View Full Version : Pierre April
Mr. Fuji 03-14-2006, 11:01 PM I just saw the segment today about Pierre April, a man who woke up one morning with no idea where or who he was. This was a very fascinating case very similar to that of Arthur Paul Beal.
My question is if there is any other information about this guy out there. UM left a lot of information out in the segment. What was he doing in Southern California if he is from Canada?
If anyone else saw this case and would care to comment on it I'd appreciate it!
synthisislab 03-15-2006, 12:56 AM I'm wondering how the guy had a Boston library card on him? Apparently he was doing alot of traveling in the US to have thought of San Diego and also have that library card. This is pure speculation, but I think that he probably tried to hitch a ride to San Diego for some reason (maybe to do a cross country tour of the US) and was robbed, got hit over the head, and was left on the side of the road where he awoke. I'm sure if he took public transit, someone would have recognized him on Unsolved Mysteries. And even if he rode as a hitchhiker, if they stopped somewhere, I'm surprised nobody that works at gas stations, rest areas, or motels/hotels came forward to claim that they saw him. This case is very baffling.
connieallbright 03-22-2006, 12:22 AM Didn't Paul Beal think he was from San Diego too?
Maybe I'm remembering it wrong.
boco357 03-22-2006, 11:46 PM With the goatee he reminds me of Dustin Diamond aka Samuel "Screech" Powers.
Tony Ballesteros 03-23-2006, 12:18 AM they played it three times in the past two weeks.
youd think if your entire network consisted of movies about some chicks period and reruns of shows, you could handle not runnig the same ****ing segment over and over

Mr. Fuji 03-23-2006, 04:31 PM Dude, can you believe? They showed this guy's story AGAIN yesterday. That's three times in the past week. What the hell is going on? I had never seen it once before this.
tamanshud 07-12-2014, 02:41 PM Any other information on this guy? The update doesn't say much about how he ended up in US. Is this one of the few cases with actual amnesia?
Sorry for bumping old threads, going through the DVR.
Guardian 07-12-2014, 02:48 PM How exactly could they not get a name from the library card anyway?
Lit Up 12-30-2018, 11:06 AM I call ******** on his story
5thcorps 12-31-2018, 03:15 PM I concur with the above comment. He was way too cocky and I feel manipulative describing his "ordeal". I never got a sense that he was being sincere at all. Especially how cocky he was when told his family was looking for him.
MissTree 03-28-2019, 09:25 AM I don't know. I sort of believe him. Maybe he was travelling across the US, which is not uncommon for we Canadians to do. Maybe he was running away from his life. But I bet he was hit over the head or something, probably to be robbed. I mean, why would he make this up? To what end?

I suppose that means you have never met a pathological liar? I know a number of them and they will lie about anything and everything, even stuff that nobody would ever need to lie about. I don't know if this guy was legit or not (I lean towards yes) but some people make just plain make up stories even there is no benefit (and many risks) to their lies.
Labonte18 03-28-2019, 10:34 AM At least this guy wasn't wanted.
Amazes me that people fake amnesia and go on TV when they're wanted by the police.

I guess he coould have been a pathological liar but odds are against it. People throw around that term but it is actually quite rare. Also, you would think more people or evidence from his past would have come forward to suggest this.

I disagree: I know of at least 4 pathologial liars in my immediate circle and I had a friend in childhood who was a textbook liar. I also had a High School teacher and a Junior High teacher who were pathological liars and made up the most ludicrous stories, forgetten that they contradicted what they told the class previously. In my anecdotal experience it is very common and it amazes me how many people don't even consider that many of the people featured on UM not only lie but believe their own lies.

Could it not be a case that the prospect of facing jail time or even just arrest might be enough to cause people to 'go over the edge' due to stress? It probably would to me.
Mike82 04-08-2019, 10:29 AM I finally watched this case for the first time in a very long time and it struck me right away: why on earth didn't anybody figure out he was originally from Quebec just based on his accent? It's so obvious to me he was from La Belle Province and when I saw the update I thought "it took THAT long to figure out the obvious?" While my accent is almost gone it only takes about 3 seconds to figure out my parents are from Newfoundland.

