View Full Version : Time Spent Online
Nighthawk76 03-23-2006, 06:22 PM The internet is a great place to come online and meet many different and interesting people. However, I think many people who come online become so used to talking to their online "friends" that they more or less make chat rooms their homes. This very thing happened to me late last year.
I spent hours at a time each night in chat rooms and message boards and even thought I thought I was having a good time, I soon realized that I no longer had a life offline. I was no longer going out out to see friends. I was spening all my free time online. I soon became pretty depressed about the whole thing, because spending hours at a time talking to people each and every night online is not having a life. As so as I got off line and got out in the world again, I felt much better about myself and my life.
Is it always fun to come online and talk to people, but don't you think there is a point where a lot of people are spending too much time online and have given up having a real life?
MsOrange 03-23-2006, 06:23 PM what is this "offline" world that you speak of?

You know, friends, going to movies, going to concerts, going out to dinner. I know that you are getting married soon, so I would take that as very much "offline".

Nighthawk76 03-23-2006, 07:05 PM I think it might be important to note that this thread is just my opinion I am not accusing anyone of anything.
Karen* 03-23-2006, 07:15 PM I'm addicted. :(
gilligan fanatic 03-23-2006, 07:15 PM I think I do a good job having a life on and off line. I may do both, but I know I am on here way to much still. I do a lot of research and homework online and not just TV stuff too.
Fonzarelli 03-23-2006, 07:21 PM Still too much unfortunately. It's definately not that I don't have an offline line, but it's just that online I can discuss certain things with others I can't do offline. :)
Moonlight Lady 03-23-2006, 07:22 PM I'm hooked :)
BlueMolly2006 03-23-2006, 07:32 PM Still too much unfortunately. It's definately not that I don't have an offline line, but it's just that online I can discuss certain things with others I can't do offline. :)
I'm like that too. I have an offline life, but I feel better talking to my online friens about certain things that I wouldn't talk about to my offline friends.
I do spend a lot of time online, but I do a lot of job searching and online classes.
Polniaczek033 03-23-2006, 09:37 PM i used to be on CONSTANTLY. but i have better things to do now. i'm just on when i do the ass load of homework i have every night
80sTrivia 03-23-2006, 09:45 PM I do a great deal of research online, which requires me to be online quite a bit...
Jo_Luvs_Ketchup 03-23-2006, 11:30 PM I know I spend waaay too much time online, but I have more friends online than off and I never go anywhere anyway:lol:

I agree with you here. There's something about that non-face-to-face atmosphere that it's easier writing than speaking. It seems to be easier to convey certain thoughts, feelings and/or emotions in written form. I find some things are easier to discuss in writing while others are easier in voice, especially sentimental/important things that require those non-verbals. It also depends on how people word stuff. I know some people who are better at verbalizing many times than at writing. Some people write such little sentences but tend to say a lot in voice. So it also depends on the person, you could say.
Warm & Fuzzy 03-24-2006, 12:45 AM I used to spend the majority of my time online here on Sitcomsonline -- either that, or chatting on AIM with people whom I've met on Sitcomsonline, LOL.
Lately, however, I've been spending 50% of my time doing homework, and 50% of my time journaling [writing in my virtual journal].
The internet kinda starts getting boring when you get more responsibilities and other things on your mind.
dawsongirl 03-24-2006, 04:47 AM I never had a life to start with, even long before the internet. So why start one now?
I spend too much time on here simply out of boredom. Especially at work. But that's usually playing games or something. I don't talk as much as I used to back in the days when I hung out at the random board.
dawsongirl 03-24-2006, 04:50 AM I know I spend waaay too much time online, but I have more friends online than off and I never go anywhere anyway:lol:
:yeahthat I'm just not social.

That's a good sum-up for me too. I've just never been a social person. Online is a different story.

I often find it easier to convey my feelings in writing.
Janice 03-24-2006, 01:28 PM I used to spend too much time online, but it never interferred with my regular life. When I first discovered this site almost five years ago, my life was in turmoil, and it filled a void.
These days, I spend time online mostly in the morning and after my husband goes to bed at night. Depending on my day, I may post in between.
I still have days when I hang online all day, but not many.
Disney Guru 03-26-2006, 04:38 AM I spend some time online, not a lot though. Between college, homework, my bf, and work, i stay pretty busy. I"m usually on the most in the evenings. But I work online though, so that takes up a big part of my time.
