for a single gun with no apparent ties to the area to somehow match. I'm not sure how accurate ballistics matches are, compared to DNA or other criteria, but I'd love to wager if the actual murder weapon could be pinpointed, it wouldn't be that specific gun.

One of the most senseless and tragic murders in UM history, considering the expectation level of cash on a pizza delivery driver.

I could not have put into better workds mayself Ma... that case was really strange.. I beleive that it could have been the same gun.. as in model but i think it moreso a look alike.. the same gun would fire the same bullets so if there were two guns that look alike how could you tell which one fired the shot.. I think ballistics test back then were not as advanced and was mostly likely based on simple microscope observations

Your skepticism couldn't be more justified. Last year, I came across an article about the 20th anniversary of the murder of Morris Davis. The article mentioned that the gun was retested in 1995, and it was determined not to be the murder weapon.

So what UM said about the gun in the 1990 segment was an unfortunate mistake. My guess is that the gun was retested with forensic technology that more advanced than what was available for its initial test in the 1980s. In any case, it never hurts to retest something, especially on the 50/50 chance that you have overlooked something crucial.

Hey, I did good!

Did you post that info here? Sounds like you would have, but if so I completely missed it. Most likely I didn't connect the name to the case.

I am pretty good at evaluating situations based on probability. That segment stood out as monumentally against the odds when I watched it yesterday, for the first time in quite a while. I didn't remember the gun wasn't found locally, but in a car passing through the area years later.

On edit: Kane did post this info here, in April 2005. Looks like not many people connected the name to the case, since there were only two brief replies: http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=137183&highlight=Morris+Davis

And just look at that article. They buried the info about the faulty ballistics test maybe 3/4 of the way thru the article. Unbelievably pathetic. Excellent job by Kane in highlighting that aspect when posting it here.

Yes I was curious if she ever found her as well. UM was really good at finding the lost loves they profiled so there's a decent chance. Thats one of the more memorable Lost Loves cases, the scene of that mother holding her newborn and putting rocks in her apron and walking into the water is very haunting.

Not according to the show it wasn't.

The Wendy Camp case always bugs me. I very much doubt that they were dropped off at Wal Mart and just...dissapeared. Unless it was some amazingly bizzare coincidence and they were kidnapped right after that. I mean, thinking about it, things could have happened. Maybe Wendy couldn't call because the phones were out of order at the Wal Mart (though I think they would have mentioned that) and so the ladies tried to hitchhike back and met foul play then. Dunno.

The body dumping of Su Ya is a sad tale. I don't see how it can be solved, though. From what we know, there is no physical evidence at the scene that would have been collected, and all of the blood is Su Ya's. The car that "star witness" led to turned up nothing. I mean, good grief. They have absolutely nothing.

Then again, aren't there a few vital facts to the case that they purposefully withhold to field callers? This is an instance where I'd like to know what those are...

It'd be amazing to find a former telecenter worker who had a list of those questions and answers for every episode ever.

AMW does that too, and for good reason. If they publicized literally every detail about a fugitive, missing person, etc., then the forthcoming tips would be harder to sort out, instead of easier. If a tip they receive mentions a detail that wasn't publicly known (such as a scar, tattoo, or some other characteristic), then it raises the possibility that the tip is legitimate. Therefore, they come closer to resolving the case.

Agreed. I never thought about the scar/tattoo thing, and it would/does help.

However, at this point, the crime has no air time except for UM, and I think in this instance it would be interesting and perhaps beneficial to know some more information on the crime.

The story aired on UM sometime in the later 80's...maybe 1990/1991. The story was about a man and woman (can't remember if they were a couple but doubt it) after they had dinner at a restaurant (i think Robert Stack said it was Applebees) they were driving in the car and they realized that they were being followed by a man. After being followed for some time the man decided to stop the car and confront the follower. When the guy walks up to the car the lady remained in the car and remembers her male friend asking the guy why he is following them... the man replies some weird comment..possibly about the lady b/c the male friend then says loudly "what? are you crazy?" (or something like that) the man then shoots the male friend and speeds off. The man died and the identity of the killer is what UM is trying to find. If anyone remembers this episode please let me know!!

