The Eternal Question: Who's prettier....Ginger or Mary Ann?
Chuck Cunningham's abrupt departure on Happy Days created a syndrome called 'Chuck Cunningham SyndromeE.

dlemond 03-08-2006, 10:53 PM Television folklore was created with Fonzie jumping the shark on Happy Days.
It has become the status of a show that is going downhill- and spawned a website on just when shows "jumped the shark"
"Who Shot JR" on Dallas is another part of folklore, a time when the nation was captivated by this silly cliffhanger.

Silly??????? My God, I couldn't wait to see the shooter. And it was tough waiting an extra month to find out since there was a writers' strike going on at the time. That "silly" cliffhanger spawned all the other nighttime soaps to follow suit.

Well yes, it is a little silly when a whole nation rallies behind the mystery of a tv show. It's a TV show. It was a national phenomenon.
And its not like it was the first cliffhanger in history, but whatever it was the timing was perfect to captivate the nation.
Janice 03-08-2006, 11:10 PM Many claim that on The Brady Bunch, Carol Brady's marital status was never clearly defined before she married Mike. Divorced, widowed?
Speaking of The Brady Bunch, where did their pooch Tiger disappear to?
And that is NOT Will Smith's mother in opening credits of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air.
Can someone please tell me Ward Cleaver's profession?
Ireneparalegal 03-08-2006, 11:14 PM Well yes, it is a little silly when a whole nation rallies behind the mystery of a tv show. It's a TV show. It was a national phenomenon.
And its not like it was the first cliffhanger in history, but whatever it was the timing was perfect to captivate the nation.
It was the first cliffhanger to captivate a nation. you said it in your own post. AND IT WAS AN INTERNATION PHENOMENON. Not just in the U.S. They showed armed guards around the master tape being delivered to a london t.v. station that aired the show. They also showed people all around the world who had bets on who shot him. I had guessed correctly it was his sister-in-law. And of course, it was a t.v. show, but it gave birth to Dynasty, Knots Landing, and all the others that imitated but never emulated.
treky 03-09-2006, 02:15 AM I remember reading at the time, that CBS (the network that aired "Dallas") got mad at TV GUIDE because they printed the outcome of that cliffhanger before the episode aired. For anyone who dosen't know-or still cares after all these years-it was J.R.s sister-in-law, Kristen (who was then killed the next season)

Early in the first season of "That 70's Show," Donna was the middle child of the Pinciotti family.
She had an older sister who was mentioned once as 'being away at college" and a younger sister, who made an appearance in one episode.
By the time the first season ended, Donna was an only child.
Freaky...

Ireneparalegal 03-10-2006, 06:32 PM Lucy gets a brand new washing machine and by the next season she buys another washing machine (giving the old one to the Mertzes) what the hell was she doing??? Laundry for the whole building?
Ireneparalegal 03-10-2006, 06:39 PM What happened to the Brady girls cat Fluffy???
gilligan fanatic 03-10-2006, 06:40 PM what happened to Beaver's grandparents.
One story i remember hearing years ago was the child actor who origininateded the role of Chris Partidge on "The Partridge Family" was killed in a car accident and replaced by Chris Partirdge #2 in the second season.
Adamantium 03-10-2006, 10:21 PM NewsRadio - How can such a great show be so low rated? (Same goes for 'Arrested Development' and 'Andy Richter Controls the Universe')
Okay, maybe it doesn't count. ;)
'Gilligan's Island' - How did the Skipper stay his weight throughout the show? They were all eating the same meals, and he seemed to do a lot of physical work. You'd think he would trim down some. lol
'M*A*S*H' - The early years (Henry, Trapper, Frank) versus the later years (Potter, BJ, Winchester).
Having a baby one season and the next season, the kid is five years old. (Growing Pains, Step by Step)

That is true, I never thought of that. In the episode Physical Fatness he is even trying to loose weight and he can't do it.

