View Full Version : The worst kind of cramp??
Brad Russ 03-02-2006, 03:09 AM I'd have to go with stomache cramps mysely. I'm on medication for numerous stomache problems, and this is something Iv'e been dealing with for most of my life. What makes them the worst to me, isn't the pain itself, although it is very painful, but the amount of time that they can last. I think foot cramps are the most painful, but they usually only last 30 or 40 seconds, and I'll take 30 seconds of excrutiating pain, over really bad pain that lasts a long time, any day of the week. Do you guys ever suffer with any of these problems?? If so, which do you think is the worse??
dawsongirl 03-02-2006, 03:18 AM Yeah...I abhor stomach problems. Always sends me into a panic attack.
Currently I am having neck problems, and I am seriously tired of them.
But gotta give a shout out to menstrual cramps too! I hate to get them worse than I already do (they're just dull aches).

Dutabi84 03-02-2006, 03:29 AM Stomach...it sucks when I'm trying to jog, and a horrible cramp jumps into my stomach out of nowhere.
Those neck cramps. They seem to be even more random than the stomach cramps. And they last a lot longer, too.
moeee 03-02-2006, 03:32 AM Leg cramps are terrible to get.

Oh yes, neck problems are terrible. I have a history of neck and back problems myself. You might want to look into getting a posturpedic pillow. I first used one when I spent the night at my bro's and his fiancees place a few months back, and was shocked at how good it felt. The most comfortable sleep I'd had in years!! I bought one about two weeks ago, and honestly have had no neck, back, or sleeping problems since. They run for about $19.99, but I think they're definitely worth it. You might want to look into that.
Chelsea 03-02-2006, 04:18 AM If I get out of bed the wrong way, I get REALLY painful leg cramps that take anywhere from 5 minutes to a day to go away. And let me tell you, trying to go to class on a campus built like WKU (uphill to class 1, downhill to 2, uphill to 3...) is not a situation you want to find yourself having a leg cramp in
Moonlight Lady 03-02-2006, 10:32 AM But gotta give a shout out to menstrual cramps too!
Major Ditto!
Stomach pain and also back pain are the worse for me.
Ireneparalegal 03-02-2006, 11:19 AM 1. Menstrual cramps!!!!! :D
2. You're "cramping" my style...:D
BTW whenever you do get a leg cramp do this: right when it starts, or even if it's already in the process of killing you, stretch out your leg and force your toes to point in your direction; you know, just have your toes pointed as far as you can towards your face. a physical therapist told me this and ever since, I have never had to deal with a leg cramp EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!! Now, I just deal with the two that I posted above!:D

I got one word for you, hysterectomy!! Just kidding. I had a friend who got a hysterectomy awhile back, and although she doesn't get her period anymore, it did make her go through the change of life within a matter of months. Any guy who's seen the episode of AITF where Edith goes through the change, knows what a scary thought that is. LOL!! Anyway, I don't mean to make light of such a serious issue. To all the women out there, I'm sorry you have to go through this each month. :(
Thanks for the tip on the leg cramps!! :) I rarely ever get leg cramps, but when I do, they're usually like cripplingly painful, so that information may really help me. Does anyone here know what some of the causes of foot and leg cramps are?? Iv'e heard that dehydration, and too much caffeine can cause them, but don't know how true that is.
swedeace 03-02-2006, 11:50 AM Yep, I say "menstrual cramps" are almost going to be number one for females. They just....hurt. Not only the abdominal pain but also other symptoms likely to be associated (headache, migraine, nausea, vomiting, bloating, fatigue, etc).... Those are what usually make it worse. It's just uncomfortable....
Anyway, as for the ones you listed, I would say "leg cramp." Ouch! It makes it difficult to walk.

Thanx Mel.
I have heard lack of potassium in the diet is one reason for leg cramps. One should eat more bananas and potatos. Also, like you said, dehydration, need to drink more water. All I know is, since my physical therapist told me that thing abt how to stop a leg cramp, I don't worry no more abt them now that I know how to stop it and not deal with that horrendous pain.
However, there is another thing I want to mention. We have in our local paper a medical column by a Dr. Gott. He is in different newspapers around the country, he is not a local doctor here. Anyways, so many people have written to him letting him know that they no longer suffer from leg cramps SINCE they started putting a bar of ivory soap (i guess the brand doesn't matter) under the sheet right where your feet are. I have no idea what this does. Neither does the doctor, but there is always someone writing to him telling him they didn't believe this would work, but they tried it anyways, and they NEVER get leg aches/pains/cramps anymore!!!! These letters are from old people, young people, men and women. I just thought I would pass that on to you guys.
Here is one link to him, but there are so many on the web for him, i just chose this one:http://www.unitedfeatures.com/ufsapp/viewFeature.do?id=11

