I'm curious to know who here has an accent, whether it be southern, mid-western, New Yawk, Baaaston, hispanic, etc. I use to have a thick New York accent before I went for speech lessons to get rid of it.

I'm from Michigan and never once thought I had an accent until I came across a site that has all the words that Michiganders say differently from people around the country. So yes, I do have a slight accent.

everyone has an accent no matter how standard it is; i guess i don't really have a special one, but on a less related note i tend to use alternate pronunciations for common words, ie "eye-ther" for "either".

It's pretty relative. It's my opinion the west coast, with the exception of some of California (and calling it an "accent" is debatable) doesn't have an accent, but if I were to go somewhere else, I'm sure they'd think I had one.

But honestly, the most neutral English pronounciations seem to come from the west coast and some other parts of the country.

Honestly, not TOO much difference. I think Long Islanders are more nasal, though. Plus, there's a long vowel sound for almost everything

Ditto, same here...cept Central New York. We gots nothing :(

But then again, any type of talking is an accent to anyone who speaks differently. So, basically, in a way we all have an accent.

No. But everynow and then I'll slip in some upper Midwest (Minnesota, Dakota, Wisconsin type) or some Southern on purpose. But no, I have no accent whatsoever.

My accent is typical New Mexican, hispanic-style, I guess. I dunno... Whatever that means....

Maybe we should all upload sound clips of our voices? It's easier to listen than to read what kinds of accents we each use. I love listening to accents/dialects audibly. It's cool to hear them in non-verbals. How about this. Do you like the idea? ;)

Southern people have told me I have a Chicago accent, but I guess I don't get it.

It's the really nasal A. Like how you say it ChicAHHHHgo and not ChiCAWgo. Though I don't know how you say it.

I used to have a real thick Eastern European accent when I started to learn English, but I was really young so I lost it. And now I have the Chicago accent. I can still turn the Eastern Euro accent on and off tho, so that comes into handy sometimes. :D

And no, Southern Californians do have an accent, albeit just a slight one. In the greater perspective, everyone does, but the most watered down, standard version of American English is from the Midwest. Areas like Ohio, Indiana, Illinois (outside of Chicago) Iowa and west into the mountain states, but not too far south like Oklahoma or Arkansas. This is the version of English they use in tv shows and movies because it's the most understandable.

Oh my gosh, do I. I have a thick southern belle kind of accent. I talk slow and with a horrible drawl. Think a degree less than Scarlet O'Hara, but with a raspy-smokey sound and that's my voice. It's very distinct, which I sometimes like and sometimes hate. I kinda sound like that Kellie Pickler off American Idol, only not as perky and more raspy.

I was surprised when I was in Oklahoma. I figured everyone would sound Southern because heck, you can hear Southern in Northern Missouri. But they sounded more "non-accent" down there than I expected.

I am from Michigan and I do NOT have an accent!

Well, I suppose it is a mid-western accent A friend of mine from Minnesota says I have an accent. But she does too!(Ever seen "Fargo"?)

I know people from Wisconsin, Michigan's Upper Penninsula(Da Yoopers), and Chicago. They all have their own but similar accents. But usually I can tell where a Mid-westerner is from just by listening to them. It's not so much an accent as it is the way or how they pronounce certain words.

People from Indiana and Ohio have different accents too.

Interestingly. Most broadcast schools teach their students to speak with a mid-western accent as it is easier on the ears!:D

I love accents! Especially the Caribbean/Jamaican, accents. So pretty, Mon!!

Hm, before diction and articulation lessons I had an extremely bad Rhode Island dialect...which is a mix of Boston and New York regionalisms. Nowadays...I don't have much of one, if anything I overcompinsate and overpronounce things so it sounds like I have a forced British accent, but more often than not it's just straightforward American speech. Although when I am in a rush, I tend to slur words and break into my old habits of saying things like "where'd ya pahk the cah?"

There are also distinct accents for each of the Five Boroughs of New York City. As for me, I've heard people tell me that I have a New Jersey accent, yet I was neither born nor raised in New Jersey. I was actually born in Queens(NYC), and raised on Long Island.

I'm sure I do. Not a really thick one like a southern accent; but I've lived in Wisconsin my whole life so probably a typical midwestern accent. No one has told me I do before, but I'm sure I have certain ways of pronouncing words that only people where I live would say them.

Everyone surely has an accent to a degree, even if it is based on dialect styles. I often hear/read "I don't have an accent." That is most-likely because it seems to be common in that area, so it would sound "common," but that doesn't mean there is no detectable accent. It's actually one of my weird hobbies and interests to listen to those non-verbals in voices/accents.

Rock Princess, cool dialect you have! I pictured your voice a little differently. Now when I read your posts, my brain is going to add your accent to your writing. ;)

I recorded this months ago, but I will upload it again. It's a twist to my voice. You will hear my normal accent talking in Swedish by giving a shoutout to SO! ;)

To be honest, I couldn't tell you. The best suggestion I can come up with is to listen to John Travolta in "Welcome Back, Kotter" and Carroll O'Connor in "All in the Family," but then again, I've heard kids from Queens who sound like Vinnie Babarino. When Mel Blanc was deciding on a new tougher-sounding voice for Bugs Bunny, he was torn between a Bronx or Brooklyn accent, and just decided to mix the two.

I live in Southeastern Ohio, and when I go up around Cleveland or Toledo people who run small record/CD/ DVD shops will ask me if I'm from Kentucky or Tennessee because I sound like one the tourists who come up to the lake. They said I sounded "twangy." Is that good or bad? They couldn't believe I was born in Ohio.