Of course, I'm glad he didn't. A thin Skipper wouldn't have been as good. :)
treky 03-11-2006, 02:08 AM "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES"-why did Miss Hathaway stay with Mr. Drysdale all those years?
"THE MARY TYLER MOORE"-why didn't Mr. Grant ever fire Ted? And who were all those guys in the back of the newsroom, why didn't they ever talk to anyone, and where were they in the final episode? Also, with a newsroom FULL of people, how come the same 4 or 5 were the only ones who ever talked?
"MASH"-why did they have the longest korean war in history?
"CHEERS"-how come nobody ever pays for their drinks?
there's millions of others, but it would take me to long to type them all!!

someone wrote a fan fic. once about "GILLIGANS ISLAND" that offered some explanations as to why the Howells took all that money and clothes on a 3 hour tour, and why the proffesor took all those chemicals along. I think it's on Bob Denvers web site at www.bobdenver.com
and you're right; the interior of the Brady house didn't match the exterior.

Happy Days: How long were the guys in high school?
dlemond 03-11-2006, 06:24 PM M*A*S*H:
The Korean War: 1950 - 1953 vs. M*A*S*H: 11 seasons

The Korean War: 1950 - 1953 vs. M*A*S*H: 11 seasons
Ah, but there was never any indication (aside from the various holiday episodes) that each season was supposed to correspond to a year of the war. Which leads into the greatest shortcoming of M*A*S*H: absolutely no cohesive continuity regarding a timeline.
Adamantium 03-11-2006, 06:49 PM Happy Days: How long were the guys in high school?
That's one that's always bugged me. It's like time went slow for the guys, but Joanie grew up normally.
Season 1: 1974 (Richie was a Junior)
Season 2: 1974-75 (Richie was still a Junior)
Season 3: 1975-76 (Richie was STILL a Junior)
Season 4: 176-77 (Richie is a Senior. They also graduate this season)
So they had the four years of high school. However, three of those four years were spent in the 11th grade. While Joanie grew up in those three years.
The same goes with 'That 70's Show'. The first five seasons are spent in high school. Plus, it's been 1979 since season six (it's now season eight). They just ahd a Valentine's Day episode this season. Which would make it February. There's no way those two seasons prior were all set in January!
treky 03-11-2006, 10:57 PM maybe on "HAPPY DAYS" Richie and the guys were EXTREMELY poor students, who kept flunking their junior year.

MASH had so many inconsitincies, it would take up too much space to list them all. I'll list one, though: Radar seemed to be "one of the guys" when the series began (he's even seen drinking with them in the swamp in a few episodes, and in another one, drinking brandy and smoking a cigar) but, as the series goes on, he seems to progress backwards in age.

I never knew the Mertzes had a dog, the Ricardos did on "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour"; maybe you're thinking of that.
and what ever happened to it?

Happy Days: How long were the guys in high school?
right; in the opening of "All in the Family" the Bunkers house didn't have a front porch, in the show, it does.
And, in "Cheers" the bar has a large window on the right side of the door, but on the exterior shots of the building, ther's a series of long, narrow windows in that spot.

I believe it was a season one episode titled "The Diet" in which the Mertzes dog appears. He's under the table and Lucy fights him for his food.

yeah but you never actully see the ouside of the bar from on the stairs...
James 03-12-2006, 12:49 AM On The Waltons in the episode "Day of Infamy," about the December 7, 1941, attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor during World War II, Mary Ellen's husband Dr. Curt Willard was killed since he was at Pearl Harbor on the "Day of Infamy." (She received a telegram at the end; Jim Bob read it to the family.) A few episodes later, Curt reappeared as Curt Packard and was living in Florida! Not only that, he did not remember Mary Ellen at all!
treky 03-12-2006, 01:57 AM yeah but you never actully see the ouside of the bar from on the stairs...no, I mean when they show that shot of the exterior from across the street.