I guess that might explain why I have leg cramps once or twice a week, not enough Potassium. Too bad I really can't eat either bannanas or potatos, due to the fact that I'm a type 2 Diabetic. Oh well. Anyway Menstrual and leg cramps are the worst.
Ireneparalegal 03-02-2006, 12:02 PM Here is one reference abt the bar of soap:

if you check on the web: leg cramps bar of soap, you will get all kinds of info.
Ireneparalegal 03-02-2006, 12:06 PM Soap-under-the-sheet therapy for leg cramps
By Peter H. Gott, M.D.
November 24, 2005
DEAR DR. GOTT: I don't know how the soap-under-the-sheet technique works for leg cramps, but it does. I have been diagnosed with restless legs syndrome and, since using the soap therapy, have had no symptoms. I now can sleep through the night for the first time in many years. Thank you for the tip.
DEAR READER: Since I first published this remedy for nocturnal leg cramps, I have received dozens of letters from readers who endorsed this novel approach.
Recently, I have also received mail from patients with restless legs syndrome, a serious and uncomfortable disorder of unknown cause. These RLS patients have had success with the soap. Although it would be irresponsible of me to endorse this as a cure for RLS, the initial responses have been overwhelming. I'll update you in a future column as I receive more feedback from readers.
To review the technique briefly for people who may have missed previous columns, here is what to do: Take a bar of soap (large or small, new or used, but no Dial or Dove) and place it under the bottom sheet of the bed in the area of the feet and legs. Go to sleep and see what happens. If you sleep, undisturbed by leg cramps or RLS for a full night, let me know. And, of course, write me if the technique is ineffective. I'm looking for honest and objective analyses. Based on preliminary information, I am tempted to put soap treatment into the same, hugely successful category as Vicks VapoRub for toe and/or fingernail fungus.
Brad Russ 03-02-2006, 12:10 PM Thanx Mel.

Oh okay, so those are some of the causes?? Thanks for sharing that Irene!! I eat lots of bananas, so that may be part of the reason why I so seldomly get leg cramps. Now foot cramps are another story, but yeah, leg cramps fortunately aren't a big problem for me. Iv'e seen people get leg cramps that were so bad, that they actually cried. They're definitely not fun at all. Anyway, I'll pass along this info to anyone I know who suffers with this problem.
That ivory soap thing is interesting!! Sometimes the oddest things end up being cures for some of the most severe problems. Thanks for the link. I'll check it out for sure!!
Brad Russ 03-02-2006, 12:12 PM Btw, I'm sorry I didn't put menstrual cramps down as a choice!! I thought of other things I wanted to list after I had already posted, but I don't know how to edit a poll.
Ireneparalegal 03-02-2006, 12:19 PM It's ok. You're a man, WE WOMEN understand....(i think...lol)
Number 9 Dream 03-02-2006, 02:04 PM Ugh, leg pains are the ABSOLUTE worst for me. I get charlie horses maybe every two months or so and it makes me cry. They are so utterly painful.
Brieannas21 03-02-2006, 02:46 PM Labor pains, it's like a really bad menstrual cramp, that's the worst IMO

Polniaczek033 03-02-2006, 06:11 PM Menstrual cramps are terrible. I get them so bad sometimes that I actually can't move my body at all.

Yeah. Mine got worse after my back surgery over five years ago. They are the worst.
Of course, whenever that monthly time comes and I am in pain, I just remember that back surgery and that horrendous, awful pain of that, and then I tell myself, "well, it could be worse, it could be THAT PAIN after surgery!!!" It's psychological, but it works. I would rather go thru labor than go thru that back surgery pain again, EVER!

the thing that sucks is i always manage to be on my period when i have a really important speech tournament. like one last month.. it was a big tournament and i couldn't move around so well because everytime i moved my arm or leg it made my cramps worse. so we didn't do so well. i have a huge national qualifier this saturday and i'm praying to God that it holds off til saturday night or sunday.

Isn't that the worst? having it be painful but then having it when something special or important comes up??? Damn!!!!! I am not even having any more kids, so just having this stupid thing every month is a waste!!!! I bet the guys are really digging how this thread has turned.

Can you believe I've never really had menstrual cramps? Thank God!! My sister used to get them so bad, she's be in tears.
Leg cramps are bad, too, especially when your sleeping, but I hate stomach cramps most of all. I used to get those all the time, mostly from the crap I was putting in my body.