I agree, this was a bizarre case. I think the main reason I found it so bizarre was not only did the killer let a witness ("Jean") get such a good look at himself and his car, but that he risked so many other people seeing his car - the chase went on for about 10 miles on an expressway that was probably farily busy and other people were likely to have noticed the chase. He also ran the risk of a police officer noticing. It seems like most criminals would just want to do their thing and get out ASAP, without letting witnesses or potential witnesses get too good of a glmpse of themselves/their cars.

Antoher thing that was bizarre: The killer seemed to know Jean's every move. Every attempt she made to throw him off guard on the freeway didn't work, he seemed to know what to do. Weird. Tragic case, it's a shame this happened, especially over a sports team (if that's what his motive was.)

Did anyone see the American Justice that was done on the Shannon Mohr story? It was un-frickin'-believable! To think that Shannon accepted his proposal AFTER he had asked something like three other women to marry him is just sad. That poor girl never knew what was coming.

That's why the audio sounded muddled! I was like, "Stack sounds a bit better, but good grief the audio quality has dropped from even the last case."

These new episodes are sad. Thinking that Stack died, and listening to how his voice changed from the bold one to what sounds weaker and tired...:(

They both died, from what I can remember. I looked on the site a while back about this case, saw the update, and checked the internet. They were both dead, I'd imagine in the car since they would float, right?

EDIT: Found one of TJ's old posts:

http://www.nmco.org/gallery/resolved/kenley-traci.html

"Traci and Bill Rundle were last seen in Clay Center at approximately 10:45pm. They indicated that they were traveling back to Hastings but never arrived. On Wednesday, July 31, 2002, Bill's Jeep was found in a feedlot drainage pond one mile west of Glenvil. Traci and Bill's bodies were located inside the Jeep, both were not wearing seatbelts. Damage to the Jeep's front fender was consistent with a low-speed impact involving water and investigators are ruling their death as an accident."

Yeah, they were probably unfamiliar with the area like they said in UM and, bam. Crash. Sad story.

The link is dead by now, but by using the Wayback machine I was able to locate it, and the summary was complete.

Well, I'm back! Lifetime is now back to old episodes. For now on, expect this thread updated when older episodes air on Lifetime, meaning, episodes that either aired on NBC or CBS.

Friday's episode seems to have originally aired on September 20, 1996 on NBC.

Cases include:

The Investigators: A look at the possible connections between the Zodiac killer who struck during the late 60s and early 70s and the Unabomber and the possibility that Theodore Kaczynski could be both criminals. (Aired: September 20, 1996)

Updates: Mary and Carl Denney have been captured after running a insurance fraud scam. (Aired: ?)

Missing: Two college girls have been missing. April Gregory has vanished near her college campus in New York while Kristin Smart is missing in California. Includes update. (Aired: ?)

Miracles: Trish Zemba suffers a fall from a horse and comes down with a painful nerve disease. After weeks of pain, Trish is suddenly healed for no apparent reason. (Aired: ?)

Wanted: William Jordan and Anthony Prevatte are responsible for the 1974 murder of James Rouse Jr. Jordan is still on the lose and Rouse's family seek his capture. (Aired: ?)

If anyone can verify that all cases aired on September 20th that would be great. I do know that all cases aired supposedly as a repeat on December 27, 1996.

I have looked into it and havent found much. Some fisherman think they found it because their boat kept snagging on something that was about 700 feet below the surface of the pacific ocean and they think this was the boat. However I dont think they have ever actually confirmed that. Are the boys and Red still alive? Well I would maybe consider that he had taken the boys to Columbia where he was living, I think a lot of people would have rather had that be the case then the alternative that they died when the boat sank. However the reason why I think it sank was because of the first mate, his wife said he would have never willingly left his family so unless Red murdered him which I doubt, the boat sank and they died. So sad though. I remember that one boat snagged and got a fishing net caught up on it and this one guy claimed it was a fishing net from the sunken boat because he had sold that net to Red himself.

I looked it up and apparently a business partner of Mickey's was eventually charged with the murder...I don't know much more, but it seems reasonable, I guess. They never looked into that aspect on the show, or many aspects at all.

As well, does anyone know the name of the Krazy Glue Robber? It seems like someone of his sophistication in crime would have acted before, and it's sad that he died (allegedly).

As well, I didn't see the original NBC airing so I don't know if the little part at the end about the robber's death was there, but I would consider that an update.