Whatever happened to the Mertz dog
speaking of dogs, what ever happened to the Douglases dog on "Green Acres"? Remember, they would ocasionally show it in some of the early episodes. It's name was "Mignyon" or something like that.
And what ever became of the Clampetts dog "Duke" on "The Beverly Hillbillies"? And Mrs. Drysdales french poodle "Claude"?
treky 03-12-2006, 02:08 AM what happened to the pickup truck that Andy had on the first episode of "The Andy Griffith show"? And Rob & Laura Petries pool table? And the giant rock that was supposably in their basement?
troopoleon8897 03-12-2006, 01:53 PM no, I mean when they show that shot of the exterior from across the street.
ohh now I know what you mean, hmm i never realized before...
Adamantium 03-12-2006, 04:40 PM I was watching a final season episode of "The Brady Bunch." In it, Jan is trying to cinvince Peter to be her campaign manager. He wants to be the campaign manager for Jan's opponent. She tells him that "Blood is thicker than water." So what, are we supposed to think that the Brady kids are now blood related?
Ireneparalegal 03-12-2006, 10:00 PM On The Waltons in the episode "Day of Infamy," about the December 7, 1941, attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor during World War II, Mary Ellen's husband Dr.
It wasn't a few episodes later. It was either one or two seasons later. And they did explain how he "came back to life" ...he never died in the war. It was an error. A BIG ERROR. His body was I.D'd as him, when it really was someone else's.
He did remember Mary Ellen. He pretended not to know her because he didn't want to interfere in her current love life. Curt was no longer a "man" in the physical sense and he couldn't be a husband to her the way he felt she deserved.
Ireneparalegal 03-13-2006, 09:39 PM I love this thread!
treky 03-14-2006, 02:15 AM also, why did the Cunnighams on "Happy Days" all of a sudden have a different living room, starting with season 2? And Felix and Oscar on "The Odd Couple" suddenly had a different apartment, also at the start of season 2? I know why they did it in real life, but they could have had some sort of explanation!
The same with Jeannies bottle changing color at the beggining of season 2 of "I Dream of Jeannie"?
Fleet 03-15-2006, 03:42 AM The Eternal Question: Who's prettier....Ginger or Mary Ann?
MARY ANN!!! :D
Ireneparalegal 03-15-2006, 11:18 AM Roseanne: In the first episode that shows "Arnie", he kisses Roseanne. Roseanne gets all giddy abt it and calls her sister Jackie. They have girl-talk abt that kiss. He is mentioned to be Dan's friend, but never a guy from the girls' high school days.
It is never mentioned that this is the same guy that all the ladies despised in the later season when Jackie has a one-night drunken stand with Arnie because she is depressed. All the ladies gather at the mall restaurant where Roseanne works and talk abt how they all made a blood oath to never let Arnie get a chance at any one of them.
I Love Lucy: Lucy Ricardo has mentioned in how she met Ricky during a blind date with a conga player.
However, in the hour-long Lucy and Desi show, there is an episode where Lucy and a girlfriend travel to Tijuana, and run into two men, one of whom is Ricky, and that's how they met.
troopoleon8897 03-15-2006, 05:03 PM Roseanne: In the first episode that shows "Arnie", he kisses Roseanne. Roseanne gets all giddy abt it and calls her sister Jackie. They have girl-talk abt that kiss. He is mentioned to be Dan's friend, but never a guy from the girls' high school days.