Because if you are an American, there are only five known choices for accents:
1) Boston or New York
2) Fargo
3) Southerner
4) Foreigner
5) No accent
Obviously you picked it up right away, but I don't think to people who aren't from Canada that it would be that obvious. I'm sure it helped when he went on TV, but when he was in San Diego there was probably zero chance than anyone there would know he was even from Canada, let alone which province. He certainly had an accent but most "U.S. Americans" probably can't tell the difference between Quebec and Minnesota, to be honest.

Personally, I think it's people who don't know the simplest fact..
"If you find yourself in a deep hole.. The first thing you should do is STOP DIGGING."

I just assumed they knew hew was from Quebec or France. It only took 3 months, didn't it, to figure out who he was?

That's partially my point: why on earth did it take 3 months to find him? Contrary to popular belief of Quebec being a French province there are plenty of English speakers particularly around Montreal who watched UM. That's not even mentioning THEY KNEW HIS REAL NAME!! Something just doesn't add up here.
Honestly, the biggest mystery to me is how a guy from Quebec managed to get a Boston library card.

Yes, I know about Quebec. I am right next door.
No, I meant he went on Unsolved Mysteries three months after he turned up with amnesia. I believe family contacted him almost immediately after the show.
He had clearly been travelling through the US, which is something I have also done. It is not hard to get a library card from anywhere as a guest.

Yeah, and remember.. this was the late 80's, early 90's.. Don't recall exactly when this aired, but the internet wasn't a thing then, and the 24 hour news cycle hadn't developed yet.. Had this been in today's world, he'd have been breaking news on CNN.. He'd have been positively IDed after Homeland Security came in and ran him through facial recognition.. they'd know exactly when and where he crossed the border.. Different world then.

The way he said "i can't even try to remember because it gives me bad headaches" was a dead give away
Maybe at some point intially his story might of been true, I am not that sure. But maybe he enjoyed this new person that came about
But I still don't get how it was not obvious to anyone who spoke to him for more than 15 mins, that he was from Canada, likely the Quebec area, and tried to do a bit of research. I know this was the early 90s but they still had basic computer systems, and you could call information
HennyLee13 10-14-2021, 11:57 AM I am rewatching UM ... AGAIN!
I just watched this episode last night... Pierre April's case is always so odd to me... as are MOST amnesia cases.
But this one... He HAS a library card with his name on it... But even though he remembers nothing he KNOWS that it's NOT his signature. Hmmm ok. He was drawn to California... but wouldn't you think gee I have a Library card for BOSTON maybe try there?
He was also missing for 3 months at the time the the Update came in and Identified him and he already has a FIANCE (That was looking through the items that his father sent in the "package"!
My theory.... He wanted to leave the 9-5 grind and go live in California and play music.... This was probably the easiest way to do it without his parent disapproval etc. Again just my theory, but I do NOT this this man had amnesia at all.
on a side note - I love the woman's theory that Pierre's amnesia was the real deal, because unlike the other liars she met he wasn't looking for anything. Ummm ok...

I don't buy any of the amnesia stories. Unless someone presents to the hospital with a massive headwound.

Then what do u think happened to Kyra Cook?
Labonte18 10-14-2021, 09:53 PM Then what do u think happened to Kyra Cook?
Externally, not massive. Just a small lump.
I'd be curious what the results of a scan would have shown. Remember, this is the 80's.. While perhaps doctors knew more, the general public had little knowledge of the fact that a 'simple' bump on the head could be fatal. Hell, even doctors are just in the past 15 years realizing what seemingly minor head injuries can lead to down the road.
Liam Neeson's wife and.. Sonny Bono.. A few of the cases that brought this fact more into the mainstream.
So.. I'm not willing to say this wasn't a massive headwound. To the eye, it wasn't, but what was below the surface?

Hola! Welcome to the boards! Thanks for jumping right in with a theory-- I love it when folks do that! :)
