It starred Victor French (Mr. Edwards from Little House). I liked the show. It was different, but alot of people didn't like it. It also starred Kene Holliday, Vernee Watson and a very young Melanie Griffith. The name was in part to the fact that Jimmy Carter was president at the time.

I remember that show. It was always one of my favorites. It was syndicated pretty good in the 1980's at least in NC. I haven't seen it since though.

I really wish it would be seen again but I think their was only about 44 episodes. A DVD release would be great though. :)

I thought it was a pretty funny show. It managed to last two seasons (from
Sept. 15, 1977 to Aug. 23, 1979). Victor French later returned to LITTLE
HOUSE and then went on to co-star in HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN. Kene Holliday
was a regular on MATLOCK during its first three seasons (1986-1989). Trivia
note: Harvey Vernon (who played Deputy Jasper) later guest-starred in an
episode of HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN, reuniting him with former co-star French.

You know if you had the options you have today back in 77 you would have never watched Carter Country. Nobody would have-lol

I still would have. It was syndicated in the 1980's where I lived and I had cable then and I still watched. I think even the least successful sitcoms from the 1970's are better than most of the hit sitcoms of today.

Maybe Carter Country is better in syndication rather than Primetime

Out of all the shows that was on primetime between 77-79, why was this one your favorite? I'm very interested in knowing-lol

I think with the limited channels available on t.v. it was easy to watch new shows and get into them. Which is why Carter Country was easy to like. It was something different. Nowadays, with SOOOO MANY CHANNELS and cable channels, I miss so many new shows because I am stuck watching something else and I never give the up and coming shows a shot.

It was funny to me anyway, wish it were being shown on TVland. I liked Roy Moby and the Mayor, Rooy, Rooy, Rooy, Be a big boy and Handleit handleit. And that's from memory, I haven't seen the show since it was first shown on primetime tv.

I'm surprised the Carter Country Cast made the Front Cover of TV guide-lol I thought a show had to be a HIT for the cast to appeared on TV Guide's front cover

Maybe it was a hit when it debuted, then the ratings slipped and kept going downhill from there.

Other short-lived series made the cover of TV GUIDE, incl. KAREN, LOTSA LUCK, CPO
SHARKEY, FLO, etc.; while some longer-running shows never made the cover
(e.g., THE BILL DANA SHOW, AMOS 'N' ANDY, 227, WHAT'S HAPPENING!!, etc.).

Enjoyed this in its original primetime run and then the syndicated reruns (which my local ABC picked up and ran the show in the afternoons for over a year). A very unusual case where a 2 season show got picked up for stripping M-F. Of course, I haven't seen the show since then.

Oh.

Not only was there not cable, but people had no VCR's either, so it wasn't like you could go rent a movie or pop in a DVD, since DVD players were not around either. Television had its limitations, but we didn't know it THEN, we know that NOW. What aired back then was a lot of sitcoms. You don't have that now and we have all these channels. So what good is all the channels if the quality of television shows are questionable?

But I am talking abt the limitations we had back then as far as how many channels we had and what was shown on them. We had no other choice for television entertainment. Carter Country was a good show.

Still, back then even though the channels only went up to 13. Three of those were networks and the rest were either public channels, local channels or channels that aired reruns of shows, old shows, movies, etc. But the quality of programming was awesome. Look at tv now Solomon, reality programming galore, too many shows getting the axe, not enough sitcoms, etc. So, just because we have more channels NOW, it doesn't improve the quality of shows we see on television.

I seen the ratings you posted on that new thread Solomon, but it doesn't take away from the fact I LIKED THE SHOW! What is wrong with liking that show? And as far as the tv guide cover is concerned, I think the article that was inside was abt how television perceived the south. Sometimes the cover showed a tv character but it had nothing to do with the show being a big-time hit.

Well, first off, Mr. Smartypants:p , I was alive in 1977 and you weren't.
Secondly, I lived in a three channel universe--we had ABC, CBS, and NBC. We did not even have PBS in those days. I lived on a farm, so I could relate to the more rural humor. And if the show was that stinking bad, I don't think I would have kept watching the syndicated reruns.

Of course, I haven't seen the show in years so my thoughts may change