even though I love Roseanne there gets to be more and more inconsistencys as the seasons went on, Here's one that I have always been fasanneted with...
Whats with The Basement Changing back and Forth...
here's a possible explanation (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=163291)
Was Bev Really A Lesbian...? she said she always had buy a playboy before she slept with roseanne's Dad but what about when she had sex with jake or wanted to go out with the dance instructure in Ballroom Blitz is she really a lesbian or did she just want attention? I know it was explained it the finale but im talking if the finale never happened...
And Where did Roseanne & Dan Grow up...? I know I explained this alot in another thread but I can't find a link to it so I'll explain it again...
We know that Roseanne, Jackie, and Dan all went to the same high school along with several other side characters (Ann-Marie & Chuck Mitchell, Ziggy, Phyllis Zimmer, Crystal Anderson-Conner, Etc.) Now many times it was said that they either went to Lanford High School or that lanford was the town that there High School was in. However Roseanne & Jackie both lived in a house in elgin (I believe thats where it was located) until they graduated and then Bev continued to live there until she moved to lanford... So how could Dan and Roseanne be Lanford High students and a couple in High School when Elgin is 45mins to 1:15 minutes away (estimated from the real county that fake lanford was mentioned to be in, in "Toto were not in Kansas anymore") Now either Roseanne and Jackie took a really long bus ride or the writers completely missed this goof...
treky 03-15-2006, 05:34 PM MASH and THE ODD COUPLE also have a lot of inconsitensies-just some of them are:
MASH-when Col. Blake gets discharged, Radar says it's because he "got all his points". But, the army stopped using the point system after World War 2, it was never used on doctors, and it was never used on officers.
THE ODD COUPLE-in a flashback episode, they show Oscar & Felix meeting when they both serve on a jury. But, in another episode, you see that they knew each other before that, when they were in the army.
MASH-in a couple early episodes, Hawkeye mentions his mother and sister. But, another time he says his mother died when he was little and he never had a sister.
THE ODD COUPLE-once, Oscar and Blanche are looking at their wedding photos and Oscar says he never returned the tuxedo he rented for his wedding. But, in a flashback episode, he was married in the army, and never wore a tux.
and, too many more to list!!
troopoleon8897 03-15-2006, 09:44 PM another thing is how big of sluts all the Golden Girls must be (even though I love the show) They each have like 20 million sons & daughters and they also have tons of other relatives...
Ireneparalegal 03-15-2006, 09:58 PM Roseanne: Dan was working on a boat in the early season. Then it disappeared. It returned again in another season, and it was never talked abt again.
tvfan0101 03-15-2006, 10:41 PM MASH-when Col. Blake gets discharged, Radar says it's because he "got all his points". But, the army stopped using the point system after World War 2, it was never used on doctors, and it was never used on officers.
I am not so sure about this one. I have read that there WAS a point system used in the Korean Conflict and that it WAS used on officers. I have yet to see any reference to whether or not the point system was used for doctors, nor do I have definite proof that it was used in the Korean Conflict. Still, I think this is one of the classic M*A*S*H goofs that gets posted just about everywhere (really, it is annoying how so many sites list the same goofs - IMDb, Wikipedia, various fan sites).
The other one you mentioned is true, though. There were plenty of goofs regarding various characters and their families. Or characters and their names. Or really, just lots of goofs.

tvfan0101 03-16-2006, 05:59 PM well, I read that in "THE COMPLETE BOOK OF M*A*S*H" and various websites.
I have read it on several websites as well. However, I just did a bit of research and it looks like initially the US Army did not use a point system during the Korean Conflict. It was introduced in August of 1951. Hence the confusion over whether or not it was used. Still nothing on whether or not it was used on doctors.
I also have The Complete Book of M*A*S*H -- which I find to be a little less than complete...
Ireneparalegal 03-16-2006, 07:22 PM In season one of Roseanne, Dan mentions that he has a shoe size of 11 and then later on in the "Mall" episode he says size 13. Dang, his shoe size grew real fast!!!
Ireneparalegal 03-16-2006, 07:26 PM In the pilot of the Cosby show, he was known as Clifford, it was later Heathcliff.
In I Love Lucy, one episode in an early season their wedding anniversary is on the 19th...in the California episodes, it is now on the 7th.
Ireneparalegal 03-16-2006, 07:53 PM on the Brady Bunch when Greg thinks he is a "man" and wants his own room, Mike and Carol talk abt it and Carol mentions maybe converting the attic for Greg. TripperFan 03-16-2006, 08:40 PM I'd love to know how you go from being a totally inept, niave daddy's girl to waitress (o.k. - that's believable) but then jump to assistant buyer for Bloomingdale's to what seems to be a senior buyer for a top designer in the matter of about 5 years as Rachel did in Friends.
I mean, it takes a little more than being a clothes horse, fashion savvy rich kid to learning more than just choosing clothing lines for top dept. stores and designers!
And we won't even get started on how they all seemed to have plenty of money. I've heard the "theories" but they don't fully jive to me.
James 03-17-2006, 02:13 AM In the "Dinner Out" episode of The Wonder Years, which took place in 1971 (aired December 4, 1991), it was said that Jack (the father) was celebrating his 43rd birthday, yet a copy of his birth certificate said his birthday was November 6, 1927. Wouldn't it have been his 44th birthday instead?

