View Full Version : Should females hang out with their boyfriends?

I am talking about doing male things. My nephew's girlfriend does this, and I think it could hurt their relationship. For example, whenever he comes over and watches the game with me and my brothers, she tags along. She does not follow sports, and she looks out of place when she comes. And in December, my nephew's best friend had a birthday party, and she went. I don't know if she was invited, but everytime he goes somewhere, she has to follow him. I am sure he is not invited to her female functions, so she needs to back off. I personally don't care or give a damn, and he doesn't seem to mind, but he needs to put his foot down (or up her ass) if she continues to do this. It could hurt their relationship. I know I wouldn't want my girlfriend coming with me to watch sports with friends or brothers. Any thoughts?

My belief is that ONLY if the girl really enjoys the event. I don't think she should do it "just because" she feels insecure in anyway or to force herself. It has to be mutual. And if she doesn't enjoy that sort of thing, she shouldn't have to do it.

By her following him around it certainly sounds like she's insecure or lonely. That doesn't look right. Maybe she can make some friends or hang out with someone else during these sporting sessions, since she seems out of place.

It's the same thing when we turn the tables around: Should males hang out with their girlfriends? Same answer as above. It works both ways.

Well, if you say he doesn't seem to mind then what's the problem?

If he wants her to stop, then that'll be their issue to address when they come to it. Every couple is different, and some enjoy being together more often than others. If this is what works for them, then you should be happy that your nephew is happy.

I don't need myself checked! Read what I said above, I said I personally don't give a damn, the only reason why I posted this is because it could ruin their relationship. If my post makes no sense, why did you reply?

You have to consider the source, GARFIELDKOOL. Typical fonzi.

If he doesn't seem to mind, then you are the one that needs to stop being so 'macho super 4 balls guy' and not say that she shouldn't be there. Why it can hurt their relationship? If they can do things that both enjoy there's nothing wrong with that, just in your mental attitude.

Look, I know my nephew. Yes, he doesn't seem to mind, but I can tell when he's happy. Right now, he's just putting up with her. She lets him call all the shots. He's very independent and doessn't need anyone to call the shots for him. When he told me that HE was coming over, to watch the game, SHE came with him, leading me to believe she bullied her way over.

Both enjoy?! I stated from the get go that she don't follow sports. How can someone enjoy something they don't follow?

That would be his call. Why he wouldn't want her to hang out even though she doesn't enjoy the sport or whatever; maybe it's just for the company.

Well, lemme put myself in her shoes. If it were me, I wouldn't tag along, even if he asked me to go, because I don't enjoy hanging out where I'm not wanted or I won't have any fun. But at, like, the sports thing, if all the other guys knew me and I knew them, I might. It's just TV. But if sports bore you, then don't go.

Yet maybe she just wants to spend time with him, and share his interests. Nothing wrong with that.

It's obvious that I am outnumbered here! But the bottom line is, she needs to give her man some space! They live together, and she comes to his job every payday! What's wrong with bonding with your uncles and friends for a few hours?! Give the man some room! Let me just add to all you who don't see my point is that when she did come over to watch football with the guys, she was so uncomfortable, she was about to fall asleep! You could tell she didn't want to be there, and she should have stayed her ass home. I didn't say anything to her because it wasn't an atmosphere for her! My nephew couldn't get comfortable or stay as long as he wanted to because of her! So therefore, she needs to stop hanging out with her boyfriend who was male bonding!

he obviously doesn't care if she does it. If he did, I'm presume he would have told her.

Who are YOU to say she 'has' to do this-and-that, or that she 'has' to give her man some room? What authority do you think you ahve and why do you think you earned that? Really, it's none of your bussiness.

Fonz, man you are impossible! Would you want your girlfriend "handcuffed" to you all the time?

Couples should have their own space, whether they are just dating or married. It is not 100% healthy to hang out with your partner 24/7. I agree with you Garfield on this one. Is the relationship new? Usually in new relationships, it is more common for couples to spend a lot of time together.

Thanks, Brian. I wish you would get that through Fonzarelli. They been together for over 2 years, and lived together for just under 1 year. Yeah, it's none of my business, but my nephew needs his space, because like I mentioned earlier, he doesn't go with her on her female outings.

I think it is normal for you to feel the way you do. It is obvious to me that you would like to spend some quality time with your nephew. I commend that. It is good to have "Boys night out" every once and awhile.

While I agree that couples should have some space and not be joined at the hip 24/7. You first posted that you "don't care or give a damn" when you obviously must care or you wouldn't have posted in the first place. It sound like you miss guying around with your nephew and you can't really do that while she's there. There is nothing wrong with wanting to hang out with just your nephew, but please don't try and say you are just concerned for their relationship. When it seems obivious that you just don't want to have her there all the time. Which is fine but just admit it. Why though are you placing the blame just on her and saying she bullies her way over to places? You said he was very independent and that is doesn't bother him having her there. Couldn't he just like having her around wanted to bring her?

No.

But obvious your nephew doesn't have a problem with it, and neither does his girlfriend.

By the way, you keep stating it like it's your (moral) principle, like it should be a law. Why?

Well, I never got an answer to my question. So I will post my thoughts. I don't think it's good to be together 24/7. That can be sickening. I love football. I love baseball. I love to watch boxing too. I can watch other sports. My man will ask me if I want to go with him to watch games with him at his friends' house. I usually say "yes", other times, "no". I like that he asks me. His friends don't have an issue with it. They laugh and joke around like I was just another guy. I guess I give them that peace of mind that they don't need to behave a certain way. They don't ignore me. I feel like together, we are a bunch of friends. I wouldn't go if I was going to be bored, or if I was tired.

Sorry, Irene. I wasn't ignoring your question. I was trying to figure out how to answer the question. Most of the girls I went out with weren't sports fans, so it was hard for me to answer that. My first girlfriend, or I should say what was puppylove, she liked football and basketball. So I probably could watch sports with her.....to a certain extent. But, it isn't about watching sports with your mate, it is about giving your mate space. Another girlfriend of mine, I got her into basketball, but I don't think I could kick back and enjoy the game with her. She wasn't a purist, so I wouldn't want her coming with me while I am bonding with the guys. If I am sounding like a sexist, forgive me, but all I am saying is that in a relationship, the female and male needs to give each other space.

I like your response. and it is an easy one. Just the fact you mentioned sports in your initial post made sports the essential topic. If you want to know whether a guy/girl she spend all their time together, the answer is a flat out NO!!!! that is crazy. give each other some space baby!

I never understood that "male bonding" crap. And I don't understand "female bonding" (if there is such a thing) either.

This girl is obviously not like me. I'm a total loner and I like my "me" time. Most of the time at home, I'd rather be alone. I also get sick of being around most people for too long...because they won't go away. Chalk it up to being an only child with only a couple friends. So if I were living with my boyfriend/fiancee/husband, and he wanted to go to some dude's house and "bond", I'd probably be glad to have the time to myself.

If your nephew has a problem with it and he hasn't told her about it, he needs to grow some balls and let her know what's up. Anyway I see my boyfriend every night after he gets home from work. I love sports, and he doesn't. If I want to sit and watch a hockey game, he'll usually watch it with me. Why? Because it's compromise. He does things with me that I like and that he might not like, and some things I do with him I don't like. I love to watch Hockey, he doesn't. He loves to watch James Bond movies, and I don't, but I watch them anyway, because in the end we just want to see each other and be with each other. It shouldn't matter what we are doing, as long as we can be together.