Normally I do not respond to my own posts, but they also could have (1) had Jack's birthday be December 4, 1927, or (2) aired this November 6, 1991, since that was also a Wednesday/a night for TWY just like December 4.
Chocoholic 03-25-2006, 12:14 PM On MASH, if Radar was psychic, then why didn't he warn Henry Blake that his plane was going to be shot down on his way home? He could have saved him!
How was Carla allowed to keep her job at the Cheers bar for so long? In real life, she probably wouldn't have lasted a week in customer service with that nasty sourpuss attitude. I know I wouldn't give my money to a business that allowed its employees to treat customers that way.
tvfan0101 03-25-2006, 01:58 PM On MASH, if Radar was psychic, then why didn't he warn Henry Blake that his plane was going to be shot down on his way home? He could have saved him!
Radar was never supposed to be psychic. He had a vague extra-sensory perception that allowed him to "hear" choppers before anyone else and anticipate the needs of Colonels Blake and Potter.

Hogan's Heroes was the same way. Occasionally they would drop a hint or two about what year it may be (one time they mentioned D-Day, so they were in 1944 by that point), but unless you were paying attention to those hints, you were never sure. The show started in 1942, but I don't know if in those 6 seasons, they ever got to 1945 or not.
tv star collector 04-07-2006, 06:15 PM All of a sudden Buffy Summers had a younger sister named Dawn, and everyone
in Sunnydale knew her -- although Dawn had never been seen, or even mentioned, before! (An explanation, albeit a supernatural kind, was eventually
given. Dawn, it turned out, was something called "The Key." I guess the

treky 04-09-2006, 01:17 AM in the first episode of "THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW" (not the pilot-the episode "SICK BOY & THE SITTER") the Petries neighbors were Fred & Dottie-no last name was given-and they had a teenage dater, Janie. Then in "OH HOW WE DANCED, THE NIGHT THAT WE MET" Janie is Richies age.
Fleet 04-09-2006, 02:26 AM Bewitched - Which Darrin Stephens was better?
I really enjoyed the first (Dick York) Darrin. Great reactions, especially when he was arguing with Endora.
His acting was so good, one would think that he was actually living with a witch and had to endure all of her relatives.

I agree. I also think that he and Samantha played a couple in love better than with the second Darrin. They were more believable to me.

i know. you could almost see it in his eyes. Sargeant seemed stiff and tough.

Exactly.
York had that "rubber-faced" expression which was real funny.
TV_on_the_Porch 04-14-2006, 01:20 PM One story i remember hearing years ago was the child actor who origininateded the role of Chris Partidge on "The Partridge Family" was killed in a car accident and replaced by Chris Partirdge #2 in the second season.
I'm flabbergasted that nobody responded to this. I'd never seen such a rumor before and it's certainly false. The teen mags of the time reported that Jeremy Gelbwaks' (Chris #1) father was relocating the family due to some kind of business transfer, so there was no mystery. And of course there's been plenty of gossip in recent years about the real reason for the Chris swap being bad blood between Jeremy and Danny Bonna-deuce (as we called him way back when ;) ) So no, Beaver wasn't killed in Vietnam and the brown haired Chris didn't have a close encounter of the worst kind with a sedan on his bike. He's alive and well and working with computers.

Yeah, he was the original JIM CARREY. His face showed alot of what was missing from Dick Sargeant.

The poster isn't saying it's TRUE. They are saying they remember hearing the rumor (one of many). The thread is abt sitcom, television folklore. So we are posting what that is.
treky 04-14-2006, 04:10 PM also, what ever happened to Jethriene on "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES"?
tv star collector 04-14-2006, 05:32 PM On Feb. 22, 1988, Stephen Cox interviewed Max Baer Jr. for his book, THE
BEVERLY HILLBILLIES. During their conversation, Cox asked Baer if he minded
playing Jetherene.
BAER: "In one regard. I would go in and play Jethro in the morning. Take all the
makeup off and put on a base which got rid of the beard that showed up in
black and white. Play Jetherene. Then take the makeup off and play Jethro
again. I'd do that two and three times a day. My skin was raw and all
broken out. I said, 'Hey, I'm not gonna do it.' We switched the schedule and
it worked better and the character was fun."

Uhhhh . . . I really don't think it's outside the scope of this thread to point out the patently false nature of such folklore, especially when not doing so might leave the impression in someone's mind that the story is true.
OTOH it might be wavering off topic a bit to mention that the old wives tale about risk of absorbing radiation from sitting too close to the TV for too long is obviously true....

yes, he also says that in the interview with him that's on the DVD. But I mean they could have AT LEAST said what happened to her, or had an episode wher she left.
